I love this knife and my only complaint was the sheath, but it gets better when you break it in.

There's a reason it's called a "spine." That would be the raised steel on the back of the handle--protects grips from baton-ing. Looks like a decent knife. Pity the steel is not hard enough to hold a good edge. Not sure what Gerber was thinking, other than cheap steel means low price.

I saw this knife at my local academy sports and outdoors and they had it for $19.00 so I purchased it. I find the retention and the knife absolutely fine, its a good tight fit, thats what you want when you're out and about. Less chance of an accidental deployment out of the sheath and a chance of losing it. Oh it also had an extra bonus it came with a very light long spork

Call me crazy, but the name of the knife is the Spine. So Ithink it is meant to have the spine raised, although not sure why.

There ain't no perfect knife, eh. But for 36 bucks this looks nice. Lots of good features. I think the raised tang is maybe a control feature.

Can you strike a ferro rod with it? That’s my biggest complaint about the Mora Companion is that it won’t strike a ferro rod without modification. I really like the Finn Hawk by Cold Steel over the Mora Companion for that reason and lanyard hole like this knife has.
@katigroszek

You may try and succeed but the spine edges are a bit rounded so it might be hard. Nevertheless you can strike a rod with anything - try a sheath clips or a piece of broken dinner plate. Both should work. It is not a flint.

Kinda dis agree if you look at reviews and ratings for what people are spending money on there not hitting it outta the park . Iv always held Gerber up as a survival standard back in the day because I couldn't afford the bear Grills stuff but thought it was the best woids gear. Now that i can afford the stuff iv found it all lacking Especially the bear Grills branded stuff! Even the positive changes they've made are lack luster. Like the fast ball was a hit in every way so they got a chance to make a come back. BUT there quality control and Production seems bad still so they flubbed the great press they were finally getting . Them using 3cr 14mov and 7cr in most of there knives when they know 100% it's not what people want . And they DO know by now yet they keep there prices above or on par with companys now Using D2, 14C28n and even Cm 154 and Gerbers still being made in China . Seems like a insult to me . Hey buy inferior products to support the name Gerber an American company that will use inferiorer materials and shoddy workmanship but sell the stuff at higher prices. I'll be the first person on the Gerber train if like the fastball they start using atleast ok materials and keep the fit and finish to atleast passable from the knife review community with prices on par with other American companys. If they do that I'm in. I'd love to have my granddad's favorite knife company back if even just for nostalgia reasons.

Troy's EDC Solutions in the Bear Grylls days (made by Gerber/Fiskars) all their stuff was junk. Past few years their quality has stepped way up IMO. Find me a $37 full tang D2 knife.

Just got mine in the mail today and I like it. I think the sheath works fine but it's August. The tang is flush with the scales but I did have that little recurved bit in the cutting edge near the handle like your copy. Took a little coarse whetstone and it cleaned right up. I'm not looking for perfection for 32 bucks. What it seems to deliver is a nice casual-use outdoor living knife that will cut stuff just fine. It'll open a package of hot dogs and sharpen a marshmallow stick, clean a trout or slice a tomato. Obviously it can handle bushcrafty stuff, which is nice. If you want and need a knife with high-end steel, get out your wallet and buy one, who's stopping you? If I'm outside for a day or overnight it'll get done pretty much anything I need for the price of a bag of groceries. For the money it's a nice knife, end of story.

As a cheap ("value") christmas present, heck I wouldn't throw it away -sure. Throw it in a EDC bag and call it good (better then nothing). Buy it? Not likely. I could live with the strong retention.

Raised tang is no problem. Edges are rounded so it does not hurt anything. The grip is just fine. Stiff sheath retention is easily corrected by drilling the hole that ends the cut in the sheath a little larger. Or you could polish the detent in the blade spine to make it slide in and out the sheath retention clip easier. Still the sheath construction is the way that you push the retention tab not straight down but rather outwards from the knife handle.

The handle and the sheath with its possibility of stealth carry is priceless. Too bad it‘s badly produced. When the knife is put into the sheath it dulls the blade and you have the steel rolling over the edge. Bought another one to test, got the same problem. What i did was glueing some leather into the sheath to prevent the knife from getting dull. But I mean, come on guys, you cab do better

I have the large green one like you have in your video and I also have the smaller blue one. I've had them since the middle of the summer and I'm somewhat happy with them. They are not the best slicers and Carvers. After watching this video I looked at my large green one and checked the retention on it. I took the tip of the knife and found the raised spot inside of the sheath and scraped it back and forth a couple of times with the tip of the knife and it seemed to help loosen the retention.

Drill the hole at the bottom of the slot a little bigger to give you more flex on the thumb ramp.
