Fun Fact: Though the Hojo clan was mentioned in the video- Please understand that this Hojo clan was known as the EARLY Hojo clan. The Hojo clan in the Sengoku period is known as the LATE Hojo clan and is completely different from the EARLY Hojo in terms of founding the clan and how it is not affiliated/related with even the EARLY Hojo clan. The LATE Hojo clan was founded by two brothers who eventually took up the Hojo surname and unofficially declared inheritance to the former clan's legitimacy/legacy as the new successors to the Hojo family. Think of the LATE Hojo clans upbringing as if it were the founding of Rome story only the difference is that no brother died but instead made a powerful clan that made a powerful state in the Kanto region that would last until the rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the Siege of Odawara (1588-90) that would put an end for the Warring States Period- Temporarily.

Which is ironic, considering how at first, the early Hojo usurped power from the Seiwa Minamoto. In the end, the Tokugawa Minamoto ended up not just usurping the Kanto region from the late Hojo, but also established the new capital of Edo on that land.

Hojo: Yoritomo, wanna marry my daughter and use my resources to kick some Taiga butts? Yoritomo: Hell yeah! Hojo: By the way, have you ever heard of the legend of Fujiwara Regency? Yoritomo: Hmm, not really? Hojo: Good.😈
@morricane5087
4 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Hôjô Tokimasa was decidedly not amused when he came back from guard duty in Kyoto and realized that his daughter was pregnant with Yoritomo's child - not surprising: acknowleding their marriage could implicate his family with rebellious intent against the ruling Taira elites. (and also: it wasn't Yoritomo's descendants that would eventually be rendered powerless under the Hôjô)
@joshuasepeda3289

To be fair, the Fujiwara regency is a very obscure period in Japanese history, barely lasting a generation. I'm not surprised that Linfamy hasn't mentioned it at all, nobody really knows anything about it.
@demeterruinedmylife3199
4 жыл бұрын
Joshua Sepeda Oh, are you perhaps referring the four sons of Fujiwara Fuhito? I don’t mean that (in fact I don’t know Fujiwara Regency is actually a period name... 😅) I just finds that Hojo becomes another clan that controlled the government head through marriage funny... Though it seems that I’m quite incorrect on this subject. I just know a little bit about that Shikken thing from a Mongol invasion video, so when I see this Hojo guy married his daughter to Yoritomo, I thought so that’s why Hojos are the regent. As it turns out, as Morricane pointed out, it wasn’t Yoritomo’s descendants that became powerless. By making a joke, I actually make a fool out of myself!😂

There were definitely more than three cities in Japan in that period, what the Minamoto did was to turn Kamakura into an important political center that could rival Kyoto but aside from that there were definitely many major centers of population in Japan well before the Genpei War.
@morricane5087

Yup, definitely. The location of the dazaifu in Kyushu must have been quite a large settlement as well, for example. I would also expect important centers like Ise Grand Shrine to have been surrounded by quite a substantial amount of infrastructure. Also provincial headquarters were all pretty much fortified towns.

The one thing I haven't quite figured out yet is why on earth Kiyomori banished Yoritomo to Izu. The Kantô region was brimming with very large warrior bands (such as the Miura) that used to be in service to his ancestors - and most of these pretty much instantly joined his cause. I mean, why was the kid not sent off to some tiny island out in the boonies instead...
