Finally finishing off the multi-stage GeoCache along the San Francisco Bay Trail. This is an excellent cache to do by bicycle with a bit of off-trail hiking thrown in for extra measure.
I recall coming out to this location some years ago. I was looking for some off-pavement bike paths along the eastern side of SF Bay in the Fremont area. I think this trail has been here for quite some time, but it has no signage along the main road to indicate it's presence. I think I followed some of the way points in the cache description, but I must have never recorded any of the information needed to solve for the final location. I had also seen the hike out to Stage 3 of this cache and at that time, it seemed like an impossiblity. I must have been there in the late fall or early spring when the ground was very muddy.
So fast forward to the weekend before and I decided to check out this trail again. This time I stopped and picked up the information from Stage 1 at the observation deck, then I grabbed the information at Stage 2 and then got to the end of the trail. I had forgotten about the long hike through the brush to Stage 3. I tried going out a ways, but didn't have the way points loaded and wasn't sure about the route to follow. I think I also picked up a load of mosquito bites on my legs that showed up the following week.
With a cooler day forecast, I got out the long cycling pants, with a fresh spray of Permethrin and headed back to the Coyote Creek Lagoon trail. With the 3 way points loaded and satellite view working on Google Maps, it was easy to follow the faint path out to Stage 3, it's fairly visible on screen. While it's no longer required to come out to Stage 3, as the needed information can be found in the cache logs, I feel it's important to come out anyway. Plus, it's probably the best view in the whole lagoon, being the highest point.
Armed with the final cache location, just ride back to the parking lot area, out the unsigned driveway, across Fremont Blvd. and the cache is fairly close by. This is a traditional cache, with trinkets for trading and a notepad for a log. It dates back to 2004, so is one of the earlier caches on the GeoCaching.com web site:

It turns out this cache is a remake of an even older cache from 2003:
