This is a lesson for any piano player who tries to lead a soloist through alternative harmonies not wanting to be lead. That's cool for a soloist who wants that, but not for those who don't. Know the difference.
George tells the story of Sonny Rollins taking George aside and asking him to adhere more to the basic changes Sonny wanted to play over. After all, Sonny was more of a bebop player who wanted to do his thing on top of the more standard changes rather than follow substitutions and more complex harmonies crafted by the pianist's comping.
It was an important lesson for young George and one from which many pianists can benefit.
After George's story, I asked Jazz Master chat for other tips on comping that can be found throughout my interviews with other pianists. It offered three by Richie Beirach and three more from Phil Markowitz.
