Liszt has always been a composer close to my heart, as you can tell from the insane amount of times that I’ve played the second Hungarian Rhapsody :) Back then, I enjoyed playing his works because of the constant changes of colors, moods, and yes, I’ll admit, the sheer technical thrill and virtuosity that is often associated with his music. However, recently I have become more enamored with his expressive, and Wagnerian/operatic side. In this Sonetto, one instantly hears this, with a turbulent and very dramatic opening through the rising syncopated octaves. The opening section serves as a recitative of sorts, before leading to a heartfelt aria melody. There is so much longing that can be felt in this theme, and that sentiment mirrors the text of the sonnett; the narrator expresses an agonizing pain he feels over an unrequited lover. Liszt captures this beautiful image through the aching repeated notes, accompanied by a harp-like and consoling left hand. Liszt also takes the listener through several beguiling harmonic worlds, and by the end we are left with the haunted remnants of his love.
Over the past month, I tried to make the best out of these limited conditions, and I hope that my playing can deliver some comfort to you all. I would like to thank all of you for your support and love during this difficult time. This will be my second to last home concert video for this series, but will keep you all posted on any upcoming projects - I hope everyone can find a way to keep life on track, be curious, learn more things and keep being inspired.
Also, If you’re interested, please check my most recent CD which contains this piece, as well as the Tchaikovsky Concerto and a few other Liszt works - including the Don Juan fantasy (available on Spotify, iTunes, etc… link down below)
