I bought one of these seven years ago and I still carry it in my purse. The pocket clip sucks rocks, it seems like it was never made for a knife that big. But if you know that going into buying one of these, you are good. I did have a screw that fell out from the clip but when I contacted Gerber to just receive the correct size screw, they sent me another clip as well as a bunch of screws for it. Certainly made me happy. I have used it for making cat5 network cables, opening boxes to cutting up a smoked brisket at our monthly potluck lunch when the boss forgot to bring a carving knife. It also just nice to pop out while walking to your car at night, just gives you that little piece of mind, at least for me anyway. That and walking to your car in the company parking lot with your Glock pulled can lead to a (nother) trip to the HR office, the Gerber is so much more discreet! The only thing that I have been told about these knives is that you need to watch the price and who makes them on Amazon. The price on mine was a little over $125 back in 2013, what they are now, I really don't know. The point was, if you found one for like $60 and claiming it as the real thing, you need to find out where it was made because it won't be an American made Gerber for sure. That and these hold an edge, are easy to sharpen and even without deploying the blade, bonking someone on the head, hand or arm with the pummel will definitely get your point across!

I do not have any direct experience with the FAST model, but it is basically this model with a spring assist, so I would expect the comparison is quite similar. I found this model to open so easily an assist wasn't even necessary. The assist is like icing on the cake.

4:57 I have one without the saftey, and if you rapidly tap the blade on the dull side, against the edge of a table, or what not, it will pop the liner/leaf lock, and fold. Also if you throw it, it will fold too! The later models have the liner lock.

i got the larger version. it saved my life over a decade ago when i got acoasted by group of 6 thugs. even though out numbered one of the thug stabbed me with a screw driver so i pulled my gerber out n thrusted into him. i normally dont condone violence but when one attacks u with a weapon with intent to injure or kill you got to defend urself. i did not pull my knife out till he stabbed me with screw driver. it was expensive knife in my country but u csnt put a value to life so i was grateful this knife allowed to to escape possible death. to this day my stab wound still has no nerve feeling anymore but i lived.

The variations refer to length......don't need the thumbstud or "flick" of the wrist. Its designed to open one handed without thumb stub but simply pushing the knife body in a staight line forward and abruptly stopping.Ive carried one since 1999.....at least I carry the full size version, not covert

4:15 I know someone who sharpened theirs, on the dull side, and it was unsafe when you folded it, because you would cut your fingers if not careful. Also the way it comes, allows you to slice an apple piece off, and put it up to your mouth, by the dull side. You cannot do that with both sides sharpened.

I noticed that the lock up is not early but I am not sure if someone can complain about since it's costs $100. I am not saying that the knife is cheap I am just saying that I don't know if someone can complain about the lock up not being early with this price. For me is not a deal breaker because the way I see, a knife like this is not a work knife but a defensive weapon, it's a knife to be sharped one time, carried and used only one time in life to defend your life. It's the way I would use it.

I am thinking to pick one of Spyderco PM2 or Gerber Combat. What would be your recommendation ? My purpose would be occasional carry for defensive and cutting an apple for my kid when outdoor. I would love to collect knives that are well made and last long time without falling apart.

Gautam Badveti This covert version is good one, better steel, America made. But, Folder is not suit for self defense, when lock system failed, you are done.
