Napoleon didn't destroy the culture, but the economy... And France still won't give the money back. Love Mr Holder no less for that oversight though.

Yes - important to remember that to this day France insists on Haiti paying debt for the loss of income from giving enslaved Haitians their freedom - which they themselves earned! So Napoleon wasn’t such a “good loser.”

@@sheemakarp6424 It wasn't Napolean but Charles X who demanded that Haiti pay that money. Not that it wasn't scummy...but it wasn't Napoleon. The Haitians were not such "good winners" either. From Wikipedia: The independence of Saint-Domingue was proclaimed under the native name 'Haiti' by Jean-Jacques Dessalines on 1 January 1804 in Gonaïves and he was proclaimed "Emperor for Life" as Emperor Jacques I by his troops. Dessalines at first offered protection to the white planters and others. However, once in power, he ordered the massacre of nearly all the remaining white men, women, children; between January and April 1804, 3,000 to 5,000 whites were killed, including those who had been friendly and sympathetic to the black population.
