'You knocked my block off', is up there with 'You sunk my battleship', 'Operation?', and 'Broadsword', as classic advert phrases.

Just added these to my collection (again - sold my originals years ago for beer - lol). WOW was it hard to find decent copies! Finally found a set that was crisp, but dirty. A good clean will have them looking new again. Thanks for posting this interview!

Every time Geof Darrow graces the Kayfabe studios it’s the greatest treat ever. What a blast having his commentary on Hard Boiled (the first Darrow I ever read). Thank you all for your time, and I’m so glad you guys are friends, as we now seem to get a healthy dose of Geof on the channel often. Keep it up!!

You are not alone Ed. I too thought Geoff came over from France or Scotland. It makes sense. His style felt very European to me. When Harboiled came out Dark Horse had just begun introducing us to many Euro artists through DHP and Cheval Noir. But now that I've been exposed to comics from all over the world, I see Geoff as this amazing amalgamation of American Underground, 80s European, and Manga detail. In other words, he's his own thing.

Hard Boiled is probably my favorite comic of all time, and Geof my favorite artist, comic or otherwise, of all time. I got my hands on HB right when it came out, when i was 11 years old, and being just completely blown away by it. It's one of the few media of any kind that i get the same feeling reading it now as i did when i first read it, still finding new Easter eggs every time. I also had no idea there was a HB video game

Yes, Geof Darrow....again!!!! You guys are reallly living the dream. Please pass along our thanks to uncle Geof for taking the time to sit down once again with Cartoonist Kayfabe. What an absolute legend. It's so funny, I just found the long out of print hardcover copies of Shaolin Cowboy yesterday at Chamblin's Bookmine in Jacksonville and was very pleased to pick those since they were printed in larger size than the trades which were just re-released in the last year or so.

I love Willeford’s Cockfighting novel. His attention to detail is phenomenal about how he trains and preps the roosters for death matches, while he’s dealing with the different characters in that gambling scene. The film adaptation with Warren Oates wasn’t as raw as the book. Oates was such a great actor. The film is called Born To Kill (1974). And Miami Blues (1991) with Alec Baldwin and Fred Ward was pretty awesome as well.

James Robinson and Tony Daniel used the "Jesus Chrysler" logo in an early issue of STARMAN--one of the O'Dare cops is 'interrogating' a punk while holding him down on the hood of a car. They acknowledged the source with an "After Darrow", also in chrome. I remember picking these up fresh off the rack, my eyeballs acting like electron scanning microscopes to catch all of the minute details contained therein. Excellent work, Unca Geoff! 🖖♾

I wonder if the guys who developed the Fallout games took the satirical take of nuclear-powered cars that explode into little mushroom clouds on impact from Hard Boiled. I know Bethesda commissioned Darrow for tie-in comic to one of their games years later, so somebody there likes his work at least.

Mikal Gilmore was a ROLLING STONE writer that covered a lot of Pop Culture stuff. I remember he did a big article on Miller's DARK KNIGHT. Mikal's brother Gary was executed for killing 2 mormons. I think he may have been one of the last convicts to be executed via firing squad..

at 54:25 Geof calls the 3D sound effect for the police siren "a bit of that Richard Corben direction with sound" Can anyone point me to an example of that? My knowledge of Corben is way too superficial. It does remind me of Wood/Kurtzman "Sound Effects!" with the femme fatal screaming across 3 panels.

So was Hard Boiled supposed to be a sort of early Sin City type story that went a different direction once Miller saw the art? Also, it’s funny to think of Miller worrying about wounds being realistic considering the amount of carnage he puts his characters through…

I fucking love how most of the storytelling in this book is actually done by the backgrounds rather than the main characters or dialogue. I don't think I ever saw another comic do that in such a way. Most people I've talked about this book would say that it's kinda lame 'cause nothing really happens and that always felt weird to me 'cause there's actually so much going on.
