George McKee enlisted in the U.S. Amy Air Corps in December 1940 and served as an aircraft mechanic instructor for the next two years. He was accepted for aviation cadet training in December 1942 and graduated as a pilot in September 1943. In March 1944 he was assigned to the 390th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, in the European Theater of Operations where he flew 35 combat missions. He then returned to the US in October 1944 where he was a B-17 and B-29 instructor pilot. McKee remained in service after World War II serving for the most part with the Strategic Air Command, where he commanded the 319th Bomb Wing, the 97th Bomb Wing, the 72nd Bomb Wing, the 38th Air Division and the 8th Air Force. He was the Commander of the Air Training Command at the time of his retirement from the Air Force in September 1975 with the rank of Lieutenant General.
