Nicknamed Stuka, it was the main German ground attack plane during the early phases of WWII. Designed in 1935 and build between 1937 and 1944, around 6,000 were made. While a successful design in the early stages of the war, it later became outdated, and wasn’t used as a dive bomber after 1943. 00:38 “Battle of Flanders” usually only refers to five battles in WW1, but during WWII, it was also used by the Germans to describe fighting in the Flanders region in Belgium in 1940. 00:44 This is a Dornier Do-17, a light bomber. Designed in the early 1930s, and produced from August 1936 to October 1940, it was designed as a fast bomber, with a top speed of 410 kmh, making it quicker than most fighter planes of its time. However, this focus on speed meant that its bombing and defensive capacities were severely limited, and it was pulled from active frontline service in late 1941. 2,139 machines built. 00:48 These planes are early variants of the Heinkel He-111. The He-111 was introduced in 1935 and used as a medium bomber throughout the war. While initially a decent plane, by the end of the 1930s it was technically obsolete with weak armor, weak defense weapons and low bomb capacity. Nevertheless, it was Germanys standard bomber during WWII; 6,508 were built until September 1944. 03:07 Fourt Louis was a French fort south of Dunkirk. The first fort at that site was built in 1657; in subsequent wars, the fort was destroyed and re-build several times, the last time in 1783. It was transformed into a military prison in the 18th century and used as a prison until 1889. The French military then used it mainly for storage, and during the Battle of Dunkirk, it was largely destroyed by German air attacks. 04:23 The Germans heavily bombed the port and the ships in Dunkirk during the evacuation; at the end of the battle, around 90% of the city was destroyed, much of it due to the heavy bombing raids. 05:56 These guns are 8,8cm FlaK 36 AA/AT guns. At Dunkirk, some of these guns were used as artillery to fire at Allied ships. 06:36 German fast attack boats (Schnellboote) destroyed numerous Allied ships at Dunkirk. Their biggest success was the sinking of the British destroyer HMS Wakeful on May 29th, sunk by S 30 of the 2nd Schnellboot flotilla, and the sinking of the French destroyer Scirocco on May 31st, sunk by S 23 and S 26 of the same flotilla. 07:40 This is a 2cm FlaK 30, the standard light AA-gun of the Germans during WWII. 08:17 This plane is most likely a Westland Lysander. Initially built as an army cooperation aircraft, introduced in June 1938, it was used mainly for reconnaissance and light bombing during the Battle of France, five squadrons equipped with Lysanders were sent to France. In total, 1,786 planes were made in 1938 in 1939. In France, out of the 175 Lysanders used by the British, 118 were lost in May and June 1940. 08:31 This is a 3,7cm PaK 36 light AT-gun. 08:36 This is an early variant of the Hawker Hurricane fighter plane. Introduced in December 1937, the Hurricane was one of the two standard fighter planes of the British RAF, the other one being the Spitfire. 14,487 were built until 1944 in Britain and Canada. During the Battle of France, ten squadrons of Hurricanes were used by the RAF, and during the period of May 10th to May 25th, they destroyed 299 German planes and further damaged 65. During the evacuation from Dunkirk, 14 Hurricane squadrons were involved, and they claimed 108 German planes shot down. In total, the British lost around 386 Hurricanes in France, but the vast majority, 350, were destroyed on the ground or left behind during the evacuation. 09:02 This is the L’Adroit, a French destroyer. It was the leading ship of the L’Adroit class of destroyers built in the 1920s for the French Navy. Construction started in April 1925, and it was commissioned in October 1929. It had 1,380 tons of displacement and was armed with four single 130mm guns, as well as two triple torpedo tubes and depth charge throwers. It was heavily damaged during a German bombing attack on May 21st, but the captain managed to beach the ship. While beached, the ship later suffered an explosion that created the big hole between the bridge and the bow, as can be seen here. 09:24 These vehicles are Sd. Kfz. 222, a light scout car produced for the Wehrmacht between 1935 and June 1943. Armed with a 2cm autocannon and equipped with a 90hp engine, it was quick and powerful enough to fight against enemy infantry and light vehicles. 990 vehicles were made. 09:27 In this shot, the 2cm autocannon and the MG-34 secondary armament can be clearly seen. 09:36 This machine gun is a WWI-era MG 08/15. It was a Maxim-style MG, and around 130,000 were built. While it was outdated, it was still used by some German troops during the early stages of WWII, but was usually given to rear line units. 10:37 During the retreat and evacuation from Dunkirk, the Allied troops had to leave behind their entire equipment. This included around 2,500 artillery guns, 20,000 motorcycles, 65,000 trucks and cars,75,000 tons of ammunition and 162,000 tons of fuel. 10:43 These are Renault UE Chenillette. The Renault UE was a light tracked prime mover, developed by Renault in the early 30s, and 5,168 were built between 1932 and March 1941. 11:29 Around 90% of the city were destroyed due to heavy bombing raids, but also fighting itself. 12:04 These vehicles are Panhard 178, a French reconnaissance armored car produced between February 1937 and April 1940. It had a 25mm main gun; 729 vehicles were built, with a further 414 B-versions built after WWII. Many of these were later captured and used by the Germans, who used them mainly for anti-partisan operations and guard duties behind the frontlines. 12:15 These rifles are MAS-36, the French main service rifle during WWII, introduced in 1936. 12:18 These are Bren Universal Carrier, a small, armored personnel or weapon carrier produced by Britain from the early 1930s onwards. Around 113,000 were made, making it the most produced British armored vehicle of WWII. 13:02 While the Germans did manage to sink 243 ships of all different kinds and sizes, this was still only a small portion, as the Allies used 861 larger ships, and also around 800 small boats during the evacuation. 13:28 This is again a 3,7cm PaK 36 AT-gun. 13:30 These AA-guns are 40mm Bofors L/60. Developed by Swedish company Bofors in 1930, it was adopted by the British in 1939 and became the standard light AA-gun of the British. By the end of WWII, over 19,000 guns were made in British, Canadian and Australian factories. 14:20 The retreat was sometimes a bit chaotic, but in general the British troops evacuated in a calm and orderly fashion. 14:47 These guns are Canon de 155mm GPF, a French gun designed in 1917 and used in large numbers by both the French and Americans, in WWI and to a lesser extent in WWII. During the fighting in May and June 1940, the French still had around 450 of these guns in service. 15:08 Havas is a French advertising company, which was founded in 1835 as a news agency. 15:15 Generally, the British viewed Dunkirk more as a victory, because they were able to save so many men, while the Germans viewed it as a great loss for the Allies, because they lost so much material and the British Expeditionary Forces basically ceased to exist. 16:04 These small tanks are Vickers Mk VI light tanks. The sixth edition of the Vickers light tank, it was introduced in 1936 and built until 1940, with 1,682 tanks built. It was a very small tank, only 4.0 meters long and armed with one .50 Vickers MG as main gun and one .303 Vickers MG as a secondary weapon. Most of the tanks of the British Expeditionary Force in France were Vickers Mk VI; the British lost 331 tanks, several of them were captured and further used by the Germans. 16:56 This is probably referring to the Earl of Derby, a title in the Peerage of England, which at that time was held by Edward Stanley, the 17th Earl of Derby (1865-1948). 17:01 I couldn’t find any source for this alleged quote.

An additional remark could be made if you find it worth it. 1:58 This bomber formation appears to consist entirely of Junkers Ju 86 bombers, more precisely the A or D variants equipped with diesel-powered Junkers Jumo 205 engines. Introduced in 1936, the Junkers Ju 86 saw action during Spanish Civil War alongside the Heinkel He 111 before being withdrawn from combat duty after its inferior performance in comparison to the latter became apparent. The production of this aircraft ended already in 1939, after some 900 manufactured aircraft of which 171 were exported to various countries ranging from Sweden to the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. It is apparent that the footage of the bomber formation is from before the war as the A and D variants of the bomber had been withdrawn entirely from service in 1939 and the radial-engined Ju 86G variants had been relegated to training units.

I wonder why they used footage of a pre war "long nose" He 111E at 1:39. That version definitely wasn't in frontline service in 1940. And at 1:59 these planes are even Ju-86s. It is a weird mix of actual spectacular footage from raids on Dunkirk and stock footage. At 2:30 it is definitely Dunkirk if you compare Google Maps pics with it. The layout of the harbor hasn't changed much

The actual combat footage was usually filmed with a nose-camera, so just a camera stuck to the plane that would film automatically. Many of the formation footage was filmed by an actual cameraman sitting inside the plan- relativley dangerous to do in an active combat zone, so they would usually just pick exercise or training footage for that.

I read in "Militär und Geschichte" (a German periodic) that Germans were reluctant to conduct a full-scale assault on Dunkirk due to their experiences recevied during the battle of Arras, where the allies launched a surprusing and quite effective attack against advanicg 7 th Pz. Div. The OKH was simply aware that they had tens of thousands armed men vis-a-vis, and those men would have fought to the last bullet. It was more convenient to let the Luftwaffe do the job. In the result the majority of the British managed to evacuate.

Agreed. France still had substantial forces south of the encirclement and Paris had not fallen yet, the assessment was wiping out the troops at Dunkirk would be too costly. The British (and French) left behind all their equipment (even rifles) at Dunkirk. Germany had no real plans to follow up with an invasion of England. They hoped that the disarmed and demoralized soldiers would bring defeatism and a desire to end the war back with them. Of course, it didn't work out that way.

The truth was that Goering begged Hitler to allow his Luftwaffe to destroy the Allied armies, hence the slowing down of the Wehrmacht advance.

Its crazy to see this footage, i have sailed into dunkirk harbor a few days ago and the harbor looks exactly the same still. In this video you can see bombs hitting exactly where i was. All the wrecks are still there, some can be seen when the tide is low and the approach is quite dangerous outside the waterway because of this

“We must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations.” Winston Churchill. There was also chalked on a British newsstand, "France surrenders, we are in the finals." How many nations would have continued to fight after such a defeat?

How is it propaganda to show actual battle footage?
@GermanWWIIArchive
Ай бұрын
First of all, a lot of the footage is actually not from Dunkirk, it's pre-war exercise or training footage. Second of all, even if all of the footage were genuine, it would still be propaganda. Propaganda has nothing to do with what is being shown, but rather how it's being shown. This is not a neutral newsreel, it's made by the Nazis to make themselves look good and obviously doesn't mention anything that would make them look bad, such as the fact that this entire campaign was a war of aggression, or that the German Army committed multiple war crimes during the invasion of France. I would strongly suggest you read about the definition of propaganda before writing such stupid comments.

@SiegfriedDerDrachentoter Exactly if the Germans wanted to invade they would have to take controll of the channel but because the British Navy was so strong that Kriesgmarine was nothing compared to it together with bad logistics, not enough ships for landing operations, no air superiority, no experience with landing operations the invasion would result in total disaster as it did when Brits did a wargame of operation sea lion in 1974 and even when the german side had advantages it was still a complete disaster.
