Adam Jacoby Slemmer attended public school in Norristown and worked for a time in his brother’s pharmacy. After graduating from West Point, he served in the Seminole Wars and then in California.
Slemmer was in charge of a small force at Fort Pickens in Pensacola Harbor when Florida seceded from the Union in 1861. Much like the men at Fort Sumter, Slemmer was in a fort off the coast of a rebellious state, with few provisions. The Florida militia demanded that he surrender the fort and threatened attack. Slemmer refused, holding the fort until reinforcements arrived four months later. In 1862, Slemmer was wounded badly in the Battle of Stones River and was unable to return to field duty during the war. Instead, he served in administrative positions in New York and Ohio.
After the war, he was put in command of Fort Laramie, Wyoming, where he died of typhoid fever at the age of 40.
