George Church’s current projects range from growing human organs to resurrecting the woolly mammoth. The Harvard genetics professor is at the cutting edge of genetic experimentation, having helped develop the first method for sequencing a genome and the gene editing tool CRISPR. Walter sits down with Church to discuss this transformative technology and address the ethical issues in genetic engineering.
They also discuss the controversy around his connection with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with whom Church had multiple meetings and calls and from whom he received research funding. Church has publicly apologized for those contacts.
Originally aired December 5, 2019.
