Not sure where to start, which is about where this incorrect info in the video leads us. Both companies offer remote monitoring via cell phone. I believe Generac was first to include it as standard. Both will run on NG or propane WITHOUT a separate conversion kit. Neither will run on gasoline. Matter of fact, I don't believe there's any UL listed standby sets running on gasoline. (only portables) There are no tri-fuel kits for standby sets. Many of the units shown in this video are 15 - 20 years old and no longer available. Many shown are also commercial grade and cost tens of thousands. Shame on the video producer for not doing their homework in current units!

The Kohler generator does not need a separate conversion kit to have it run on propane. The come from the factory setup for Natural gas and the setup it up for propane is very simple. Install a reducer on the already installed gas regulator and unplug two wire right next to the regulator and that’s it it’s ready for propane. Also in my experience the Kohler generators have been extremely heavy duty and more relabel than the generacs.

FYI: If searching for generator information this video is "okay" up to a point... but I certainly wouldn't let it be my only source of information. Granted, it' a polished high quality, professionally made video but don't let that mislead you. The material as presented falls far short of being an apples to apples representation with the biggest problem being it’s comparing a Kohler liquid cooled unit, powered by a automotive style engine... to a Generac air cooled model powered by a twin cylinder lawn mower style engine. Yes, the video shows images of both a Kohler air cooled unit and a liquid cooled unit but most of the comparison details starting at 02:40 are between Generacs air cooled and Kohlers liguid cooIed. Kohler actually offers a twin cylinder air cooled unit very similar in design, function and price to the Generac model which should have been the Kohler model used in comparison. This video also presents some "misleading" information in the facts presented Example: The narrator touts Kohler as being equipped with a corrosion- resistant aluminum enclosure to Generac which only offers a Rhino Guard Powder Coated finish. FACT: In addition to the Rhino guard powder finish the Generac units, like Kohler, also have an all-aluminum enclosure. At 00:13 he also states Generac has the benefit of being able to use either LP or Gasoline... incorrect! Their dual fuel unit runs on LP or "natural gas" not gasoline. He also states Kolhers require a conversion kit to use other fuels however in truth Kohler also offers dual fuel LP / natural gas units just like Generac. Overall the dialog that accompanies the video tends to imply certain feature(s) of one unit are better than the other. In reality only the consumer can decide which feature is better based on their particular situation. At the end of the video, in summary, the narrator says Kohler is better "Because it allows customization via your smart phone or computer". Really? ... while it can be agreed its a handy benefit it certainly would'nt be a deal breaker for a lot of people. For most people their primary goals when searching for a standby generator are price( best value for the dollar), warranty, longevity, and will be ready when its needed. I only mention price since it was neglected in this video and which avoided the fact that the Kolher liquid cooled unit in the comparison table cost "THOUSANDS" (easily double the price) of the Generac air cooled unit it was compared to. NET: Kolher offers models very similar to Generacs in both design, function, warranty and price which would have made for a more helpful video. And last... the Main KZitem title of this video has a spelling error... Generac is spelled wrong (its not Gencera)

I have used a Kohler 15kw water cooled propane gen for 13 years off grid to supplement my solar array. Elton is correct on all counts. If buying a gen you must consider the run time you will need. Air cooled gens are about 8hrs tops whereas water cooled will run indefinitely and if you are off grid, air cooled is probably not the right choice.
@rupe53

@@dunningkruger3774 ... if you are off grid you should stop comparing brands and look at specs that matter. @@rupe53 I think you meant 1800 RPM :)) And you are precisely correct -- not at all a fair comparison, there's a world of difference between 1800 RPM/liquid-cooled and 3600 RPM/air-cooled generators. Speculation on my part, but I suspect a gen that's rated off-grid is built to higher specs than standby units, and as I understand, are not warranted but for a year. In response to Dunning Kruger, "air cooled gens are about 8hrs tops"...I installed a 22kW propane-fueled gen to a 400A service with two 200A ATS's in February 2021; it ran continuously and flawlessly for nearly three days during the "Interstate I-95 56-Mile Snow Magedon" incident.

To the untrained eye, you see no difference. If all you look at is $ per kilowatt, you are not looking at the right place. Let me engage you some, look on the generac cabinet inside and notice a decal that says words to the effect of "maximum imbalanced current load is 50%". On the Kohler machine the decal is also there, it says maximum unbalanced load rating is 100%. Most don't know what that means. It basically means that a Kohler can handle 100% of its rated load on one set of windings, (there are two sets on a 3600 RPM machine) Where as the generac can only load its windings to half load. It means that the Kohler has more copper in its windings of a larger size, and a stronger voltage regulator and is not as effected by the heat generated by the load on the windings. So, a higher build quality. Check the shipping weights for each similarly sized machine, see which is the heaviest-which one has a better engine, which one has more copper in its load windings? These are not the only difference. Greater oil capacity is another. But, to be sure it is less expensive for a reason. Tell me, where is your generac engine made? Not assembled, but cast, bored and machined. You know, made.

@@nicktheofilos7759 Could it be that the higher ratio of Generac failures is due to a higher ratio of homeowner installs? Over the years that's been my experience, both actual and hearsay. Out of every Generac I've installed most outran the warranty period. As for which is more heavy-duty I think it's a tossup. The engine builds are quite similar in design specs and build. On the other hand, given that I've not installed Kohler that might not be a fair evaluation.

@@wellcraft2136 The homeowner aspect hasn't played a huge part in my experience however it is a consideration I had not given much thought to. There are a lot of things I like about Generac better particularly when it comes to installation. However I have had two Generacs come from the factory non operational, so that kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Finally Kohler has hydraulic lifters eliminating the need to adjust valve lash, so for those reasons I tend to push Kohler for new installs but at the end of the day will install whatever the customer prefers.

Keep in mind that Generac's 24KW rating is at 100% engine rpm. Kohler's 22KW rating is at 80% rpm - which enhances engine longevity.
@josephsednev
Жыл бұрын
What does that even mean? They both run on 3600rpm. Both adjust the speed according to the load and fuel type (LP gives more power). And they both can give more than shown in specs. kohler wants you to check oil every 8hra of running, Generac - 24hrs. Both body cases are aluminum. And for the moment of me putting this comment, generac has 26kw aircooled generator that will allow plus one more ac (ish). Evo 2 controller and interface is much easier than Kohler. I haven’t work on Kohler but saw them, troubleshooting books and so. Like generac for the simplicity of it. Tbh both will work good in perfect scenario, like weather, fuel pressure and maintenance so choose whichever you will get the best service in your area.
@bobbygene8274

You are confused in your description. If you want to look at max horse power at a given RPM, then you might be on to something. But all two pole air cooled engines run at 3600 RPM to create a 60 hertz sine wave. They both are governed to maintain a 3600 RPM at varying loads by varying the fuel supply quantity to maintain 3600 RPM to maintain a 60 cycle wave form.

As a generator tech who has serviced both Kohler and Generac, Generac is hands down the best unit. Your video was very very inaccurate. G force engines are in air cooled units not the liquid cooled. Most of generac liquid cooled engines are Ford Windsor engines. The generac unit does exercise once a week. You kept also saying they run off gasoline. None of those units run off of gasoline. Either Natural Gas or Liquid Propane. Gasoline is completely different. Generac has an all aluminum body while Kohlers are just a cheap plastic and fiberglass. There is a reason why 80 percent of home standby generators are GENERAC not Kohlers. Buy a generac!!!!!

Changing oil and filters i.e. "servicing" generators is not the same as troubleshooting and repairing. I have "serviced" a dozen different brands, and some are definitely better than others. And while generac has improved some, they still have a ways to go in quality. You harp about the poly enclosure of the Kohler as being cheap, how long would you think a steel/aluminum enclosure would last in a salt air environment? That is to say, you can buy a "poly" enclosure for areas that need it, or an aluminum enclosure if that is your preference. Both are available.

As a generac certified dealer and technician can only say that this video is false. With the hundreds of generators we installed and serviced only a few (2 recalls) had some factory issues that been taken care of with no delay. Little things happen here and there if something is done wrong by the installer (wrong fuel or oil pressure) or the customer (irrigation system hitting the unit). But overall we have tons of positive feedback’s especially in SWFlorida, where we have bad grid and hurricanes like Irma, Ien, and fires, when they cut the power for hrs or days putting the fire down. I have seen a lot of bad installations by “i am electrician, I can do anything”, that ended up having issues, but it was all resolved mostly by the warranty. Also generac has aluminum body with powder coating. And now we are installing 26kw, which is 109A ish load compare to 83,5A 20kw. 25A more which is significant

I love my 16kw Natural Gas Generac. I have a 10 year warranty already 6 years into ownership. Even when its 20 below zero it starts right up. Even when power goes off and on 20 tines in 2 days...no issues. Power is clean and I am so confident it keeps my hot tub going as well so it wont freeze. Now Inget mobillink messages whenever it runs or has an issue. I have never lost anything that runs on electricity because the power coming from it is that good. I also have a 7kw on grid solar system and this works flawlessly with it. I am sooo happy with this Generac generator and Generac whole house switch I highly recomend it.

Generacs used to be really good, but ever since they partnered with Home Depot to sell their generators, I've seen the quality drop off. The biggest thing we've seen is a drop in quality control (loose connections, screws missing, panels misaligned, wiring not installed properly, etc.) basically it seems like they're trying to build them as fast as possible with as few people as possible.
