My "Armbar" has become my daily carry. This is easy to carry and performs very well. The bottle opener/pry feature is ingenious. The knife size and design make this a very useful tool. There is something about this tool that is incredible you missed. you can fit a second double sided hex bit under the scissors and a toothpick or victorianox pen along side it. It does need a pocket clip but for $6 on amazon you can get perfectly adequate clips and rivet it onto the back where those random little holes are. The ability to carry 4, good quality tool bits on a multi tool that fits into a coin pocket of your jeans and aligns so nicely as a proper screw driver is AMAZING. i know of no other tool that can boast the same.

You don't necessarily need the driver to be locking if you understand the physics Gerber implemented. The driver stops past the center of the pivot axis. Therefore, as you apply a clockwise twisting force, that force will translate into a force that pushes the driver arm towards the open position. However, turning counterclockwise is a different story.

I like the Armbar, especially the knife blade. It is really a great knife. It is hard to believe, but, for such a compact tool, the Armbar's blade is about 5 mm longer than the blade on the Leatherman Free P4! It is almost the same length as that on the Charge, and is 5mm longer than the blade on the Skeletool. I laugh at complaints about the "poor steel" of the blade. 10 seconds once a week on a sheet of 1200-grit w/d emery paper is all I need to keep the blade razor sharp. If you want a multitool blade that will stay sharp for 12 months, keep dreaming! The scissors work well, and the screwdriver setup is very useful for the occasional need to deal with a screw. Note: "occasional use". If you are building furniture, use a dedicated screwdriver!! No workshop uses a multitool as the main set of tools. The awl is small, but good to scrape, poke a hole, or mark something. The hammer/pry bar/bottle opener is great for opening paint or varnish tins and for tapping the lids closed. Anyone whining about how you can't drive nails with it is just not living in the real world. It's not meant for that! The only other tool I need is a pair of pliers, and unfortunately, this is missing. The Armbar is a really great little compact multitool,with a first-class knife blade. Well done, Gerber!

Tnx I was looking at that yesterday. The blade looks great but the scissors are so so. I don't like completely exposed springs and as you said it doesn't open the blades enough. A folding pocket knife with a blade no longer than 3 inches, and when open no longer in total length than 6 inches, and non locking blade, is what can be carried in a public place. Anything outside of this definition is classed as an offensive weapon. Nothing to do with semantics or interpretation, that’s the law for UK (England and Wales).

I have their Center Drive multi-tool and love it, but the Extension multi-tool is not that great, but nice and I got two of them to put in my backpack and EDC bag. They are not the best with that tool and I don't think I would buy it though.

I like the design concept, just needs to be refined a bit in my opinion. Still, it's a pretty good pocket tool.

Thanks for the excellent review on this item. I kinda like it despite the design flaws. Too bad the scissors aren't better. Isn't Gerber owned by a scissors company?
@txtoolcrib

You're very welcome. Yes Gerber is owned by Fiskars. It would be better if they could redesign the scissors in their multi tools, not just this one.

@@txtoolcrib Agreed. I find the Gerber scissors "also rans", and Victorinox wins.

It’s a solid little tool that competes with my Victorinox tinker, I actually like the driver for light stuff more than the tinker, it’s not for heavy stuff. The only thing I think is an afterthought is the awl. Handy office and light duty device.

I was so excited about this but ...5cr15? Chinese clones don't even use that anymore! I don't know why Gerber even bothers using it. They have 420 HC, it would've been totally adequate. As a Brit, I wish that the blade was a slipjoint and the driver locked up. With some better blade steel and a locking driver it'd definitely replace my victorinox! Thanks for letting me know to not buy it. 😉

I was really disappointed to find out the steel they are using was even worse than I had originally thought as well.

@@txtoolcrib Unfortunately, I'm not confident they will listen to a few folks that uses their tools. Focus groups tends to be held very close to their offices. Something might be perfect in one spot of the world while it won't make the cut elsewhere.

Does it take universal bits? Are the bits proprietary?
@txtoolcrib

It takes standard sized bits, but they have to be double sided. Regular single sided bit will recess too deeply.
