It consists of Genkyuen and Rakuen, but they were originally one garden, and were also called Genkyuen or Kitaen.
It is located between the northern inner moat of Hikone Castle and the old inner lake. It is said to have been constructed during the Enpo era.
Genkyuen has a large pond, four middle islands such as Motojima and Niijima, and an artificial mountain built from the east to the north, with a path around the park. The main scenery of the garden is Motoshima, which is made of huge stones, and Hakkeitei, which was built facing the pond.
Hakkeitei offers a panoramic view of the garden, and the castle tower of Hikone Castle and its trees form a beautiful backdrop to the garden.
During the Bunka period, Tsukigoten was expanded and part of Genkyuen was repaired to become Rakuen. The current state of the garden is a Karesansui style, with dry waterfalls and dry streams, and there is something to be seen in the stonework.
Genkyu Rakuen is a daimyo garden that developed during the Edo period, and is an excellent garden that harmonizes well with the landscape of Hikone Castle.
