Three fun facts about Venti: 1) His English VA is a woman. 2) His English VA stated that when Hoyoverse gave her direction to act as Venti, they described him as androgynous to her. 3) His face model is the only male teenager model (Aether, Bennett...) in the game that actually uses the female teenager (Lumine, Amber...) face model instead.

@@Phos67if you refuse to think that then go for it hun, but equally other people are entitled to their own thoughts that are also different to yours. Plus nothing about Venti 'makes' him not queer either. It goes both ways. So just let everyone have their own thoughts especially when these are just ideas when the game is subject to strict regulations that hints like the original commenter mentioned, can mean a lot more because that may be all hoyoverse can use to imply a character's queer identity.

Neuvillette also has some more very “trans rights” lines, he talks about identity being something that is often upheld by clothing and appearances and being something you have to learn to accept and coexist with, and in his teapot lines he says that he wishes people were free to exist in the form that is rightfully theirs and to not be afraid to crack your eggshell lmao

there's also a point to make about Furina and how her attack animations end on the stereotypically male bow while Navia's end on the female one. Furina also has the flattest chest out of the female characters and her overall outfit is a rather gender neutral looking suit

She also uses "僕" in Japanese which is a pronoun "I" for boys! Bokukko: In the Japanese dub, Furina uses the boyish "boku," befitting her androgynous fashion sense. (c) tv tropes sandbox Edit: some ppl are saying this is a misconception and that women can also use "boku" and that it's a normal thing. I'm not saying they can't, but I did read a little bit about this and japanese people seem to agree that in a lot of places that would be seen as weird or quirky. So there's that. Also, yes, the game is Chinese so you can say it's irrelevant information, but then again every dub or translation has it's audience and this was a deliberate choice. If you take a look - different Genshin characters use different pronouns in the Japanese translation. For example Yae or Faruzan use outdated versions if I remember this right. Also it's an official translation. But it's your choice how you'll treat this little fact. Lastly I'm not an expert or anything like that so I encourage you to do your own research and come to your own conclusions if you think that's necessary, thank you

Love to see Zhongli included in this because I am always going on about how shapeshifters are so gender. Interestingly, the idea of him shapeshifting into a woman was also brought up in the Liyue Archon quest by Paimon and Zhongli himself. When presenting perfumes to the Rex Lapis statue, one that was favoured by older women was chosen. Paimon asks if that means Rex Lapis was an older woman, to which Zhongli replies "Perhaps. Rex Lapis has taken on countless forms. Perhaps that really was one of them." For even more casual breaking of gender norms (idk if you have talked about this before), Furina's style of clothing is called Ouji fashion which is commonly seen as boyish and in the Japanese dub, Furina refers to herself with 'boku' a term usually only used by younger boys or men. TL;DR Archons say fuck gender conformity and I'm here for it.

I've been going trought the books of the game a little bit recently and Rex Incognito got my interest. It basically narrates times where the Geo Archon took human shapes to mingle a bit with society. Everytime, the one thing that is the most recognisable is the amber eyes (if my memory is correct). And in, I think it was Vol. 2, the story was about this exentric sculptor who was commissioned by a mysterious lady -with amber eyes- to make a statue of Rex Lapis but to not use the existing depictions of him as inspirations. Long story short, in the end, the sculptor represented Rex Lapis as an older woman So Geo Archon taking on the form of a woman is cannon in two ways (feel free to correct me if I made any mistakes)

I always love the discussion of Zhongli's gender identity. Aside from what's already been mentioned in the comments or the video such as the line from the Stone Harbor web event or Rex Incognito, there's also the interesting excerpt from volume 3 of Customs of Liyue: "Interestingly, the people of Liyue see the pretty and sweet-smelling Silk Flower as one of the many symbols of Rex Lapis. Which begs the question: Has this mighty and imposing god, who typically takes a decidedly masculine form on his excursions to the mortal realm, ever taken the form of a woman and accepted a ritual offering in the form of a bunch of flowers? The sparse historical records on the one hand and the plethora of rumors of obscure origin on the other means that, while this claim is more or less impossible to verify, it also cannot be simply dismissed as baseless speculation." And on top of that, Zhongli's very first official birthday art seems to be a subtle nod to this, as he's depicted with a bouquet of flowers (and that art also contains some other fun details as well, but that's for a different topic).

As for the title of "The Knave" in chinese being 仆人... I wasn't sure at first cause I'm much more into Japanese than Chinese BUT 僕 (which is the non-simplified version of 仆) in Japanese can also mean "servant", yes, just like in Chinese, but it's also a widely used semi-polite first person MASCULINE pronoun (an "I" but one that mostly only guys can use). And it got me digging. And I found this definition of the word in classical Chinese: 古时男子谦称自己 - it basically translates to "an old way for MEN to address themselves". It's followed by an example from the Zhan Guo Ce (Annals of the Warring States) so it seems that it used to be, in fact, a masculine pronoun in Chinese, too. So, to sum it up, although the word 仆人 doesn't imply gender in itself, the character 仆 kinda does. Oh, and just now I found a definition of 仆人 as 古代太仆等官的通称 - "a common name for the Grand Servant (one of the Nine Ministers) and similar titles in ancient times". I can't find any information on who exactly the Grand Servant was but judging from my knowledge of Imperial China, ministers didn't use to be women lmao

All of the comedia del arte characters can be referred to by a wide range of names and this is one of them-though “Colombina” is the more prevalent name. I adore your videos about queerness in Genshin. It's amazing and i'm picking up a lot more of those subtle hints ingame now because now i'm actually paying attention to them! By the way, i also thought Venti was a girl at first. My inital reaction back in 2020 was something like "omg who is that adorable girl with a fairy dragon???" Mihoyo is simply killing it with the way they are designing their characters (Looking at our bisexual magic femboy Lyney for example) and it's beautiful and i love the content that you make from it!

I will never understand why anyone would be so obsessed with gender. I don´t think I ever thought about my gender I just exist and think of more interesting and important things. Just a personal take though. If gender stresses you out so much why bother worrying about it? Same with sexuality. I´m gay or bi or idk honestly I just am and I don´t really care i like what i like and I am who I am and people percieve me however I present myself. I think practicing self-love and building up confidence is much more important than thinking about gender or sexuality or what flag you wanna add to your wall today. AGAIN just a personal take. As for Arlecchino: She is "father" because it is her title and because the Tzaritza is "mother" (the region the fatui are from is based on "mother" Russia) and the title "father" is just the title that is given to her. Her REAL name is Ada. Signora´s name is Rosalyne, Columbina is Elysia, ... the names were released a while ago. I don´t think there´s much else to look into.

Honestly, I didn't expect Zhongli to be an example here, but earth is literally the thing out of which all life sprouts, with water being the thing that fuels that life. So, if we are to take the analogy of earth and air seriously with both Venti and Zhongli, it's basically that both of them are some sort of genderfluid/gender queer/some other thing that we simple mortals do not understand. I can also bet all my money (there isn't that much, honestly) that both would at one point respond to the question "What's in your pants?" with a simple "Godhood." Edit: Holy moly, I just realised that ACTUALLY only three women wear pants in Genshin and it's Jean, Furina and Arlecchino. Edit 2: Turns out that Yelan also wears pants, and I only realised this thanks to someone who replied to this comment.

I feel like it isn't so much that Genshin's gender-queerness, like its queer-coding in general, are not appreciated; MiHoYo aren't exactly subtle about if you have any idea what to look for. I still absolutely love that you are one of the only channels I know of that really focuses on how non-conformist Genshin is. ❤

thank you so much for your videos. as someone already mentioned in the comments, razor's struggles with identifying either as wolf or human is something a lot of genderqueer people can relate to. even though he wants to be like his family, a regular wolf, he understands that he will never be them and it causes him pain ("My Lupical is my only family. But I don't have four legs, not like them. Because I'm not a real wolf. Sometimes it makes me sad."), yet he also acknowledges the fact he is no ordinary boy and for him it doesn't feel right to identify as such. after reaching certain friendship level he starts accepting the fact that he is neither, there are people who love him just as he is, he doesn't need to fit in this system, he can be just himself around people he loves ("When I run with you when I hunt with you, I'm happy. With you I'm not a wolf, I'm not a boy, *I'm just me. I'm Razor* Because you're my friend, you're my Lupical. I hope it makes you feel happy too"). slay razor and may all gender nonconforming pals find peace with themselves

hi anthropology enthusiast here. ok so like correct me if im wrong ofc but when buddhism diffused to china from india through the silk roads, one figure that came along with it was a boddhisattva called avalokiteshvara. they came to be known as “guanyin” in china. in china, whenever guanyin came down to earth to answer prayers and such, they were always depicted in a variety of manifestations, both male and female!! overall guanyin is seen as a genderless deity which is pretty cool. and i bet that rex lapis is def inspired by deities like that from real life chinese religion 👍 it was cool to hear about this genderless aspect of him in this video!!

Another argument that biology isn't representative of the gender at all is because many parameters in our body are regulated by hormones, and depending on the quantity of hormones you produce, you will end up "more like a girl" or more like a boy" (I hate to say it that way but English isn't my native language and this is more simple). So it isn't just about the chromosomes you have XX / XY / XXX / XXY / X /... but the different genes in those can affect the quantity of testosterone (for example) that one produces, thus having many consequences throughout our body and behavior.
@Avis0123

I also have a headcanon/believe that Ei (Beelzebul) wouldn't really care for her gender (or would just be genderqueer) if it weren't for Makoto (Baal). I like to think that Makoto thought of herself as a woman and Ei, feeling like she has to be whatever her twin is, also decided to take on a form of a woman. And after Makoto died, she decided to stay that way to honour her sister, much like Venti with the bard. I know that this is actually not written anywhere or really even hinted at, but I just think that all Archons are genderqueee to some extent and having Raiden "choose" her gender to mimic her sister is just so her. Also, Nahida would be the same with her just being a clone of Rukkadevata (I definitely spelled that wrong).
@MorbidEel

Well it seems like none of the archons are actually human so they are all shapeshifters. Venti is a wisp, Zhongli is an adeptus, Nahinda is a branch ...so part of a tree, Furina was an oceanid, Ei/Makoto is unknown AFAIK.

im surprised you didn't talk about how in the Liyue archon quest where we go fetch some perfumes for the Rite of parting, Paimon points out that the statue seemed to react most with the perfume that old ladies like, and wonders if Rex Lapiss is an old lady, Zhongli responds by saying that perhaps he is. heres the dialog (i totally didn't copy and paste from the wiki haha) (Statue glows) Paimon: Oh... what was that? (Traveler dialog choice i assume) Looks like Rex Lapis really likes this one. (other Traveler dialog choice) I guess the final answer is number three. Paimon: That's the one older ladies like, right? Paimon: Does that mean that Rex Lapis is actually an older lady? Zhongli: Haha, perhaps, perhaps. Zhongli: Rex Lapis has taken on countless forms. Perhaps that really was one of them. someone has probably already pointed this out but whatev lol

Also in the rite of parting, when we are picking a perfume, the statue of the seven of Rex lapis reacts positively to the perfume that was supposedly “liked by older ladies”. I like to think that Arlecchino chooses to actively use male names and titles to challenge the men in power. Often, women are a bit overlooked even with powerful names, but if she is referred to as “Father” and “Arlecchino” instead of the female title of “Mother” or “Arlecchina” due to male titles seeming to demand higher authority. No but, you saying you like venti the normal amount is me with arlecchino. She has a lot of gender ambiguity, especially for Genshin standards, which makes me feel very heard as a non-binary who presents masc. Then again, I also HC Arlecchino to be lesbian or sapphic due to how Colombina and Arlecchino in Dellarte are usually implied lovers. Either way, this video makes me feel heard, because the amount of times I’ve seen people shut me down for saying Arlecchino is gender ambiguous is so insane.

Unrelated to everything your makeup in this video is very slayiana. Incredibly powerful. On topic tho, I'd like to point our attention to a few additional bits and bobs that might bolster your arguments here. In Arleccino's case, I find it interesting that both her and her predecessor are she/her in charge, for a few reasons. Obviously its not unheard of for women to have important positions or hold power, but I think there's a particularly interesting juxtaposition at play here. The House of the Hearth is an orphanage where she takes care of children, which is the role/job historically assigned to women (whether they wanted it or not). They're supposed to be the "gentle caregivers", while men are supposed to be the "strong, working hard, bread winners." However, Arleccino has multiple masculine titles, including Father, whom "traditionally"/historically is the head of the household, the one in charge, the one to whom all important decisions should be deferred, etc blah blah. She also has some traditionally or typically masculine roles - the head of the household, the leader of the organization, the one who gives orders, etc. Aside from her androgynous appearance, she is quite literally Fathering and Mothering at the same time. In some sense, she is performing the "prescribed roles" of both genders while adhering to the expectations/expression of neither. IIRC she is described in ways that are both masculine and feminine, including some of her behaviours, and she doesn't speak or carry herself in a way that is overtly masc or fem (at least in English translation). All while slaying in that gorgeous gorgeous outfit. I love her. I think I want to be her lowkey idk idk.

I'm sure there's more vtubers who are also similar to her but I'm not active in the vtuber community so i only know a couple of them. And regarding Arlecchino i personally like her because she's one of the few women who wear pants. Not to mention the fact that she's called "father" multiple times. She's the equivalent of a strong single mother who's filling in both roles for her children. This one's got nothing to do with gender I also heard she's a very just person? Idk if that's true because we barely saw her in the archon quest. I personally don't care what pronouns people call me by because i feel like it's not really worth my time. But i always thought shape shifting is a neat superpower because you can be anything you want. You can fly like a bird or swin like a fish. Zhongli never talks to Ying'er during that quest and it's Ganyu we run into while picking glaze lilies. The perfume was made with silk flowers and we got the three types of flower from one of the merchants in town. The interesting thing about Zhongli and the perfume is when Paimon asks if maybe Rex Lapis is actually an older lady since the perfume the statue responded to was the one Ying 'er said was popular with older women and Zhongli doesn't really....correct her.
