My dream dog One day.
@PygmalionFaciebat
4 ай бұрын
@@trawlins396 But he is more work than most of the dogs of his size. Because he has that double fur, which he changes 1-2times every year - meaning he needs to be brushed quiet often. Besides the usual stuff. Other than that, he is cool to have around. But he also needs at least 2 hours of activity every day - he is not a couch potatoe. Thats why he is a sheperd - those dogs were breeded to be sheperds of sheeps - they really do a lot of running. Also its important before you get one - look at his papers about his hip bones. Most of german sheperds suffered that much inbreed in the last 100 years, that his hip bones are mostly disfigured which can cause trouble even at an early age of 5. Usually, the more his back goes down when he stands, the higher his hips are disfigured. So if you look at those things - and if you are ok with doing lots of activity (2 hours a day) - he can be a very cool and funny friend. Speaking from experience. I had 3 in my lifetime.
@trawlins396

@@PygmalionFaciebat I definitely don't mind the activity. Right now I have a Morkie(5) and a Havanese (3). . I love walking them. My Havanese also has a double coat. His fur gets tangled easily. You definitely have to stay on top of the brushing. 🐕 Thank you for the information. I'm sure you know a lot about GSDs. That's interesting about the hip height, I didn't know that. I know they're prone to hip issues which is sad. Did you get yours from a breeder?
@PygmalionFaciebat
4 ай бұрын
@@trawlins396 Back then, when we had your first german sheperds, i was a child - both of them weren't from a ''official breeder'' per se which was probably good , because the seller had probably no ''breed-goal'' in mind - as far i can tell and remember those two dogs didnt had any hip issues. Later on my sister got a german sheperd too when we were young adults and still lived at our parents. That third german sheperd was from a ''official breeder'' and my sister checked the medical values about her hip, and also the ancestry of the dog. Because at some degree its not avoidable that german sheperds are inbreed, that third dog we got, had its last ''inbreed'' at least around 2-3 generations before. Dont take my words about my ''hip''-knowledge to literally - its more of an eyesight-experience - a doctor can say much more about it. Maybe even there are german sheperds with a lower back who have no hip-issues at all. My sister has much much more knowledge and experience about german sheperds than i have. As far i read you, your knowledge about dogs is also quiet good - very likely comparable with mine, or even superior. After the third/fourth dog of my sister, we/i never had dogs again. (I said third/fourth dog, because back then she got herself two german sheperds, but one of them was a ''altdeutsche'' german sheperd (its a interesting race - as far i know a much older race of german sheperds.. it is darker and has longer hair.. its also a bit more massive - the face is wider in comparison to the newer german sheperds). You know, i am more of a cat person , but i also dont have a cat. This has other reasons (partielly money, ... partielly personal issues, etc ). As far i can tell, you would be a very good ower of a german sheperd - espescially because you already have dogs and experience with them. If you were a newbie i would probably not recommend a german sheperd as the first dog. As first dog i would recommend a smaller race with much less needs - espescially less needs on activity etc ... But this also depends wehter someone lives in the countryside, or in a city. If someone is a experienced dog-owner, this difference doesnt matter, i would say. Besides that... all of this are much more opinions from experience. I wouldnt consider myself as an expert. To humble myself: a friend of mine is an assistent at a animal doctor - and although she agrees with me on a lot of parts i say about dogs, she also have few moments, were she facepalms about me, and need to correct me (and she is obviosusly right, because she is a professional) - so yes - everything i say has to be perceived with a grain of salt. I wouldnt say my comments are meaning nothing, but you know what i mean. I am not an expert on dogs. But i hope i also could say some useful things here about german sheperds, out of my experience.

Or he knows that you are friendly with the mirror-dog and he now accepts him 😄 Dogs identify themselves mostly by smell and the mirror doesn't smell so by sight they don't think of it as themselves. According to the mirror-test they don't recognize it like chimps, elephants, dolphins and so on.
@BertrandBarraud
4 ай бұрын
I was about to post the same thing, your reflection helps them understand it's a not real. I did the same for my dog. The mirror reflection test is by himself, a dog couldnt recognize himself during the test. It's basically a mark they put on them and if they touch the mark after seeing in the mirror they are considered self aware. I think the test is too limited and some species might need a little extra help. Definitely being with the dog during the reflection helps him understand it's either not real or it's you and him/her in there.
@D.H.1082

@@BertrandBarraudThat's quite an interesting point. Dogs definitely are keenly adapted to recognize the specific visual distinctions in humans. So, while they aren't perhaps self-aware, they can recognize the reflection as long as it is associated with his owner.

As a rule, dogs ignore their reflection. The reason? By far their dominant sense is smell, and if they "see another dog" in reflection, but their sense of smell detects nothing, they decide that, whatever they are seeing, there is no dog there. This dog's reaction is interesting largely because it is relatively unusual.

@@Alpha0727 Dog can "learn how mirrors" work in that they can associate what is _behind_ them with what is in the mirror. However, they do not understand that _their reflection_ is themselves. They cannot pass the "dot on the forehead" test which is an indicator of self awareness with respect to the image. And they will never open their own mouths and examine the insides of their mouth to see how their tongue works, etc, as a chimp and a dolphin will do.
@chuckles471
4 ай бұрын
@@Alpha0727 They don't, it's just habituation that they don't react to themselves eventually. Dogs literally don't have the cognitive ability to figure it out, even collies don't have the ability. They just get used to the "dog in window". Also what you perceive as the dog using a reflection to "see" who is in the kitchen, isn't what is happening. They will literally know who is in the kitchen by smell alone, which is way more impressive. All they are doing is reacting to movement in the window.
@cameronabshire1195
4 ай бұрын
@@chuckles471 Maybe. It's possible that animals are more self-cognizant than we are aware of, but we cannot prove or disprove it. The mirror test for dogs is not universal; some dogs pass it very fast after being introduced to it. Additionally, as you've said, dogs' primary senses are smelling and hearing. Dogs are acutely aware of their own scents versus other scents - if you present them with their own scent on an object that they've never interacted with before, they will know that scent is their own. Humans are incapable of knowing their own scent, instead we only get a sense of "smells like home". The mirror test is also flawed even for animals primarily relying on vision. If you test it on wild animals randomly (as a couple of famous videos have), many of them will react with fear or aggression. This is because living in the wild requires split-second decisions about what is or isn't safe, and hesitating for even a moment will get you killed. Notice how animals generally don't react to their own reflections in the water; they at least know that the animal of their likeness in the water isn't dangerous. The best way I could put it is like... Have you ever walked past a mirror at night and been deathly afraid you just saw an intruder in your home? It's like that all the time for animals. Imagine never having seen a perfect reflection of anything in your life, and then just seeing a stranger standing across from you - glaring at you ominously. It looks nothing like your reflection in the water you drink, so you don't know that it's a reflection; the thought of reflections never even comes to mind as you and this creature lock eyes in a way that nobody else has ever done to you before. There's no time to comprehend it, there is only the intense dread that these may be your last moments alive.

I remember when my dad busted out laughing after I had the harshest wheeze of my life (it sounded like a really drawn-out sick cough). The very sudden wheeze happened because of the dog trying to scramble so fast that he almost fell down the stairs, supermaned out the door, slipped on some ice, went into stiffy-mode, then spun-out into the snow. Dad didn't even see what happened, but started laughing his butt off after hearing that once in a lifetime wheeze. Lol
