Oh my I was just thinking about this the other day and wondering if this was possible. Thank you!

wow this looks so usefull! one question, are we able to add our own wifi-points, to make sure that a certain area is well "covered"?

If you have your own wifi points, and you know where they are, you can use the FSPL yourself to trilaterate a location.

Curious to know if you need device movement to calculate a set of distances to an AP given that you may not know the AP' full strength (0 metres) and therefore would need to perform at least two measurements at different distances to establish the drop off rate and from that calculate the AP location.

what if we have more than 3 wifi access points? Also is it possible that with 4 wifi nodes gelocation api returning "not found" but on adding one more node i.e 5 nodes now-it may return lat long ?

How do I get my latitude and longitude coordinate values of current location, which could be displayed in a text area or at least as a toast in my Android program in Android studio(Gmaps API of it) ?

Sounds very nice! bit Does this API something new makes battery drain or other apps can use this to keep the phone awake?
@LaurenceMoroney

It's a call to a web service -- so you wouldn't really have any battery drain other than the usual for a web call.

can anyone please explain how it gives location coordinates without any reference point to start with? is it pinging to access points and getting their locations first?
@humazed2901

yes he mentioned that you need to get access points and calculate your location relative to them.

Do you planning to use other techniques for the indoor location, for example BLE? Thanks.

I think Places API is great for that, particularly in locations where there's lots of known places -- like a shopping mall

Is it possible to use it in shopping centers as a shadowing of the user and how can you find out the floor?

I'd recommend the Places API for that.

@lmoroney That's Great..! Is that possible to add offline features? What I mean is...Can we get the rough estimate of the distance between APs approximately in meters and not through Google API calls..? And What about the technics need to be used while estimating a multi-storey building..which involves many floors and finding the exact floor..!
@laurencemoroney655

You could use the FSPL formula to calculate distance using trilateration yourself if you know where the access points are. For a multi storey building, I recommend using the Places API if that building has a lot of known places -- like a mall.

Thank You for your Response..! It's Great to Know this feature...Will play around this FSPL and Places API soon...! Looking forward to more videos, updates like this..!

Is FSPL used by Google Play Services Location provider by default in case when GPS is not available?
@LaurenceMoroney

The Fused Location Provider which mashes up a bunch of things, like GPS, beacons, wifi etc. is used by Google Play services.

Using this will it be possible to locate point of sale devices. These either use sim cards, therfore have a msisdn number, or use WiFi?

A POS could find it's own location, and then broadcast that to peers, maybe?
@Dr_Watcher

The POS device doesn't have a GPS unit within them.

But they use WiFi -- so they can sniff for WiFi access points around them, getting the signal strength, and use that to trilaterate their location, which they could then broadcast.

I love the Raspberry Pi, that's why I use it a lot -- check out my Cloud.NEXT sessions where I used a Robot built on Pi to do trilateration... :)
