Oscar by my very modest military history aficionado standard by far the best core in the whole war. Id go so far with that statement. The battle of carentan in band of brothers is utter ridiculous fiction. And after reading some of their ‘bio’s’ they weren’t fanatically indoctrinated like other German units. My great uncle should have got a Knight's Cross at Monte Cassino. He captured the road to Rome as commander of the Perths of the first Canadian infantry division. US general Mark Clark was so jealous that he told the Americans to get onto the newly safe road and capture Rome. He said he would shoot at any British troops he found there. I suppose the British may have caught up with the Canadians by then. In doing so he had to abandon his pursuit of the German army retreating through the Peleponese. The head of that German army was General Wietinghoff who designed the Bundeswehr later on. Brigadier John Skiffinton Heming Lind probably saved his life and that of a lot of other Germans, and should have a Knight's Cross to go with his DSO

According to Alan Whicker, he would have. Alan Whicker also took into custody the box of valuables from some SS mob whom the partisans had cornered in Italy in return for the German troops' safe conduct. The valuables he then gave to a US armoured column never to be seen again. He should have kept them and done something constructive with them.

It's interesting to hear some of the thoughts of these German soldiers and what they experienced at Monte Cassino. I often wonder what the Germans do and what they think of the English when we pay tribute to our war dead on 11th November each year, they must surely pay tribute to their lost soldiers too, in the same way,...? at the same time and date,...? It's so sad to think of these things. My uncle was killed in this battle. I'm named after Private James Douglass 4468455 of the Durham Light Infantry, he was killed on the 23 November 1944, he was 22 years old, some would say a young man,... I'd say still a boy as that's what I was when I was aged 22 yrs. He's buried in Meldola War Cemetery which is near Rimini on the north coast of Italy. I've never visited Italy but I imagine Cassino after its rebuild must look like a new Town or City, and the rebuilt Monastery in all its glory,... Italy must be proud.

HELLO JAMES D ... Thanks for the information on yer UNCLE PVT J DOUGLAS very interesting info indeed YOU are NOT a boy at 22 yrs LOL I was exactly that age standing on SAN CARLOS bay watching HMS Plymouth just having been air strike hit!!!! by an FAA Mirage 3 (a follow up air raid from earlier that day 6 BDE GRUPPO :grp FAA the Argentinean air force ) and had 2 ULSTER tours of duty previous to that date /service !! The DLI had a BN in every theatre of ww2 and saw majority of action !! MY ex wife's Father was DLI (a regular soldier before ww2 in fact his FATHER was dying of cholera in bedrm !! BOER war svc as he was born in another rm!! ) I was very fortunate to be able to get an invite to join DLI association for the 65 th D DAY Anniversary trip : NORMANDY etc .....and getting to know 6 DLI VETERANS such as MR.KEN LODGE etc (6 DLI I believe wore distinct BLACK DLI cap badge !!) IT was a great trip and my knowledge (little ASHAMED state then ) was greatly expanded indeed !! We had an inter tour guide /historian who was gd enough to write bk to me and give some info on DLI REGIMENTAL history bks one of which I purchased up in N'CASTLE ! I am residing in DURHAM area myself an HMF veteran my Service included 1LI and 7LI TA RECCE for some years THANKS for your input ...have you thought of contacting the DLI association ??!! NOW I'm in semi retirement I'm hoping to get bk in touch with some people !! CHEERS !

@@russellmay7347 .....thanks Russell, I live is Sunderland. I don't really come from a military family apart from my uncle who I wrote about earlier and my younger brother who joined the Parachute Rgt in 1977 at age 17. He was unfortunate enough to have an accident in training down in Aldershot, slipped on a wet steel climbing frame at 6am one morning and broke 4 vertebrae in his back,....that was the end of the Para's for him with a military discharge. He was offered a transfer to another regiment but declined as for him it was the Para's or nothing. I may well contact the DLI as I have my uncles medals and don't have anyone to pass them onto as I don't have kids. They are in a small box from the MOD with the letter expressing the sympathy that he wasn't alive to receive them personally. I may be mistaken but the DLI used to have a small museum located in Richmond, N. Yorkshire, or it could have been another regiment. Anyhow it's been nice chatting and lets hope we all get back to normality soon. James.🇬🇧😉

Ok soz I missed your reply !!! I've been getting a lot of very pos comments recently ref to a MODELLERS site ! ITS a nightmare for any young troopie to be injured during trng and in a particularly HARSH way I had worked with some PARA /AIRBORNE Lad's over the years including an ULSTER tour with 2 SQN RAF Regt in 1981 (I was briefly on the SQN as NON para qualified !!) And I've worked with a no. Of EX PARAS during 28 yrs in UK security ! Many boyhood memories of watching PARA ptls on OPS in BELFAST !! A lot of comments and attitudes towards which many stupid comments HAVE been made ....F you've never been on a patrol on Active service !!?? Then you've never lived !! are extremely lucky etc IT (Military service is not for everyone !! BUT never take away from those who have served !!) I consider myself very fortunate period and know many who have not been so !! THE RICHMOND N.YORKS museum (you mentioned ) is /was GREEN HOWARDS (a Regt that saw some heavy active service in N.IRELAND and I had opportunity to work with them over there in 1979 ! ) Had a gut feeling you hailed from N.EAST area I settled in N.EAST in 1988 and have never been happier TBT ! FINE genuine people and I've never considered living anywhere else ! MY options to RTN to NATIVE ULSTER now very limited!! MY medals get the usual 11th month Period of DAYLIGHT !! Luckily 2 years in a row of crse NOT this year BUT I look fwd to being able to do so more parades etc as I'm semi retirement !!! And YEAH I have same NIL next of kin etc ( well a niece and nephew but it's not happening LOL ) well worth considering having those medals INSURED !!! And please be aware there are many dodgy dealers on the militaria scene SO be particularly cautious in that area!!! REGARDS to you and I hope your brother moved onto something else after his accident/injury. YEAH do contact DLI association I'm sure you are aware of the DLI museum fiasco etc CHEERS good luck!

I commend the bravery and tenacity of these German soldiers yet I have to wonder would they have fought so hard if they knew what atrocities were committed. I also wonder how they could not know since not all these acts were done in a concentration camp and were done in the field against a mostly civilian population. You must realize that soldiers talk some to brag others in condemnation so it's hard to believe that they were totally ignorant. Also they all witnessed the treatment of the Jews not just in occupied nation's but their own country as well.
