To sum it up: Germany: High standard engineered vehicles + best drivers in the world + good infrastructure = Awesome roads with unlimited speed and good drivers. No Sir, since I unfortunately never been to the US, I can only tell you about the Autobahn. Most of the time there's a speed limit and if not, then is always a small car in front of you, blocking the left lane and since it's prohibited to overtake on the right lane, you have to wait until it's gone, or you have to break the law. If there isn't a small car, then there is a 30 years old Mercedes with a driver at least 3 times as old as the car (typically we call these guys "Man with hat", because they're mostly wearing a hat while driving). If there's no man with hat, then is there a truck overtaking another truck, but due to the speed limiter which is installed in every truck in Germany, you have to wait forever.

I am driving the Autobahn every day (100km 1 way) to get work (for 3 years now). I totally disagree with everything you said. Perhaps once in a week i have a truck or slow driver on the left lane blocking the way. I also have nearly no speed limit on my way. I can drive as fast as i want and i rarely get distracted. Only when the Autobahn is full, i have to drive 120 - 140 km/h to not get in danger when another driver suddenly switches to the left lane. I love the Autobahn and to be honest: Everytime I am in another country i find the slow speed extremely exhausting. I have to stop every 2 hours to not get to sleepy.
@EnjoyFirefighting

guys, guys, let's calm down.... it always depends on where in the country you specificly are. As for Germany: aAlthough there are many parts especially in metropolitan areas which have some more speed limits, there are also those highways which hardly have any speed limit on a several hour long drive. Some highways have traffic jams every day, while others are completly empty most of the time and you can actually drive as fast as you can.

@@LynnCDoyle-ek2oh trips that are longer than 160/200/260km (depending on the vehicle and the restrictions regarding the vehicle). 140/160/180/200km->most trucks have a permanent max speed limit even if signs on the street say that higher is permitted. This varies based on vehicle size/form etc., type of load and some other stuff. Most common examples: 70km/h, 80km/h, 90km/h, 100km/h. Busses using the Autobahn have similar restrictions depending on one question: are all passengers seated or do some have to stand for most of the ride. (I'm not sure though about what the exact limits in both cases are) 260km->130km/h is not a speed limit (unless a sign says otherwise) but it is the recommended driving speed. Although there are a lot of people who just ignore it...which is perfectly legal...as long as there are no signs saying otherwise. Sorry for the long answer.

Yeah, I found that funny as well. Germany has a lot of laws, but many tend to be there to protect your freedom. I have several friends who did student exchange years in the USA and they said that they were surprised how restrictive it was in America, compared to Germany - they couldn't smoke, drink or have sex in America, but all were legal for them in Germany. One friend's guest family lived near Beverly Hills. He wasn't allowed to smoke in the house, so he decided to go for a walk and was stopped by the police for WALKING! WTF! They told him it was illegal to walk in that area! They then said, that he should walk in the woods. A couple of nights later, a mounted cop came upon him in the woods and said, "ah, you must be the German exhange student!"

I'd spent several vacations in the USA and I am a supporter of the speed limit since then. Driving there was definitely more relaxing compared to german Autobahn. Some rules look weird to us for sure, such as "hold your lane" or (my favorite) the "first come - first go" rule on "unregulated" intersections. (This definitely would NOT work in germany, because the americans are much more defensive in driving than germans.) It is confusing (to us germans) that there could be a car right or left of you for several hundred miles because we are familliar with "use the right lane" and left lane use for passing only. Well, I like driving in the USA more than here but thats my personal opinion based on my experience of (several month) driving in the USA.

I've lived in the US for a while as a Dutchman. First of all, it is piss poor easy to get your License in the US. In some places, you can even do your practical exam on a closed parcour. I know so, because i had to get my DL in Florida because i stayed there for a while. In Europe you learn to anticipate and look forward, most US drivers only look on what is 2 meters in front of their car, not a single meter further. In the US you barely have to deal with pedestrians and people on bicycles, so they don't know how to handle those. In Europe, it is full with pedestrians and bikers, so they know how to handle those. They have to, otherwise they will end up in an accident every 5 minutes. Under the name of 'Freedom', people in the US are allowed to drive totally beat-up cars on the interstate. Some of these cars were very poorly maintained, about to just break out of nowhere. The German standards on what is allowed is waay higher. This is the same reason why brands such as Mercedes, Audi and BMW overengineer the shit out of the cars. The Germans expect the cars to function and be able to drive hours on end @ 250km per hour. The US roads are worse maintained, more potholes and stuff. The US roads are bigger tho, with more space.

@ MercedesBenxx It depends on the city you are in.. Over here in Los Angeles, where the weather is nice for most of the year, you have a ton of people on foot and bicycle near the beaches. Unfortunately, many of them are morons, and they just jump into the street right in front of a car if they are at a red light. In San Francisco, you have a lot of dipshit hippie people who just jump in the street and NOTHING can prepare you for it because you have trolley cars with metal tracks that criss-cross throughout the steep streets. One year I had a Jeep in front of me and the light turned green and one of these fucking hippies jumped into the intersection (not even a crosswalk) and the Jeep stopped in time. I hit my brakes as I should, but my front tires were over the metal trolley-car tracks, and we were in the middle of a really big storm with the street soaking wet, and I slid into the Jeep and knocked his trailer hitch off.. I was in a very nice car, that was fixed up on top of it all with $400 a piece Michelin Pilots and I actually had aftermarket Brembo brakes custom installed which cost $3000 for the fronts alone. Nothing can prepare you for the morons over here who have no value over anyone else's safety. I got out of the car, and wanted to chase after the bastard who jumped into the street, and he ran off.. Probably better anyway, because my size 15 would have been really far up his ass, and I would have been sitting in a jail cell for it. Ill take the autobahn any day over the US highways... More deaths by far over here.. more dangerous because of all the morons, and like you said, the shitty cars that are falling apart in some of the states that do not do inspections.

driving on the German Autobahn is a pleasurable experience. Drivers are considerate, let you in if you need to switch lanes, and all tend to follow the rules well. actually the trucks on the Autobahn are pretty predictable. Mostly the drive about 90km/h and this for the whole time they're on the road. The cars on the left lanes are much more unpredictable than the trucks. Especially if it comes to driving with a trailer, staying behind a truck is by far the best you can do since it's much less stressfull and saves you a lot of fuel.

I cannot imagine driving 70 mph for hours. I would fall asleep. I mean, when I drive 120km/h (which is 75 mph) on the autobahn it's sometimes hard to stay awake for several hours, or not getting distracted because it's so boring. I prefer 160 to 200 km/h (100 to 125 mph) for cruising speed because I'm more awake and focused on driving and the traffic. But of course it depends on the traffic density and local speed limits. It's not clever to go 200 or so in a 3 lane with the right lane full of trucks and the middle lane with cars... you can bet on someone changing to the left lane when you're approaching with high speed. For me going above 160 km/h for 6 or more hours straight is not exhausting at all. Maybe because I do this since I got my drivers licence, so 13 years now.

I usually drive 120-180 km/h in Germany and do fine with that in middle/fast lane. Last year I went for a road trip in the US and was bothered that the slow speeds might tire me real quick since I get tired in Germany when under 140 km/h for to long. Surprsingly I didn't get tired on the US highway at all. Might be the big car or the fact that you don't need to focus on the small and few lanes. Or maybe you just feel more comfortable when there's no stress between slow and fast drivers and no having to check your rearview mirror every 3-10 seconds.

In summary: German Autobahns are of beter quality, with better drivers in better cars. US Highways are of lower quality concrete, have drivers on them who got their license by knowing which end of the car should be pointing forwards. Thankfully that doesn't matter much since you're only allowed to go slightly faster than a running horse. So yeah, if you're used to highways I can imagine that the Autobahn is stressful. ;-) Driving on the Autobahn isn't rocket science. There are really only three things to remember: 1. Always move to the rightmost lane that suits your speed, no hogging the left lane while crawling along. 2. Don't overtake on the right. This is actually illegal in most of Europe. 3. No matter how fast you're going, there's always someone faster than you. So check your mirrors for traffic behind you, it's what they're there for. Follow these rules and you can probably drive in Germany and live to tell the tale.

Driving in the USA and Canada drives me insane, people are just too slow to make decisions and they drive extremely erratically. The lanes just don't mean anything and some drivers (due to frustration) swerve in and out of different lanes to pass the cars that don't get out of the way, making it extremely dangerous. Driving in Germany on the other hand is pure bliss (and everywhere in Europe for that matter). Sure there are bad drivers like everywhere else, but most of the time everything is perfect.

There is none of this, if you're over a certain age, you can go straight to written then driving test. I think I had at least 30 hours in the classroom and like nearly 15 hours behind the wheel. I needed less than most as due to my experience, I accomplished the required task quickly. If you're not picking it up, your driving instructor can require to take more lessons. You have to practice city, country, Autobahn as well as night driving. The test was 45 minutes of driving everything. My instructor in the passenger seat and the guy keeping score in the back. Leisurely driving tends to make you not react quickly, where as on the autobahn you have to be prepared and pay attention. Driving at the US average of 120kmh is very boring, so you look around at the beautiful landscape, at the rivers, lakes, houses, monuments - everything you drive past. I dont want to offend any american here but whats the point of buying a fast car in the US ? I know that u can use it on a racetrack, but i couldnt buy a 300-600hp car for using it once or twice in a month on a racetrack. I guess that driving 60-75mph would make me nothing but tired because you dont have to focus and you do the same thing for hours.

I've never driven in Germany but from what I've seen the biggest advantage to the Autobahn is that the people driving on it know how to maintain lane discipline. The Germans (rightly) won't tolerate some self righteous idiot parking himself in the left lane and messing up the smooth flow of traffic.

Jeff DeWitt I agree with you wholeheartedly. Germans have better lane discipline and generally follow the many rules of the road. But to be fair, I feel like Americans (generally) don't like someone driving like a complete idiot just as much as Germans, it's just that having and dealing with bad drivers is kinda the price we pay for liberal laws and easy to obtain licenses. After all, America was built on the car and sees driving as more of a right as opposed to the Germans who might see driving as more of a privilege. Also, this is why we have low-speed limits; many drivers aren't terribly skilled and so are a risk to others if the speed limits are raised or lifted. Personally, I think this should be changed and it should be harder to obtain a license, but I can understand why local governments set low speed limits and why people outside the U.S. see this as lazy or something. These are just my thoughts, tell me what you think.

3000 euros and 6 months, .. who was that, a blind lady with only one foot in a manual car? A "intensive course", which is literally two weeks, costs around 2000 euros. And that's already considerably more expensive than just getting the license the normal way. Which btw has 12 mandatory theory classes, and around 12 mandatory driving lessons. That's it. You decide how long you need for that. Sidenote: that "preferring A or B" comes down to what you're used to. I'm german, and american highways would drive me nuts, not "relax me". The Autobahn is plenty relaxing, but you find it "stressful" because you're not used to high speeds. Something that is an everyday experience on the Autobahn.

Hahaha, driving in Germany is stressful and you have to take a break every 2 hrs while you can drive 500 miles in the US without being tired... What a BS. It is recommended in Germany to take a break after 2 hrs of driving because of fatique. Also German roads are not straight lines for many miles (of course kilometers in Europe ;) ) while in the US it is endless straight roads that get you sleepy... The Autobahn isn't straight all the time which is also done to make sure that you keep yourself focused on driving and not fall asleep. From my experience of driving in Europe, UK and USA I'd say that the German Autobahn is the best experience while UK had the best road signs.

To me the main difference in the german vs the us roads is attitude. The americans are notoriously arrogant about just about everything but above all, the way they drive. Their attitude is, I HAVE A RIGHT. They exercise their right to dilly dally at any speed in any fucking lane and at least in NC, most highways do not have a minimum speed. That means that the idiots are allowed to drive as slow as they want and it is not unusual to have several cars driving at the same speed, side by side rather than moving into the same lane and leaving one lane open for passing. They also do NOT know that the left lane is a PASSING lane, not a dilly dally lane. They refuse to move over no matter how much you flash your lights at them. Again, they have a right! In Germany, if you're driving too slow in a left lane, chances are a cop will fuck you over and in germany, no matter how fast you are going, someone is always going to pass you so people tend to move over, regardless if they're flying a learjet on the autobahn. Discipline is the key., THere would be NO need for 8 lanes in the US if people learned the simple rule. Slow in the right lane, faster in the middle lane and fast in the left lane. If every asshole stuck to the correct speed and stayed in the correct lane, there would be no congestions and no need for crazy maneuvers. In 1986, I rode my very fast bike in England. One and only ONE quick flash with my lights and whoever was in front of me, immediately moved one lane to the right. Try this shit in the US and see how far that gets ya.

the difference is that most Germans follow every dumbass law in existence. Even though we have stupid laws, the average American could give a fuck about them. I've lived in Germany for 15 years and my average autobahn speed is usually slower than my average US highway speed. Why? Because in the US there is ROOM and no one gives a fuck about the speed limit. In Germany, they can't figure out an autobahn that is more than 2 lanes; so when there is a speed zone or construction (which is too many), there is no where to go but be stuck behind the 90 year old Hitler in his shitty Mercedes.

As an American living in Germany, hands down I prefer the Autobahn. First off, despite the higher speeds, laws on driving on the Autobahn are much stricter. It's illegal to hang in the left or even middle lane (although many are doing this now but I just saw on TV that the police are starting to crack down) if your not passing or in congestion. It is illegal to pass on the right. Tailgating at high speeds can result in you walking for 1 month. The only thing the US has is lack of congestion when your a long way from major cities such as open Arizona or Wyoming highway.
@OldLordSpeedy

The goverment law say: "Drive at the rightest lane. If you are faster do you can pass the car or truck in front of you at the next left lane." For my driver's license I paid something like 60€ total (theoric and real driving exam). 15 € for theory and about 40 for the real drive test. Belgium is very good on that tbh, but their exigences are extremely high. However, most drivers know how to drive here. I learned to drive with my dad (it's legal), so no driving school needed. It's not mandatory in belgium (in case you are wondering, it costs 1200 € for 20 hours of school driving).

It really depends on the town and city you live in and the amount of competition between the driving schools there. I paid 1600€ and I didn't take a lot of lessons. In a neighbouring town, the same amount of lessons would've cost me 1800€ and in the closest city it would've been about 1100€. But you still have to stay inside your parish when you do your license or have a really good explanation. Thanks laws.

Simon H. It's over rated I live in America and took 2 trips to Germany. the roads are falling apart literally huge potholes cracked surfaces. I drove from Munich to Stutgart and if I was doing the average 65mph it would have taken twice as long!! Take it from me stay in Germany and enjoy perfect drivers who don't play on their phones or eat a meal on the go!

I've never driven on the Autobahn myself, but American highways are very stressful to me. The stress of doing ninety five on a long stretch of desert road that runs for countless miles before you even see any sign of civilization, all the while watching for that lone sheriff that's just itching to give you a ticket, is stressful. That and the people passing on the right, like others have remarked about.

If you are stressing out about going 10 to 30 miles an hour over the speed limit then the easy fix is SLOW DOWN.

You have to consider that some cars dont have the power to accelerate at the rate that you car might be able to... There so many idiots who think that the small 80hp car is playing bs with them because it doesnt take over i an split second...

I was stationed in München and I have to give it to the autobahn. Drove from München to Wien in just over 4 hours with a stop for fuel and lunch - would have taken over 6 in the US.

most people in Germany drive with 100 - 150 km/h and even when it's not forbidden to drive 300 km/h you'll most likely see many people be angry because of it. And you can start doing your driving license with 16, so that when you are 17 you can start driving, and yes it's allowed even though only if your parents are with you I think.
@CaptainRum

There arent many people that are angry because of it, atleast from what I saw. The Problem is we actually have a rule that when you dont pass another car you have to be in the middle lane, but still some people tend to drive in the left lane with around 130 kmh and thats pretty annoying if you are going maybe 200 and cant pass him

German autobahn is so well engineered and relaxed to drive. Germans are really good and safe drivers. They are patient and they won't show the finger if you need up..

Vignesh N Except when Germans drive abroad. I live close to the German border and I see a lot of Germans going 120 km/h on the left lane without changing for a couple kilometres. Also sometimes on intersections they just go all the way from left to right, just ignoring the other traffic because they need to take an exit.

If you are used to the Autobahn (like me) it's not a problem to drive more then 5 hours in a row. But for that you need to find the right driving technique for yourself. I usually drive very fast on the left lane. The good thing about that is, that you don't need to watch out for faster cars wich could pass you, but you have to break very often because there are many drivers who hold a speed of 150km/h on the left lane wich is very dangerous and annoying...
