7:03 the benefit of quads isn't that they deform better its that you can subdivide them as you're working and work with them easier as an artist. Everything is triangulated when it gets to the game engine. Triangles can't be part of two planes at the same time like quads like If you were to make a plane in blender for example and grab two opposing vertices and move them up you'll essentially see two tris with a missing edge.

I think that having correct lighting on the hair reduces the anime effect. Part of the aesthetic of 2D animation is that things aren't perfect and correct all the time. 2D animators make mistakes and those mistakes are part of the charm. The whole point of not having shadows under the skirt and having the lighting on the hair be static is to keep those "mistakes" in on purpose. It's to strengthen the illusion of the game being anime / 2D animation. I've been doing a lot of 3D animation with emission shaders recently, and it's been providing a very stylized and far less 3DCG type of aesthetic.

The fresnel is incorrect, fresnel is angel of refraction at what angle light is reflected at the camera (usualy low angle). Example Fresnel is experienced when looking at a waters surface and the lower you stand the more reflective it becomes where if you get closer and look from above its less reflective and you can see within. What your refering to is a silhouette highlight where 4-8pixels are shaded a color to create separation based on camera. The hair highlights/reflecion if dynamic would be caused by fresnel.

I know the Guilty Gear devs also avoid having "real" lighting (including shadows etc) on their character models, there's some quirks with cel-shaded (boolean lit/shaded) lightning + anime-style shapes that produces very unnatural effects (random islands of bright in things that should be in shadow, noses casting insanely long shadows, etc) unless you have full control over the lighting, and it breaks the immersion more than just skipping shadows entirely does.

While you evidently know your way around Blender, there are some points of misinformation about these concepts. One example is using the Fresnel effect and the concept of rim lighting interchangeably. I know how you mean the "highlights encroaching from the edges of an object", but the first is actually a result of material properties and the second is simply a matter of of a light placed strategically to highlight the edge of an object. Another is equating midtones with the result of sub-surface scattering. I do not believe you to be ignorant of the difference or even confused, but simply using shorthand to discuss the particular concerns of rendering 3d object in an Anime style. I do believe, however that these equivalencies you make could confuse any beginner seeking to learn about 3D art concepts.

Looking at your own spin to the cel-shaded look and how the shadow can actually be seen obscured by the skirt as well as moving hair highlights, is it safe for me to also assume that model with cel-shaded visual type like the one you demonstrated in your way can also be affected by real-time lighting? (in that the different colour of the lighting may appropriately bounce off them or such) mihoyo's toon-shade having the "no actual shadow" thing kind of boggled me a bit (and I couldn't ever find many works that can fully confirm it for me that toon shade with aspects of realistic visuals like actual lighting and shadow effects are possible for UE4)
@xxerbexx

hmm real cel shading shadows are possible in ue4. usually ppl do it in post process wich i think is horrible, so i made my own way to do that in materials. now, that the light color effects the color of the mesh is currently not a thing. i have another type of cel shading where i made it work. im currently trying to combine "real light shadows" with light color. its defenetly nothing that works by default in any way but i think i might be able to get it done, to have real shadows and light color on the mesh.
