A great discussion. Friedman always make a point of contrasting the American system of governance with the European variant. Kudos to Mr. Jeremic for his great job of asking good questions and moderating questions from the audience. I was impressed with Mr. Jeremic's fluency and eloquence in English. I assume that he spent some time in the USA.

I am from Bulgaria and I think that he is right on the issue about the Balkans. We should stop looking for western Europe to lift us up, European funds are distributed very badly and go to a few rich families. We should unite as a Slavic people with similar culture, customs, geography and therefore similar future. If one country in the region gets richer the neighbors benefit because they will invest first in their neighbours, people will consume more, go to holidays etc. We should forget about the past and start creating the future, we are great people and our time has come. Western civilization reached its peak long ago and its in decline, everyone can see it. So we can use the opportunity and rise proudly, cooperating with our neighbors, EU , USA , Russia and Turkey but we should persuade our own national interests and that of our region. Balkan federation is also an idea that have been entertained in the past or some kind of Slavic union within the EU or outside. Love and respect for all Slavic people !

I hope all the slavs who watch it, do it just to know the enemy better. Noone shed more blood for slavs than Russians. Russia fought Turks, Austria, Germany for centuries (Ottomans, WW1, WW2..) even tried to help Yugoslavia, while it's own state (USSR) just crumbled. Friedman is promoting an idea that Eastern Europe should align with US. In fact he doesn't care about Europe, he just doen't want Russia or Germany to dare US dominance on the continent. Eastern Europe is a perfect division line, weak powers who can be easily manipulated in to submission, but no promise of good life comes with it. Everyone has to understand that wealth, knowledge and power are always close to a core. That is how power works, how empires built. The further you move away from the core the less wealth, knowledge and culture there is. Now look at the map. There is a power core in western Germany, France is close, it does ok, Czecks are less so, Poland is even less and countries like Greece who are in EU but just too far from the core are doomed to be poor outskirts, as long as they align to a German core (hence Financial turbulence). There is another core in Russia and one more in Turkey... Now is the time to decide for Eastern Europe. US was a core to align with during Cold War, but these days it just doesn't make seance. US is too far, too fat and to crazy to go along with.

Seem to me that mr. Friedman roll is to "educate" Europeans in how to, in the best way, support american interests in Europe. It almost appear as he is supported by who ever runs US to propagate his ideas of strong Poland and Turkey and looking at those counties politics it obviously is taking effect. Wonder if Serbs and Albans listening understands that their best option against ,by US supported, strong Turkey is to work together even if it means "Big Albania"

Balkan Federation (of equals) & prosper or else. What a good idea to make the region strong again. Similar to the V4 countries. The else can be a next Balcan war, based on what Mr. Friedman just outlined as 'influences' in the region not with the intention of peace, obviously.

what I found is plenty of rational and reasonable explanations why something has happaned and what may happens what I didn't heard is deeper (maybe not so rational) determinants of some USA actions e.g. USA engagement in Syria: from rational point of view it should enforced Asad (to be honest Syria before "arabic spring" seems to be one of the most reliable country in ME) but they played in opposit way. Why? because the sequence: Iran is favor Syria that's why to weeken Iran we destabilized Syria? sometimes (often) USA foreign policy is made of determinants that we don't hear btw: another great conference. History teaches us what happened, how things happened- it shld also teach us where and what to do to avoid the Holocaust, the 100 million Europeans who died uselessly during 1914-1945. One of the answer is the EU and NATO. I am surprised that Mr Friedman is very sceptic of these institutions - becoz of the Europeans super-ethnicism/nationalism. What's the choice if not a European Union- if not killing themselves again by the millions. Mr Friedman, aside from beautifully pointing us the lessons of history, point us how we can have a more peaceful world, or the world back to the past- holocaust, 100 millions Europeans dead, I appreciate his realism but it's a pity that he does not gives us hope- but pessimism of the past and his main point "go back to the past, fight it out and kill each other."
