For those who do not know at the begining winter hated war he despized it saying"the war will only bring out the worst in us"and he did not lie his brother deserted after seeing the true color of war But i think that winter found a part of himself in the war he himself did not know of. He went from hating war to using civilians as rats,bwfore he hated kiling but you will find out that the war changed him so much he killed men,women,children equal at the end when they were in the forest after the end of the war i belive that when he was watching the sky he remembered the things he done and that he could never forgive himself . He walked into that machine nest knowing full well he was gonna die but he knew that by dying he will save those boys from the same fate but that he will also release himself from the prison he calls life.

This scene does a great job at rationalizing atrocities. You might read in a history book that, “after the locals helped the NAZIS, they then forced the locals to clear a minefield for them at gun point. While In a war memoir, a German Officer may express how it was either the locals or his men, and he ofc choose his men. It’s all about context. I don’t think it’s right to judge characters of the past without full context.

Plus at this point these men had experienced so much that they became incredibly nihilistic. People now care so much about PTSD in modern conflicts, and rightly so, but imagine the shit going on mentally in the heads of soldiers in WW2 and especially the eastern front, where it was considered cowardice to show any symptoms of PTSD. It’s easy to see why completely rational normal and borderline harmless kids turn into emotionless killing machines. The German memoir “A stranger to myself” highlights this perfect, a complete geek by our standards turns wild because of the war and sees no problems stealing the last food from civilians or kicking them out their houses for somewhere to stay. He died before the war ended but it’s from his diaries and letters he sent home. Communism and national socialism are ideas. Some not very smart commentators above offer to kill all Russians to kill the idea of communism. But the author of this idea was not Russian. Before the advent of nuclear weapons by the Soviets, this possibility was theoretically possible. But there was also an experienced red army that had fought for the past 4 years on the eastern front. Unfortunately, capitalism also has its drawbacks.

Mines don't work that way. In movies we are told that the mine explodes when you release your foot, but in real life the detonation happens when you apply pressure on a plate/trigger. Nice scene, but in real life the explosion would have happened immediately when he walked on it and it would only have cut his foot and/or part of its leg. The objective of mine is to deny terrain and it aims to wound, not kill, because the wounded need medical attention and thus you force the enemy to have more guys in the rear to take car of them, so less guys in the front to fight.
@TexasHoosier3118

That is so short term thinking. A few months later and he is back out there killing. Better to kill him.
@AndyP998
Жыл бұрын
Soviet infantry mines would propably have that kind of explosion. Generally they had much more explosives in it and it wouldnt just injure foot but more likely blow him away. They got about 2-3 times more than western made. Beside not sure about type, but got propably dead mans switch. So will go off when pressure gets lifted. So you are quite wrong

You're thinking in modern terms. Back then the whole "don't kill just wound" was barely a thing, as proof the infamous "bouncing betty", or Mine S, aims to kill not wound.

You want to know the worst part? He could have lived. That mine had a dead man's switch. That means that it only detonate when pressure is removed. Its not uncommon for experienced men to remove the mine from underneath the guys foot. You pull it out, hold down the trigger mechanism, get a heavy rock or other object, and switch your hand out without releasing the trigger, and walk away.

Emanresuadeen im sorry but the germans did not randomly let civilians walk over the mines, they thought that it was a trap or that the farmers were partisans. Us soldiers would have most likely done the same. Dont think that us soldiers were great and all, do you think the us soldiers were nice to the citizens of germany when the war was within germany itself? Hell no they werent, my dad's grandma lived in germany in ww2 and she told us everything also usa had there own concentration camps in the usa for innocent japanese us civilians. I dont mean to hate usa becaus i fucking love the usa but dont think they were all only good and never did anything wrong. German soldiers were just like us soldiers, they fought for waht they thought was right.

I guess highly unlikely, considering the patrol had no engineer with them, that an engineer had to be called from who knows where, that they were on foot , that the terrain they are on is ankle deep mud (just dig something from mud and it will be 4x times harder), in a forest with partisans, that the soldier by the time an engineer could be available would probably be very tired of keeping the same position for so long, etc.
