Why? Turkey has been looking after over 3 million Syrian refugees for years. The refugees are treated well and are given tax privileges and free education and health care. I have first hand experience of this.

As long as Turkey cooperates with Syria then I think they should be given a pass on their mistakes. Meanwhile.. The US should pay reparations to many countries. Turkey tried to play both sides but its becoming more and move evident that they need to choose a side. Either live in eternal lies or face reality and abandon this EU/NATO nonsense. Join the BRICS and leave NATO. The days when they had to fear uncle Sam are gone now. There is no going back, Neither Russia or China will be playing along anymore. People simply had enough of the US dictatorship and more and more nations including Saudi Arabia are leaving this toxic "alliance". Hopefully Turkey and Japan make the right decisions as well.

Syria's richest resource is not oil, it is the strength of their people. Russian soldiers have commented on it, as well as the beauty of the mountains and coastline. Turkey may have a large military, but they also have massive inflation. They must deal with decadent, racist Europe, which hates Turks and refugees. There must be a reason that the many of the world's religions began in the Levant area -- is it possible that this same spiritual strength will stand up to the insane West and unite the Arab world? President Putin has immense knowledge of history (unlike many world leaders) and the multipolar shift may allow many besieged nations to heal. Peace, and thank you, Kevork

Syria must recover as soon as possible Al Jazeera areas for national and economical reasons. If Turkey does not want to have Kurdish separatists based in Syria, it should help the Syrian government to impose a purely linguistic and communal decentralisation within a unified Syrian State. And this means that Turkey must actively intervene within NATO to force USA (and Israel) to withdraw all its forces and secret agents from Syrian Al Jazeera areas (and eventually from Iraqi Kurdistan too). In the same time, Turkey must also help economically Syria to be reconstructed as a manner to restore some minimum trust between Ankara and Damascus. Problems will happen with Syrian refugees in Turkey coming back home but who have been brainwashed during the last ten years by takfiri ideology, but maybe the fact that Turkey is going to betray its former Syrian proxies will help those refugees to understand they should have put their trust in their own country and their own State ?

Hello Kevork, I've just subscribed for the second time. Hopefully the gremlins will behave, long enough for me to receive a notification this time. As for Turkey's twisting and turning, I think They had better make up their mind and FAST or they will be left out in the cold by All sides. They don't belong in Europe (which is dying anyway) Russia is getting sick of their double dealings and I doubt the Arab countries have any reason to Trust the words from Erdogan's lips. Blessings from New Zealand, to the Peoples of Syria, may you find Peace and Sovereignty.

Excellent insight - much appreciated. Loose, unsubstantiated comments from me that may have bearing : a. Turkey has dug itself into a deep hole and at the moment is not able to play Russia and US of against each other. Objectively it needs to move away from US but subjectively is unable. So it stays in hole. b. if US were to leave Syria then Kurds would would need to be more conciliatory and Turkey may well accept a non violent solution if guaranteed by all parties. I don't understand Assad's toleration of US supporting Kurds but he must haver reason , c. Putin has clearly backed off being played by Erdogan and the last year or so has seen cooling in Turkish/Russian relationship, something that Turkey seems now to want to recover, d. whilst Russia had saved Assad it has pretty well accepted Turksih and Israeli (at least) attacks on Syria, e. despite this Assad (of whom I'm not a fan) has firmly held his ground against a host of hostile or unhelpful parites proving he is a leader of the future who can adapt and lead Syria to better times. Certainly he is not jumping at the chance to bow to the Caliph in Ankara even if Russia would like that. Finally, the key to all this is my view that Turkey is in a hole and cannot continue its game playing. How/if it adapts will determine (for now) the outcome for Syria. Would be good to have a serious, in depth program on Turkey

The relationship between Syria and Russia began since Tsarist times. Russia has always seen itself as protector or patron of the large Eastern Orthodox Church of Syria. Needless to say that after WWII, the Soviet Union was instrumental in helping Syria in the post colonial era. Syria has benefited greatly from this relationship but it was and still is a two way street. Had operation Timber Sycamore succeeded in regime change in Damascus, Russia would have lost its only major naval base on the Mediterranean. Syria and Iran secure Russia’s southern flank. They are extremely important geopolitical assets for Russia. I am certain that president Putin is keenly aware of this. When Netanyahu vomited his outrageous lies in front of his bought choir, the US Congress, he suggested a NATO type alliance in the Mideast. Well such an alliance would be more likely and make sense be between Moscow, Damascus and Teheran. Yemen would definitely participate and who knows what other Gulf country may join. That is I think a defense agreement that’s overdue.

Seeing a path toward mutual prosperity. WEF , the SDG,s and the renewed vigor toward infrastructure that lays the foundations needed to truly integrate the regions into a socioeconomic body that functions optimally. That i believe is the focus of not only the BRICS but increasingly the world as a whole as the logic and fundamental need permeates the cultures. Its my belief that there are competitive forces and legacy that are attempting to hold a position that is contrary to the postions that are being built out. Hedgemony, seperstists, extremists.. you know the list. These ideological resistances are very well understood and it is my fundamental belief that common prosperity and aligning in porpose toward a integrated development model will over time address the needs and update the format toward a inclusion that is never possible without a clear vision that we already posses. Opposition will have no place to root.

Yes, definitely find a way to oust the military base of U Know Who out of Syria. This seems a good shoe horn way of doing it. Maybe Erdogan is seeing better prospects with SCO of which Turkiey is an observer & maybe aligning with BRICS. The question remains for me, where is the fist of U Know Who? Is it holding Turkiey's short hairs with Blackrock type hold on economy? In any case, both Russia & China seem to desire Turkiey in their fold.
