I heard this years ago on the radio. Since then l have searched for it again and again. The film was nothing like as good as this reading. It keeps one hooked.

Which film? If you mean the 1970's version with Peter O'Toole I agree. But there is one made in 1943 with Walter Pidgeon, director Fritz Lang. This is also not as gripping as the book, but it's better than O'Toole's version

This is the most inadvertently funny drama I've ever heard, brilliant, so utterly ridiculous - the protagonists is such a pompous tit and the arrogance of the writer having everyone treat him with deference because he's a British aristocrat. Couple of bits inparticular are so crazy - he's on the run in enemy territory and a complete mess - runs into a stranger who he asks to go procure for him a bunch of specific stuff and the guy does it lol! Then that bit at the end where you find out (spoilers ahead) that he's been shitting in a chamber of his underground hidden hole for six months and so it stinks down there - why didn't he have his shits whilst out creeping around? And that bit where he buys some guy's homemade bicycle and sidecar but to do so first travels with them to the seaside - preposterous! Love this idiotic story!

Overlooking the idiocy of pretending to hunt a foreign leader, there are a few questions: where did he get all the money from when initially on the run? The foreign police would have taken it when they searched his pockets. Or was the large amount if money in the trousers he stole by the river? Then when he was stowing away in the empty water tank on the ship, how did not get discovered by his snoring, which could also be heard in the captains cabin through the connecting water pipe? How did he get rid of his toilet material while in the water tank? It would be better if someone edited the story down to about 1.5 hrs.
