Every mobile game, not just gachas, has a hotline for customer support. I had a friend Adam (name changed) and he worked for this big one, uhhh lets call it, Mandys Mush. You want to take a guess what 99% of Adam's day was? Taking calls from livid adults to find out that their child had gotten into the shop and used the already linked credit card to purchase hundreds of dollars of power ups and replays. (and in rare instances calls from young adults about how mom or dad had spent ACTUAL BILLS MONEY on the game.) And Mandys Mush was one of the first to deliver this model, so it wasnt even employing predatory tactics we know today. It literally would just be like "hey you're outta lives, you can buy more if you want or just take a break!" and STILL folks would spend enough to make it the highest grossing mobile game for years, practically putting mobile games into the marketplace in the first place. So now tell me, when you have your customer support spending 99% of their shift telling adults (usually) that "We are not responsible for any financial transactions in game. All sales are final and refunds are not allowed unless you can prove the card stolen and used on an account not your own." and then fans of your genre saying its so frustrating to play it without spending money at all and wishing they could "just spend a few bucks" to feel like its WORTH playing, how on earth can people just shrug and be like "well if you spent money thats your own fault and you are scum" That line of thinking feels like literal non-hyperbolic brainwashing, that's that same logic as how billion dollar companies hire third world outsourcing/immigrant labor at half the cost of minimum wages and folks will go "THOSE DAMN IMMIGRANTS TOOK JOBS FROM US!!!" like no you dumbass the company saw an easy way to make more money with less effort and loves that you wont even blame them for it.

Every time i mention anywhere in the mobile game sphere how predatory these companies are i get shut down by ppl saying "but that's just gatcha games, everyone does this". No . Just because something became the standard doesn't mean it's right and should be allowed to continue. If something is unfair, predatory and harmful to kids and their spending habits it should be stopped or heavily regulated. The example u brought up is brilliant to be honest. Fast fashion is one industry where companies got away with so much exploitation and everyone was doing it, even luxury brands. Until it got exposed and people are slowly waking up to this. I think the first step in the right direction would be for ppl to stop defending and start questioning and thinking my money is worth more than a quarter of a wish. @@orsikocs your comment made me realize another point: it's NOT "just gachas" like think about the other examples in yakkos video: cs go had skin trading and betting. Why? Cause it's a gacha system that's how you get what you want. Roblox I'm unsure how that works so I'll skip, but the BIGGEST offender is Overwatch. Loot boxes are given free pass cause "oh you can just grind for them!!!" But THEN there's events. If you don't grind hard enough and if the gods don't love you during this 2-3 week period you're SCREWED and don't get that special skin until next year! (Where there will also be NEW skins to chase!) So right there, a non-gacha with the most gacha shit ever. So by gacha player logic, it's okay as long as there is even a small choice to not pay, which is stupid as shit. Hmmmm....I'm not as big a KZitemr as yakko but I'm thinking I need to write a script. You see it’s both those things together that make it bad. I’m a libertarian and even I have a problem with psychologically manipulative tactics in games. You no longer are given the agency of free will or choice when the developers psychologically manipulate you into spending money. If the stipulation to play is “have self control.” Then it needs to be regulated the same way as gambling and rated as such. It’s why I don’t defend Gacha but will also not have a problem at all with Pay to Win; because unlike gambling you can make a rational cultural argument in favor of P2W. Some gaming cultures value their time far more than their money, take Korea for example; whereas in America we value our money when it comes to games far more than our time. We will grind for 20 hours just to avoid spending 5$.

The biggest sin of this game is not the predatory gambling shit and not even the awful grind, it's that after you empty your parent's credit cards to get C6 of every character and R5 of every weapon, and after you spend months getting the perfect artifacts... you can't even use it for anything. There is no challenging and rewarding content that you can do regularly besides the abyss, which you can only do twice a month. The other 28 days you legit have 0 things to do. No goals and no obstacles, simply nothing but waiting for the next story update, and if you don't care about the story, well.. One would think that money-hungry company that relies on whales to survive would try to accommodate them, but they're either unwilling or incompetent to do it. So if you watch any stream or go to any KZitem channel of a big spender, they will play the game for like 30 minutes and then spend 5 hours talking about the drama, watching news, "rating" viewers accounts, doing giveaways. In other words, anything but playing the game. I have no idea what mihoyo's long term plan is. Maybe there isn't one, and they will just move to another game once this cow runs out of milk and dies peacefully

I am confused if everyone knows that there is no difficult content for whales for almost 2 years now, I don't understand why do they keep spending so much money to get c6 and r5 when there is 0 benefit to do so other than seeing bigger numbers personally and clearing abyss with max stars easily. Its like spending a lot of money upgrading to a very fast sports car just to drive in the same busy city where you can't use its potential.

You didn’t spend money, but you spent hours of your time, and yeah, you can kill a boss in 12 seconds, but did you have fun anywhere in the process? I don’t build my characters, I don’t make a perfect team comp, I just use who and what I want because I want to. And there are people who take offense to that! My best friends tell me I play the game wrong because my shiny flower that I put on my unlucky Fire boy was 2% too low to be viable. I play the game by the principle of, if you hit something enough it will die, and I have fun. Isn’t fun why anyone plays games in the first place?

And I think it's great someone came in with a different point of view on it then I do. Personally, I'm all over the game, there's very few aspects of it I'm not happy with during my playtime. I just wish more hardcore people would just calm down and understand that a critique of YOUR favorite piece of media doesn't mean you have to go out on a limb and defend it. Like I said, I love Genshin, but there are plenty of parts of it (the gacha, using real-life money, etc) where I think it deserves to be looked at critically.

@MadreJoshua

I wouldn't fully agree with that take; I think, depending on the situation, it is fine for the gameplay to take a hit / be negatively influenced, if it serves the story. Videogames are an interactive medium and the gameplay in and of itself can be a big part of the storytelling. There are many games that do negatively affect the gameplay in some way to make some kind of point / for story purposes, which explicitly serves some kind of narrative purpose. In my opinion, the issue with Genshin here, is that it's less "we are restricting gameplay in some way here due to story related reasons" as much as "we're writing the story around restricting the gameplay in some way"; They don't want you to just run off and explore the entire world, and that's why parts of the lore are written around not letting you into certain areas from the beginning; Getting eletrocuted in the middle of the ocean doesn't have some Big Lore Reason that couldn't have possibly been written differently due to someone's artistic vision for the world, but rather because they just didn't want you to do that and needed an excuse for it. TL;DR sometimes it's fine to prioritize story over gameplay but the way genshin impact does it is very flawed and doesn't serve the story all that much.
@Sekaro297
2 жыл бұрын
@@ohamatchhams The main issue with that was that is was just short af. SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU REALLY CARE FOR SOME REASON. We were introduced to her as this very bad person and she didn't really even do much to excuse her behaviour. She more or less said "aight you beat me, I see your point. I'm going to stop and think for a second now." A bit late after the many many deaths and zero consequences. We also didn't even get to really hate her since we didn't spend much time with the resistance. Teppei was the only character that was somewhat important and he wasn't even around that much. Kokomi got quite the intro and then proceeded to not really matter that much later. The story really is much less "story" when counting purely the main quests and just more of an introduction to the world and it's characters. And that's not counting how we won against a God so easily that it felt really disappointing. Like sure, the story could be worse. But oh hell it's easy to see how it could better and it isn't exactly much of an issue to think of. But sadly that would require more effort on their part and longer production times for the next update which leaves the players with the horrible daily grind which is likely to make them quit.

Genshin optimizing lurker here who would like to make a statement on the combat system. From the outside it is a simple rock paper scissor system but it has way more depth than many other rpgs. For example, all elements have an internal cooldown for application. See that big electric shield? Not all of your ice infused attacks will crack it. It will be on an internal 2.5 sec timer or a 3 hit timer. This timer differs for normal/charged/skill/burst damage. Another example is the "heaviness" of each element or the Guage. Burst usually applies more of an element than normal attacks. Each character has thier own Guage that determines how you want to rotate skills. How does this affect my gameplay? Lets say I play normally and spam a fire support with a water dps. But then the fire support applies weak fire while the water support applies strong water. All of a sudden, I'm amplifying the support fire damage instead of the water dps damage because the water is so strong that it stays applied even after I try to apply fire. Now I have to stay longer on my fire character or swap them out to a different character/build. This is only the surface of the iceberg of the complex background mechanics at play. Feel free to visit keqingmains website as that is where all the knowledge is complied. You can easily see that this combat can be as deep as you want it to be.

Still sad that I hardly earn any 5 Star weapons (I just want a Wolf's Gravestone, man). Genshin would probably be my favorite game if it wasn't a Gacha at all.

fellow f2p ar59 player here, I'm also never suggest people play this game at all, not spend money being f2p? Hah have fun wasting your first 1st to 300 hours to at least get 20 character to reach lv70 Ascend 5 right there. Wanna spend some bucks in this game? Welp you will suffer the same issue f2p will suffer but also you will waste your time and money for what? Bad experience aswell. Many veteran HI3 predict that this game will suffer the same fate when Star Rail and the 4th Honkai game out in future. Don't touch this game and the community it is downright hazardous way beyond toxic. The way this company and the developer treat their own player from their previous game to now is not really suprising...warm negative but since the anni incident and HI3 global 3rd anni incident it evolve into very negative, this is why when currently they announce this game delay are definetly happening due to certain lockdown which is not our main topic, the player reception are just aphatetic and don't bother it anymore. When west taiwan censorship hammer bonk this game, people rather laugh at the game and the devs because they pretty much suffer hard karma since they did censor their own player and now their own goverment censor their own game aka tasting their own poison. The last paragraph topic I made is the reason why having good relationship between player and the company and the devs are very vital even on gacha games or else you see what Mihoyo and Nexon suffer.

6:22 The difference is that other gacha games are mobile games that you leave on auto play while doing something else. Genshin is the most time intensive gacha. To get my weekly saints quartz in FGO all I have to do is play a total of around 1 hour and log in every day for about 10 seconds. Genshin wants at least half an hour a day and a lot more to properly optimize.

It is also, entirely pointless optimisation. Some people like that of course (big numbr go up) but i dont like spending metric moons to clear content that i already could. Doesnt help that clearing the content is never fun and is purely a matter of “how fast can i kill this enemy”

Skullgirls Mobile recently updated their daily freebie system to be able to do like…5-6 tasks in a list to get all of your free daily rewards (including premium currency). Those tasks include stuff like…log in, open your daily relic, send a friend a gift, play a match in each of the game modes, etc. There’s also an auto-play feature that can pretty easily clear the daily events, and early streaks in the prize fights. I don’t ever feel like my time is wasted playing the game, and the events are monthly, so no FOMO if I can’t play. Skullgirls Mobile has its problems for sure, it’s far from perfect, but I look at games like Genshin and I go “Besides the anime aesthetic, what the fuck is worth my time in that game?”

The worst thing about Gacha practices is how slippery they make the slope (not just referring to players) Games rely on marketing to sell widely, marketing needs money, and any fan/observer of gachas will tell you they RAKE in the money off of whales. Ads, sponsorships, company tie-ups: all if these become ridiculously easier. Basically, it drags its competition in the industry down to its level

To be honest, I used to love this game in the beginning (I started around when it launched) it was something new and also something I could play with my friends since they had it. I just had a blast wandering around Mondstat and ignoring the main quest to do whatever I wanted/could at the time (which also happened with Liyue oof), really just messing around with the characters I pulled with my free gems (I stayed F2P for literally ~months~ until a character I really wanted dropped). I settled into the routine of getting home, doing dailies, getting artifacts and materials, and whatever my friends wanted to do if CoOp was on the table. It was to the point where I played every day because, well, it was part of my routine now. ...then my account got hacked. I lost all of my five star artifacts, regional materials, my better (almost fully ascended) weapons, and all of my level up books. ...needless to say that was my wakeup call by the fact of how I realized how much work it was gonna take to get all of it back...and I haven't played since. (Doesn't mean I can't enjoy the characters and their stories though)

There is nothing to do once you explore the world, finish the quests and upgrade your characters a bit. You very quickly get to a point where even the shitty grind is pointless because the game no longer gives you better artifacts than what you already have meaning that you can sometimes spend months farming for no improvement.

"Breath of the Wild's combat us bad because its linear and weapon break when I use it >:(" Okay this was an unreasonably funny line of argument, seeing a gacha player complaining about combat that's about _resource management._ Putting aside techniques like Flurry Rush and Parrying (which take some skill to execute that I haven't developed), BotW's complexity comes from having to scramble for resources, using what you have to get to key battles then preparing yourself for key battles by gathering enough weapons to last. Sure, it means you can't get attached to weapons (which can be fun), and it doesn't mean Genshin's isn’t complex (after hundreds to thousands of hours), but getting mad at a game because it isn’t designed around status stacking reads like "I don't wanna think about combat in any way the Holy Impact has not mandated."

I find it funny that they say Botw has a linear fighting system and that genshin has a "dynamic elemental system." But Genshin literally is: attack, switch character, attack, switch character, attack, etc. And BotW has several different ways to kill enemies. Want to kill them with just bombs? Want to sneakstrike all of them? And people have even gotten more creative than what the game mostly advertises because *it lets you.* That argument is really stupid. (You're allowed to dislike or like one or the other, even both, but you can't say that one is objectively worse than the other.)

The problem with the combat is that the gacha is a staple part of it. Characters have very little depth on their own and are meant to be used as teams, so when you've used all the teams available to you, the only way to keep the combat entertaining is to try and get more characters.
@JohnGigaGrenade

Yeah, speaking of, Razor and Ayaka are both based on DMC5 characters, Nero and Vergil respectively. Thing is, if both of them had as much depth as the DMC lads, there would simply be no need for more characters. Instead the have No timed combos, no aerials nor special ults, etc. The characters are very surface level, so that team play is the correct way to play, and playing as one character is simply boring.

It's funny I've been playing Genshin consistently since it first came out over a year ago. And I agreed with every aspect of your video. Objectively Genshin isn't very good, but that doesn't matter because I still find it fun. It's the game I look forward to coming home to to play for like 30 minutes and then move on to something else. It's the one aspect of my life where I don't feel like a failure because it's both fun, and easy. The only thing that actually pulled me away from playing this game religiously was Eldenring because that game is fun and also objectively very very good.

As someone who has played since day 2, maxed my adventure rank, played daily for over a year, spent around $2,000 on the game (not my brightest moment I'll admit) and has hundreds of hours in the post-game, everything you have said in this video is accurate. I remember waiting months for new story and world content to drop and I was so excited. The story was intriguing and fun when you started and roped me in for more. But then you hit the endgame. It's a fucking slog. You don't want to wait for more short bursts of content because the quality is non existent. The gacha is bad. Gacha games are inherently bad. GAMBLING IS NOT GOOD. my only positives were the characters and thrill of hitting those high damage counts and team combos. Love Albedo. Love Kazuha. I couldn't give a fuck about anything else. Also, blatant racism/colorism is rampant in the new story Sumeru. I don't think I need to explain why that's bad or why people shouldn't support it. Genshin Impact is a bad game.
