February 21st, 2015. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin takes on the very courageous Martin Murray as GGG looks to defend his IBO, WBA and WBC Interim Middleweight titles. Going into the fight, Golovkin and Murray had records of 31(28)-0 and 29(13)-1-1 respectively.
In August 2010, Golovkin won his 1st world title by bagging the WBA Interim strap with a 1st round knockout victory over Milton Núñez. After 2 successful defenses, he added the vacant IBO crown to his collection. GGG would go on to successfully defend his WBA and IBO titles 8 times from May 2012 to October 2014. In his 8th title defense, he also won the WBC Interim Middleweight title.
By 2015, Golovkin had a combined total of 12 successful title defenses with notable victories over Nilson Julio Tapia, Kassim Ouma, Lajuan Simon. Makoto Fuchigami, Grzegorz Proksa, Gabriel Rosado, Nobuhiro Ishida, Matthew Macklin, Curtis Stevens, Osumanu Adama, Daniel Geale and Marco Antonio Rubio.
Martin Murray is considered to be Golovkin’s toughest fight as he was able to box defensively against GGG in the early rounds before being knocked down twice.
However, GGG was not able to completely capitalize for a finish as Murray with tremendous determination was able to outbox Golovkin despite taking a great deal of punishment. Murray finally crumbled in the late rounds as the referee calls a halt to the bout in the 11th.
With this victory, GGG scored his 13th consecutive successful title defense; placing him 3rd behind legends Bernard Hopkins and Carlos Monzon in terms of numbers of successful consecutive middleweight title defenses.
After beating Murray, Golovkin have since defended his Middleweight crowns against Willie Monroe Jr, David Lemiuex, Dominic Wade and Kell Brook which means GGG has a total of 17th consecutive successful defenses of his middleweight titles.
He will be taking on Daniel Jacobs on 18th March 2017 where GGG makes the 18th defense of his titles. Can the “Miracle Man” pull off a miracle by upsetting Golovkin? GGG has never been stopped or even knocked down in about 400 bouts (amateur and pro) and is still undefeated today.
Will Danny Jacobs make the difference?
