Another of the really old songs that people are covering to help keep them in the public memory. Written 75 years ago by Merie Travis with the most known version recorded in 1955 by Tennessee Ernie Ford. The Wiki page for the song has a long list of people that have covered it over the years like Elvis and B. B. King back in the 50's Stevie Wonder in the 60's Johnny Cash in the 80's

@@chrisrutledge8170 yes there is it's his first Actually full chest note below F#1, it's very clearly an Eb1? He said himself there's no Subharmonics either so wut you mean, I raised the track by an octave and slowed it down and it was a VERY clear Eb2 so it's a Eb1?

I love Geoff's version of this song. I remember listening to Tennessee Ernie Ford sing this song. Being born in the 60's and the fact that grandpa loved this song.

I don't think you understand the history of this song - it has nothing to do with slaves (or at least not a traditional definition of slavery). This has to do with coal mining camps, where workers were paid in company scrip instead of cash. The scrip could only be spent at a "company store" run by their employers. They were literally working themselves into debt because they couldn't store up cash savings - everything they made went right back to their bosses. Merle Travis originally wrote this song using his father (a coal miner) as inspiration.
