I bought one in the mid 80s. Discovered that field grades don’t think much of reserve 2LTs running around in the field with MKIIs or any fixed blade on their LBEs. Anyway, the knife was marketed as a survival knife after the Viet Nam war came to a close - much like how Hasbro re-imaged G.I. Joe as an adventurer…. The MKII was never intended to be a survival or field knife in the utility sense, although Gerber continued to make bank on that later image.

Mine is razor sharp out of the box. It will do what it is intended to do, which is to do maximum damage on a thrust. It is not intended to hit concrete or bricks. It has been proven in Vietnam by the soldiers who have used it. Like a surgical scalpel it does its job without breaking bricks or concrete. It is intended to be used against human flesh and it is designed extremely well for that purpose. Mine is razor sharp out of the box and the leather sheath has no fiberglass to dull the edges when it is drawn. This is one of the best daggers ever designed.

@@pliskenx51mm83 I personally think this is still a liability. In a war situation, bad guys are likely to be wearing ceramic plates or have mags on the front of their vest. This knife was only marketed as a survival knife several decades ago because they threatened to stop selling it to the public because it only has one use- that’s when they put the serrations on it. There’s only one test this knife needs and that’s stabbing a pig carcass from behind up under the ribs. In that test this knife and the Fairbairn Sykes won’t be touched by any other knife.

I have vintage mk II fighting knives like the remake but made and serial numbered from back in the days. My uncle was an army ranger and his opinion of the Gerber mk II as a fighting knife was that it was ideal for it's intended purpose. Daggers are not Marine Corp fighting knives which are multirole and durable for punishing tasks. It is a surgical instrument designed to penetrate the most vital and vulnerable areas of the human body. It is excellent as a weapon in covert operations and as a lightning fast CQB knife that works as intended when kept sharp oiled and survivable and used for the intended manufacturers purpose.
