I don’t think you can ever overstate the importance of this production. On so many levels it is a key moment in the history of the Broadway musical. I also think it’s one of the truly great scores ever written. The original production team were at the very top of their form here - and there are too many moments to mention from this show that are just so universal…thank you so much for posting this!

Listening to the orchestrations, it's unquestionable that it deserved its Best Original Score Tony.

Thank you for showing this. It brings back a flood of memories. I saw the Los Angeles Production at the Pantages Theatre in 1984. It was with Berry and Hearn, too. It was spectacular! I can still remember how the audience took a deep breath when Mr. Berry opened the show. He was so striking-looking and breathtakingly handsome that it pushed the audience back in their seats. I don't remember exactly how tall he was, but very. Maybe 6'4" or 6' 5" and shaped like a V. It was clear why he was a movie star. He must've been around sixty years of age at that time. I was in my early twenties. Now I'm in my sixties. Time slips past so quickly. There will never be another George Hearn or Jerry Herman that can bring life to the stage the way they did. Thank you again.

What memories this brings back! Saw this production twice, in '85 with Hearn and Van Johnson, and in '87 with Keene Curtis and Peter Marshall. Mr. Curtis, a very generous gentleman spent quite a while speaking with me afterwards, saying that the planned film version had to be put on hold, partly because of the AIDS crisis. There had been rumours that it would star Burt Lancaster as Albin and Kirk Douglas as Georges (not sure how seriously we should take that). Thanks for posting!!

What an impeccably staged smash. My first glimpse of the original production. Those entrances at around 32:19 down the fire pole still thrill. I can picture those chorines frantically running upstairs to line up for their cue. I wonder if it was inspired by Gower Champion's slide entrance from "Mack and Mabel?" Regardless, this really made me long for more Broadway from choreographer Scott Salmon. I noticed that although George Hearn is miked he seems to have a sizable voice, with "heft" as they sometimes say in opera. It's also very distinguished. I'd recognize it anywhere. And as for Gene Barry, imagine my mother's glee at the time that the "Burke's Law" TV detective, a "millionaire captain of Los Angeles Police homicide division Amos Burke, who is chauffeured around to solve crimes in his 1962 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud," was a theatre star and singer at heart? And I'd say very forward at the time to play a gay character. And I am grateful that you acknowledged the mysterious illness people were batting at the time.

Yes, George was the greatest. Don't find voices like that on B'way anymore (Marc Kudisch comes close). Not to be pedantic, but perhaps you mean distinctive for 'distinguished', though Mr. Hearn was certainly both.

"Little More Mascara" caused another jaw drop realization this a.m. George Hearn is singing the lyrics in different order than Albin is dressing. Example? The lyrics are "I put on my sling pumps again" whilst he is screwing in the earrings. As Mr. Hearn is singing about tucking in his gut & girdling his rear, he dons Zaza's wig. Bestow ANOTHER Tony on that Thespian!! Yep, he received one for La Cage, but surely a retro award should be considered for the counter-gymnastics his brain & body had to balance. Maybe just buff & polish the original? Peace be with you...Lukerdog
