Hum. He’s right. Jamming along with this. On this particular groove it’s incredibly easy to catch the 19/16 (obviously it helps to be a musician or someone who can catch grooves better than normal people) But I’ve heard other variations of 19 that sound and feel insanely incomplete and weird. But the way this groove is played it really doesn’t feel much different than grooving to 9/8. Cause the syncopation almost makes it feel more natural. Can’t explain it or articulate it better. But I love it. This is a fun groove to jam on. I’ll have to use restraint to not rip it off (lol jk) but I really dig it. Makes me wanna explore other time signatures that are only a 16th note off from a 5/4 or 7/8 Groove and try to apply a similar principal with syncopation to make it sound groovy

Look up the MadRasana Unplugged Kanjira Quartet and the TM Krishna at Afghan Church videos. The quartet does something similar to what you're talking about, but it's 15.5 beats split up into a half-time 5 beat rhythm (so ten beats total), then a four beat single time rhythm, then a double time 3 beat rhythm (so 1.5 beats). The total turns into effectively a 15.5/16 or, more accurately, a 31/32 time signature. A 19/16 signature would likely be played as 6 in half time plus 3 in single time plus 8 in double time (12+3+4), or alternatively 10/6/3, or something even weirder, potentially - 14/5. That would give you rupak in half time (7 beat rhythm x 2), then jhaptaal in single time (5 beats). There are a million different ways to make it work. The Afghan Church video is even more complicated, and you can watch the video to understand it properly. And to make your brain explode even more, if you want, you can play something called a tihai, which is usually a section repeated three times to throw off the listener but one that actually fits within the confines of the underlying rhythm. And you can even layer tihais inside OTHER tihais. So coming back to the 19-beat rhythm: Let's say we want to end a piece with a 4 bar conclusion. That gives us 78 beats to work with. This is divisible by three. So now we have sections of 26 in which we can make a tihai. But to make things even crazier, we can layer a tihai INSIDE this 24 beat section itself and make it a tripalli (which is a single rhythmic line repeated three times at single speed, 1.5 times speed, and double speed). The way that works is you do an 10 beat rhythm with two silent beats at the end, which is 12 beats. When played back at 1.5 speed, it is 8 beats, and double speed is 6 beats (5 beats rhythm + 1 beat silence). 12+8+6 is 26. HOWEVER. You need the last beat of the very last double-time rhythm to land on the FIRST beat of the FIFTH (nonexistent) bar. Since there is one beat of silence at the end, you need to add two more full beats to the rhythm, which are put in between each of the sections of the tihai. So your structure now looks like this: [10+2\\6 2/3+4/3\\5+1] + 1 + [10+2\\6 2/3+4/3\\5+1] + 1 + [10+2\\6 2/3+4/3\\4] | 1. And the very LAST beat of the last rhythm is the FIRST beat of the next bar, which doesn't exist. It's very trippy, and I'm not sure I did the best job explaining it. And I've been playing tabla for 25 years. Lol. EDIT: 76, not 78. Dammit lol. But if the beat was 19.5/16 (or 39/32), it would work. My point is, nested rhythms are a big deal in Indian percussion.

This time signature by Zappa in 19/16 "Keep it Greasy" (solo section) used to make my head hurt. But I find it easier to count in in 5/8 in a slower tempo rather than high Octane 16th notes and its easier to flow with it and solo around the groove.

Oh though, this reimagining of the groove by this guy is awesome and I love it lots! I'm only testing my view with regard to the motivation to construct a drum part that is a common time beat with a tag at the end instead of exploring the potential beat and groove within the bass part as written by Zappa. It's a question and not a complaint. For me I believe the beat is settled on because the back beat of the four gives a more settled grounding for the listener but I still wonder what the justification is when the bass part is not of that grouping and the drummers drumming over the riff never ever address the disparity between the consideration of one part over the other. A satisfying explaination for me would be:I wrote my drum part over the bass grouping because I felt the music needed a settled back beat. An unsatisfying one is: I could group the number 19 this way and so I did so irrespective of the bass part and it's alternative groupings. I can in theory play four over all music even if over odd meter stuff knowing the resolve eventually happens but I don't do this! And that's because it's the best rhythm that suits the song that presupposes what I ought do over the tune no matter what maths I could arbitrate to form a beat . I can though no matter what explain why I did the part I ended up doing without sounding like I found a life hack of 4 plus whatever else. The coliauta beat does work somehow but it wasn't t in my opinion what was best for that groove. Again, a purpose written drum groove adhering to the groupings of the base line would have been surperior in my view

I would be more concerned about the fact that someone thinks it's a good idea to celebrate a song about fucking groupies in the ass. Say what you will about Zappa and his musical genius, his views on women were regressive.

Although that said , I love this guy's groove and drumming. My former comment is more about the conventional view many take when approaching odd meters and their philosophy behind their parts. I think the melody is king when dealing with odd meters and not how one can play straight time over the odd meter part with a tagged resolve at the end of the groove. A great drummer to study for odd meter drum part is Virgil donati who I believe had taken great influence from Coliauta but has gone a step further in tailoring his parts to the melody of the piece over a numerical subdivision method that early Coliauta kind of exhibited to survive those Zappa records. See for example Coliauta playing on stings seven days some years later, a far more sophisticated tracking of his drum parts compared to his Zappa beats despite Zappa's times being far more difficult than the sting ones of later Coliauta career. On ten summoners tales Coliauta really illustrates his rhythmic prowess over seemingly simple odd meter tunes

To add a critical view to the chat here but only out of devils advocate is that: he plays his , and rather cool nonetheless, interpretation of the original coliauta groove which itself I think was a little superimposed over the unique Zappa composition. To back up this claim I present my break down. The original coliauta groove was a 4/4 beat with a three sixteenth note "tag" at the end to help resolve back onto the one with the odd meter looped groove. But when listening to Zappa's composed bass groove part, the biggest feature I believe within this keep it greasy groove, the bass part can be broken up into two 7s (with bass hits accented on the three of those 7s) followed by a 5 with accents falling on the first and third beats of that five. This written bass part then by virtue of Zappa's compositional consideration has a more cyclical flow which the original nor demonstrated contemporary drum part (within this video)does not correspond musically (or at least rhythmically) with the bass line the beat is superimposed over. I'm not a talented drummer like this guy but life allows me to feel the better beat would have followed or been written to the bass part as composed by Zappa meaning a groove matching the true groupings of Keep it greasy's base composition. The melody is a grouping of 7+7+5 with accents on the three of each 7 and accents on the one and three of the final 5. The compositional logic is then clearly exposed as Zappa highlighted the three of each grouping as a melodic motif. Something the drummers could have helped illuminate further in their own interpretation instead of resolving with a tagged rhythm at the end of a standard beat. Any thoughts?
