Nice tutorial! I never thought to use a map range node for inverting a selection. I have always used a Boolean math node set to "not".
@KaizenTutorials

Thanks! Well that works haha, i’ve just always used map ranges. But I imagine you can use a few more nodes probably to get it aswell. Maybe a colorramp or a math node! Now all we need to know is; which one is computationally the lightest! Haha

Very good tutorial. I love that you summarize the entire thing at the end!
Very nicely explained! Thank you so much! However, as an architect, I can't help but notice how your column is breaking lots of rules that are inherent to the classical Doric order. Doric columns are placed directly onto the stylobate (no separate base), the proportions of the capital are way off, and (detail) you didn't apply the so-called entasis; the column should bulge slightly outwards as the diameter is decreased from the bottom upward. All these rules make a very interesting case for geometry nodes indeed. I hope you don't take my remarks as criticism, because I very much appreciate your tutorial!
@KaizenTutorials
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Always good to see people having passion for these types of things and I couldn't agree more that this is NOT in fact a accurate Doric column. Honestly it might be more roman than anything haha. Nonetheless though it get's the job done and was mostly intended as a vehicle for teaching GeoNodes concepts anyways. But I appreciate you taking the time to explain how Doric columns actually work! Thanks :-)

@@KaizenTutorials If one gets really good at GN, is it generally faster than modelling it? Assuming one is very good at modelling too. I see the power in the proceduralism, though wondering for one-off models if it's even better. Models that have fairly basic geo, such as architecture.

@@taunado Hmm I don't think so. This was relatively simple, but more complex models will become exponentially harder to do with GN. So I'd always try and balance the amount of models you need essentially.

Interesting tutorial, but I am curious to know if this could also be used to create an Ionic or Corinthian column (the second and third shown in the reference sheet), or would the capitols for those have to be modeled the traditional way? What would be the best way of creating round ended flutes using geonodes?
@KaizenTutorials
6 ай бұрын
I've seen people do insane things with GN, so I'd bet that it would be possible. Having said that; for GN tools you should ALWAYS ask yourself if it is worth it. If you're making a game and need 1000's of unique column models than it's worth it. If you don't need it then maybe just model them regularly saving tons of time :-)

Very interesting indeed, would this be worth doing if you're developing assets for a game? I know of making procedural buildings and stuff in unreal (which is what I use) and am curious if this can tie into such things or more so used for just making things within blender?
@KaizenTutorials
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We'll I'm not sure if you could integrate the procedural workflow from Geometry Nodes to Unreal. But you could definitely use this just fine for game assets. I would imagine being able to create an unlimited amount of assets by generating new versions in Blender, applying the modifier and exporting it for game engines such as Unreal. So it would be an easy way of getting 10 different types of columns in a matter of minutes.

Amazing tutorial. Why did we do the tapering part when creating the segment array? Ah, I think because you tapered it in the beginning and after creating the array the tapering effect went away? Right?
@KaizenTutorials
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Well the first taper is just to determine the segment itself sloping inward. But this creates overlap if we add the array without a second scaling taper. Since the columns don’t have these overlaps we need a secondary taper, just to fix this. Hope this makes sense haha!

@@KaizenTutorials Haha, thanks. I saw lots of ancient stuff lately and this is amazing. Actually I saw your latest post on Patreon. I couldn't read the full post because it is locked. But apparently you updated the pillar generator. What did you change? One thing that is really interesting and that I'm currently working on is a pillar that looks like the real roman and greek pillars. If you look at roman pillars on google the "star shape" actually doesn't always make up the whole pillar. It actually is a "U" shape at the bottom and top of the pillar. Do you think this is too complex to achieve with geo nodes or do you think that this is doable with curves? Thanks in advance.
@KaizenTutorials
2 жыл бұрын
I updated some nodes, added a remesh setup to get better geometry around the segments and cleaned up some nodes to make the entire thing more efficient. The U shape was something I did work in the beginning of creating this GN system. I wanted to use booleans for it instead of curves, but the entire thing became super slow. So I went back to this current setup. It's probably possible to do though with curves. I just don't know how haha
@firatcicek9885
2 жыл бұрын
@@KaizenTutorials I actually solved the issue. I wanted to replicate the same way the pillars are usually modeled in tutorials. I decided to use a cylinder node and inset all the side faces and extrude them in. However this setup didn't work as intended. So I talked to someone on the blender discord who was incredibly helpful. The node setup got a bit complicated but the end results are great.

I messed up somewhere and can’t figure it out even after watching the video again… When I decrease Column width size the base and capital and cylinders get smaller, when I increase the column width they get larger… So for instance if I have a column width of 3m, the Base and Capital and cylinders are 10 m for some reason… UPDATE: I got it to work! On the Drum Shape the column width needs to go to the first value on the Math Divide Node, and the second value is set to 2.000. I had it reversed at first, so it was messing it up. My bad!

Why having ones/tutors face overlayed, when the main stuff happens in the application. To be precise you have an "expensive" mic in front of you, but by making gestures as like one doing it still even on a smartphone, your head is shifting in every direction. And so does your mouth, which changes the loudness to the mic. So this distracts from the content in audible sense, as already in visual sense.
