Over a thousand years before Pentecost, God began his plan to gather back fallen humanity scattered among many nations with diverse languages by choosing one man, Abraham (c. 2000 BC). For this reason, implies the Catechism, Abram is given the name Abraham which means “the father of a multitude of nations (Genesis 17:5 RSVCE).” A reason that God chose Abram was because Abram “believed the Lord; and he reckoned it to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6 RSVCE).” The word believe is a translation of the Hebrew root word aman, (אֱמִ֖ן) meaning trusting, believing, confirming. The English word Amen comes directly from this Hebrew word. In its biblical context, explains Miller, “It has to do not with believing a piece of information but with considering someone reliable. Abraham accepted God as reliable.”
