Gary Green is a very underappreciated guitar player

Most people believe that the best musician (or instrumentist if we are talking only about his ability to play) is the one who blows everyone out with a lot of technicality and complex lines, when the point about Gentle Giant as a whole is that they use their skills to take the maximum output of quality in every song. Gary Green is a perfect example of this: how to play in order to make the melody shine out of the surface of a complex and intricate composition. Such a genius.

@@augustovasconcellos19 Underrated in that he isn't namedropped or put into lists, but then again, let's put this into perspective, he's not unique enough for the genius label - he's more "the Martin Barre you've never heard of"

@@Grithron2 Actually, I was not talking specifically about the fact that he is underrated or not. My point here is that the band wouldn't be the same without him. He is clever enough to use his best qualities to improve the output of the compositional process of Ray and Kerry, even if he does not participate in it: he brilliantly plays his role considering what he is expected to do. You can apply the same to Genesis without Hackett, Renaissance without Jon Camp, etc.

I agree Gary Green is very underrated guitar player,he is very good solid player,I would rather listen to him then those guys that play 1000 notes it 5 seconds, those guys don't impress me at all.

Music is applied mathematics - top ten commercial music is like counting on your fingers - Gentle Giant is advanced calculus. So cool to see you enjoy their complexity and calculated chaos. I was fortunate enough to see them live three times. Most amazing performances I've ever experienced.

Brilliant reaction Tre 👍. You're right, every band member brings something, and the synchrony between them, all those intricate musical lines, is nothing short of miraculous.

Be aware that the studio version of this song has a through-composed instrumental section that they never played live - they replaced it with the funky breakdown part. GG tended to radically re-arrange songs for the stage - usually to simplify them (believe it or not!) and make more room for improvisation - so it's usually best to check out studio versions first.

It's the early to mid 70s over in Merry ole England and the Prog rock vibe is in full effect. Sorry to offend, but thank god punk rock came along and blew this genre off the map. Much like American funk soul (Sly, Funkadelic, James Brown, Marivem Stevie, Curtis, etc) saved many of us from the David Geffen Soft Pop California Country Rock vibe. Is there talent here with Gentle Giant? Sure. But does it groove? Nope Hence my objection. But we all have our own scene and I respect individual passions.

Sorry, but you're way off the mark here. If ever there was a prog band who really COULD groove it was these guys. Just look at the movement and energy on stage in this clip! Listen to Ray and Kerry's funky bass/keys combo, and Gary's gorgeous bluesy guitar solo. Gentle Giant had groove for days, man.

Ah, and even here some early punk (and metal as well) was inspired by prog rock. Not in the case of Gentle Giant but rather Van fer Graaf Generator and the bands vocalist/songwriter Peter Hammill, once described Britain's gloomiest man. Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, and Sid Vicious - or maybe Johnny Rotten, or both have cited him as an influence. So if you'd to hear some proto-punk (that has nothing to do with Gentle Giant) check out Peter Hammill's Nadir's Big Chance.
