Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I still play GQ3 quite often. It just seems to hit the right spot for playability with some realism, but not too crunchy for believable outcomes.

@@CounterProductiveGames I'm looking at Warlord's Victory at Sea with Topside minis (just ordered US, UK, Japanese, Italian, German and some Anzac/Nearherlands navy sets along with accompanying air sets in 1/3000), and also checking out GQ II (refresher), GQ III and Command at Sea 4th Ed, currently. I've got a few painted up ships, but Topside minis was the way to go for me. Doing the floor tile mounting meathod, so these are my "floor tile fleets", lol. I like the ship stats you get with GQ III and VaS. I like the points with VaS too. I'm not wild about the CaS, needing to get all separate ship stat books and scenario books, on top of the different editions too.

@@robertmoffitt1336 I agree with everything you're saying. I like the 1/3000 scale ships. The topside minis still have a good amount of detail to see at that scale, and it's a scale that seems to fit better on 6x4 tables. I do like GQ3 ruleset and agree it needs point system like VaS, otherwise my friend just makes and plays historically based games. I'm too lazy for that much research. I would like to play CaS though, but you're right, there are a lot books to buy to support it.

I have these rules for WW2 and WW1 and need to get them back on the table. Naval Thunder is definitely on the “more punishing” side - particularly to small ships. GQ3 and sister game Fleet Action Imminent are solid games. Lots to like in both and they’re my go to systems.

Same here. I keep trying systems, but so far NT and GQ for me are the best.

General Quarters was originally published in the 1970s in a 5.5” x 8.5” booklet. It covered the WW2-Era. A follow-on version covering the WW1-Era was released as General Quarters 2. Both were very simple to play and the ship charts were very similar to those in GQ3. Aircraft attack and defense were covered by simple rules and the torpedo rules did not require a lot of tedious measuring as in most other naval wargame rules of the time. GQ3 really upped the realism in many ways, especially with separate gunnery charts for each nation rather than just making adjustments. GQ 1 and 2 are still very nice entry points if you can find copies of the original booklets or a PDF.

Very nice review. This looks better than SeaKrieg V (which gives me headaches) and nicer than Find Fix and Strike as well. I'm painting ships now to give it a try. 1:24000 scale GHQ

Hard to believe I only came across this vid now - I'm still on the lookout for a "perfect naval rules" and trying not to spend too much money😁Mainly thanks to your overviews I'm now undecided between GQ3 and Naval Thunder. How easy would it be to convert both systems into hexes? I'm not really a fan of minis and measuring, much prefer to deal with exact values. I'm asking about e.g. turning arcs and how often you turn, or torpedo plotting. Finally, any issues with soloing either GQ3 or Naval Thunder. I'm unlikely to find an opponent for either so curious if both are equally good for a solo fix
@CounterProductiveGames

Thanks for watching and asking questions. In my mind, i'd need much smaller ships, say 1/6000 for hexes to look right with maybe 1 or 1 1/2 inch hexes. But could probably happen easier if you use hex maps and counters. Both solo very well actually. It just depends on how much detail you are looking for. GQ3 is a little more on the simulation side of things, Naval Thunder still has a lot of detail, but tends to play quicker. I'd say for solo, go with Naval Thunder first, then later, still get GQ3. I love both systems.

@@CounterProductiveGames Thanks for quick answer, I must admit that with the topics you cover and the quality / thoroughness you are quickly becoming my favourite content creator😁 I have a suitable hex map I can use for anything naval / space (blank map, purchased ages ago), but as hex grid is pretty small the maximum I can get in there would be 5/8" counters, so I will need to use something custom-made. It's ok though, I'm not a "visual" guy and will always place gameplay over graphics... Another question on the subject - is there any difference if I'm planning to do bigger battles? I actually started leaning towards GQ3, as looks like the damage tracking is easier with it (no "bean counting" and damage moving "further down", but either you cause serious damage or not) plus ship cards look smaller. On the other hand, people praise NT for quicker play - same as you😁 The downside to GQ3 is I can't find much information on it... Do you know if the publisher's version is a "full package" (with all the charts / ships for different nations) or are there any expansions I can't find😳 I'll need to stick to pdf printout, as shipping to the UK would probably easily double the price for me...

@@przemekbozek I really think NT is the better for larger battles. One thing that can bog things down is pre-plotting movement for large number of ships in GQ3. NT is more flexible in the moving department. Also, NT can be played with one chart of data, and GQ3 is not chart heavy, but there is more detail that could slow things down. I"ve played Battle of the River Plate with both systems, for example, and get similar results with both systems, but much faster play with NT. Honestly, at some point I think it's worth owning both. Both offer PDF versions that have support for multiple nations. GQ3 offers the full PDF with ships for the major nations and access to their file section with additional material to support the game, a great value for the price. NT offers 'Merica and Japan in the base game and the other major nations in the Bitter Rivals. So that's two purchases, about the same price overall. If you want some more detail and crunch, GQ3. If you want something a little quicker that can handle larger battles, try NT. Again, I recommend in time purchasing both! You won't be unhappy with whatever you choose first!

@@CounterProductiveGames As usual, thanks for the detailed answer! I've had a look at both of them and will go with your recommendation - NT first and GQ3 second. And I do think I'll end up buying both😂 BTW, a quick recommendation from me - have you tried Advanced Salvo European Theatre? It's a quick one, with abstracted movement, so far only covering Atlantic/Med side of things in World War Two, but worth it as an intro game. I also need to check out No Safe Port - got it a while back, has more abstract damage rules but have both tactical and operational component and is very modular... BTW, what's a best way to contact you outside your videos,to exchange ideas (if you're interested)?

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. GQ3 doesn't need a ref at all. It really just depends on how you want to play. The ref would be good for tracking fog of war types of situations, but really optional. I bought the basic rules for CaS, but haven't had the spare cash to pick up fleet books to try it out. Someday I'd love too though.

I've been having trouble with CV operations in the tactical level. It says AA shoots at planes friend or foe in their range, which makes sense with identifying and such but what about planes returning to or taking off from a carrier? I can't imagine the escort ships shooting all the carriers planes as soon as they take off or come to land but I haven't' noticed anything that contradicts that. I am sure there is something but I'm probably just missing it.
@CounterProductiveGames

I don't have a specific rule, but we play it where AA does not fire at taking off or returning aircraft. Friendly fire only happens when friendly aircraft are engaged with enemy aircraft. So we try to limit engagements outside of AA range. I hope that makes sense. It might not be correct, but it made sense to us.

Did they give you a PDF along with your Loose Leaf purchase? Or did you have to buy them separately? Spending $40 on the rulebook pages is alright but if it's not printed in color as needed, and they want an extra $40 for the PDF on top of that, then I'm concerned.

@@CounterProductiveGames Here's an idea for an unusual scenario: Operation Ten-Go was the suicidal charge of the Yamato and an anti-submarine escort to assist in the defense of Okinawa. In the event, Admiral Mitscher’s aircraft stole the scene and sank the pride of the Japanese fleet; but Admiral Spruance had ordered Admiral Deyo to take some of the older battleships and their escorts to prevent Yamato from achieving her goals. I think it was partly because Mitscher hated the Big Gun Club, and partly out of shame for how poorly the Hornet’s Air Group did at Midway. It could have been quite a slugging match with the IJN supplying Yamato, 1 light cruiser, and 9 destroyers vs the US Navy’s Idaho, Tennessee, Maryland, West Virginia, Colorado, New Mexico, 7 cruisers, and 20 destroyers. The Yamato’s greater range, larger shels, and the more deadly Japanese torpedoes could have made it much more evenly balance than mere numbers might indicate. If I had the time, I could probably figure out the best way to simulate that. I have only just learned of Task Force 54 and the Battleship Duel That Never Was. So if any of you know people who still do ad hoc wargaming, and might be willing to simulate that alternate history event, I would be grateful for news…
