I've had German shepherds for 40 years. They are hands down the easiest dogs to train, the most loyal, the most intelligent dogs on the planet. They really do want to please you. They need to be socialized and trained. They are naturally protective since their original job was herding sheep. You are their sheep. They will even "herd" you around the house. If you do not mind the non-stop shedding and have plenty of time to be with your dog, they are the BEST! They are also a very clean dog. They do shed but have very little doggy odor. I cannot say enough great stuff about this breed. Thanks!!!

I had a German Shepherd. He was adopted but my cousin adopted his parents so I knew his mom and dad. He was extremely protective and didn't let anyone near the house, the car or us in general. He could become violent if he felt someone was getting too close to us. He did not like other male dogs but loved females. That being said, he was soooo loving and the most loyal dog I've ever known. He was the baby of our family and always looking out for us. My dad is physically disabled and he would always be with my dad or checking on him if he heard any noise and he couldn't sleep without my dad. He was also very smart and funny. He loved to play soccer and played like a human lol. P.s we're from Massachusetts too and his name was Boston ❤️

Excellent German Shepherd review for those dog lovers who are unaware of the nuances between working and show lines. Having had 2 GSDs in the past, 1 from show lines and 1 from working lines, I have to echo the differences. A working GSD - especially if it has an alpha prey drive - requires A LOT of work and can be a risky animal for the person or family seeking a dog primarily for companionship.

Agreed. Unless you are willing to devote many hours every single day just to training your Malinois, do not get one. It's like a dog with ADHD. They are high drive and high focus. Working line German Shepherds are similar but a touch more mellow. Better at adapting for home environment and work.

@@Slaterbby yes. So long as you do proper introductions. If you get a puppy then that would be a bit easier as you would guide the dog on how to properly behave as it mature. If you got an older dog from a German Shepherd rescue, you would simply tell the rescue what you are looking for and they will accommodate your needs. Many large breed dogs especially German Shepherds are capable of cohabitating

My working class German Shepherd was wonderful with people, kids, and even cats. I just had to watch him when he was around other dogs. I suggest you introduce your GSD to as many dogs as you can when it's a puppy. I lost my GSD to twisted stomach or what they call bloat, so make sure you feed your GSD smaller meals during the day and avoid exercise after eating. One small meal in the morning, and another in the evening should do it. You don't want that stomach flipping on your dog, it's very painful for the dog, and an expensive surgery! Just remind your dog who's in charge by working with your dog on walks, and you can take dog training classes for good canine citizenship with your dog as well. Its very important that you're able to control a big dog like a GSD around other dogs and people, so if you spend the time, they're very easy to manage because of their great intelligence and their willingness to please. German Shepherds are wonderful dogs!

My wonderful pure bred German shepherd [I adopted him 11 yrs. ago from the Amish on a farm. He is so beautiful strangers constantly take pictures of him, they even ask for the phone number of the breeder. He is extremely intelligent, no leash and he obeys always, won't cross a street until I tell him to. He likes going to Walmart and Marshalls is pet friendly,, the post office etc. Anyway he is extremely protective of our home. In addition to dry dog food I give him raw beef liver, 4 or 5 huge chunks. We go [off leash of course] to the wooded area or fields, once a pit bull attacked him and he was like ''bring it on fool'' lol my advise? BE KIND ALWAYS TO YOUR DOG. Now he has hip trouble but still a good life.

Just wanted to add for anyone who is interested in a german shepherd, but worried about aggression: A reason they are so popular with police/military is that they are one of the only dogs that can be trained to release a bite during attack. Other dogs don't have the same impulse control that gsd have with training. That's why even though they have a high prey drive, it is very feasible to teach them not to chase after squirrels or terrorize your other pets. My family gsd that we had growing up was very gentle and playful with cats and other small animals because he was well socialized. He was the most trustworthy dog I've ever had. As for intelligence, gsd that I know seem to have more of an understanding of their surroundings and treat it like their job to keep tabs on where everyone in the family is. And as far as guarding goes, there was a week in my neighborhood with break-ins all down our street. One day, we came home and the dog had all but torn down the door to the garage where it seemed someone had come in, but left without taking anything, probably due to fear of being torn a new one. That was when he was 6 months old and we never had any issues after

Ummm, I know of plenty of snuggly German Shepherds. Yet, they're often only snuggly with people they're bonded with, and nobody else. But, there's also some that are quite dominant + aloof. There's plenty of temperament variations in between. You can end up seeing dominance aggression and/or fear aggression. Puppy selection is critical. Temperament testing from the start is important for selection into the right home. But, this sort of dog needs an experienced home because they're a bit more complicated as far as correction goes, or with settling one (or more) into a home with multiple dogs. Several seem to do better as a one to two dog home situation. Personally, I never use GSD's to scare others off. I just love GSD's for their sensitive responsive intuitive nature. Training is a breeze. This breed tends to be highly motivated to be with a person, and please you. But, not all of them are that easy. If you get a GSD that's highly independent (sometimes it happens), such a dog could care less what you ask, and training will be harder because you'll have to dig to motivate that sort of dog. Also, GSD's are easily messed up by a novice, or someone that is too forceful, or someone with bad timing. It's a fine line. GSD's are generally not too forgiving. That's why I don't suggest this dog for a novice unless you're going to do your research. Rocko is a wonderful example of a GSD that I prefer. Good overall info you've said here. Entirely.

We had a standard size American Eskimo he was 45 pounds and his name was Pushka. He was truly a beautiful dog. He could keep up with my very active daughter and was good for family. Couldn’t trust him not to bite. A delivery man came up to the house and the guy kicked him. Except for my husband who adored him. Pushka had no trust in men, any man. They shed a lot too. In his life went through a serious broken led the took twice as long to heal. Later years tumors all over his body. We had one removed because it interfered with his walking. He really suffered through that one. We loved Pushka. Would I recommend an American Eskimo I don’t think so. NO oops it been a year. You probably now have your fur baby I hope you happy with him or her.

@SweetStat
5 жыл бұрын
Not all shepherds are snuggly. I got 3. 1 isn't snuggly at all, she might come up and let you pet her for a few min, then she'll just hang out around me. 1 takes makes snuggling an extreme sport. She'll roll around like an alligator for 10-15 min before she leaves. The last one is a real snuggle pup, she would spend all day just chilling with me. They are all very affectionate, but in their own way. The one that doesnt like snuggling much was the easiest to train, she's an American showline GSD that cost me more than my first 4 cars together. The other two were stray dogs that I rescued.

Environment, training, socializing, breeding, bloodlines can effect temperament...then Each individual is different. I've had german show, American show and working lines... Just want to clarify that it takes proper personal protection training in order for working line GSDs to learn to bite humans, they do not do this naturally. They will bark more and be more territorial due to their genetics though. If you are looking for a “healthy” GSD, do not get a show line. They are significantly more pre-disposed to health issues due to overbreeding.

He is right. These dogs are no joke. You need to be a really strong trainer with them. My dad had two. They were in constant training and even with that, they were intense. Very protective dogs. I remember once in a forest a strange dog ran toward us, and within a heart beat, my dads german shepherds protection instinct turned on, and he bolted across the park and attacked the dog. My dad needed to break up the fight, and he ended up kicking the strange dog in the muzzle just to get it to back off (probably saved its life to be honest). It ran off. I was scared, I think I was around six years old and my brother was only five. Great protection dog, but you need to train them constantly, because their drive to protect is very strong. And if the dog wants off leash, it has the strength to run off leash. My dads dogs were good dogs and were trained in police work. But they are no joke. When they want to protect, they will protect, and you need to be a really strong trainer with them.

I got my gsd at a VERY reputable breeder here in italy, they called “german show line”. She ended up having hip displasia and many other health issues, her parents were all tested and ok... she had the BEST temperament ever, never aggressive toward humans, but very alert of other dogs, insaaaane hunting drive, and had separation anxiety, never destructive in the house but she scratched herself until bleeding when she sensed something was off (even when I had to travel). She hated cats and behaved very poorly around wild life. I loved that dog because she was extremely funny and had the best personality. But I will not get one again... So many people I know that get german shepherds nowadays have the same health issues my dog had. At age 8 she couldn’t go ski touring with us anymore, that killed her... And I believe that having a working line is not a solution either for us who are athletic, I had a friend that got one as a companion dog and she had to return it to the breeder, she is a very experienced dog owner, but she surely didn’t know what she was getting into... they are very neurotic and if you get something wrong while training those dogs, it takes a lot of work and time to train them out of that behavior.

Is getting a 10 month old German Shepherd from a rescue a bad idea because I will not know how it was bred? Is rescuing a shepherd in general a bad idea if I want a dog that will be friendly with other dogs and people? Are they that unpredictable with their aggression?
@jdx3268
4 жыл бұрын
Riley O'Day It certainly isn’t a bad idea per say, but if you’re looking or a certain temperament and would like guaranteed quality for health purposes, I would get a puppy. I went through the same thing and got a puppy. It’s great to rescue dogs that need it don’t get me wrong, but you also don’t want to run into the possibility of health/aggression issues due to the fact you are unsure how it was bred. I went with a puppy because I wanted to know the quality of dog I was getting and wanted to ensure she came from a healthy blood line so she could be my companion for as long as possible. I don’t think you could go wrong either way! Just my 2 cents

A german shepherd with colorings don't change any of the temperaments. It's the genetics, so working line are trained to have higher energy and can be a bit much for the average person. German shepherds can become aggressive, but many ppl don't know that they are naturally anxious and it can be difficult to help relax the dog. Especially when reading their body language wrong anyways. Canada is pretty cold lol and we have a lot of german shepherds that like to run around in the winter time. Its about climatizing also, the places around the world with different temperature & type of land can affect dogs no matter what. German Shepherd are also one of the top breeds with the most allergies. Looking into proper feeding, i like to feed the raw diet to keep the balance and adding extra vitamins. Shedding, are people who like the breed ready for a lot of hair? Is everyone in the family ready for a dog? This is a very powerful breed. They have the strongest jaw out of all breeds they have stronger jaws then pitbulls. The lock jaw of a pitbull is a myth. Temperament depends of the genetic lines of the parents, grandparents... e.c.t of that dog. Black german shepherd can be working line too or bred for looks. For the most part it's about choosing the breeder for temperament. The show line dogs can be aggressive too due to being bred based off of looks and no attention put into the temperament of that said dog. So their puppies can very well have problems like any other line in the breed. Research is key. It took me 2yrs to find the right breeder for what I'm looking for. Personally wanted a working line for my occupation. Finding the right dog for you & that fits. Can be a real challenge. If you are looking for a companion, try shelters. Many have shepherd mixes that would make beautiful companions. Wish you the best of luck!

Really depends on the dog. I fostered one (show line), he came from a shelter in Spain and he settled in very fast. After 3 days he was coming up to me wanting to play and he was just fine with everything. He was very, very calm for a GSD. Yes, they need exercise, they are ball junkies and he also enjoyed food puzzles but when it was time to chill, he was chill. He was great with kids and other dogs. He was protective of me but not aggressively. He just kinda always watched me from the corner of his eyes no matter what and was a bit distanced with strangers. However when he saw that I like someone he became friendlier with them. He learned tricks extremely fast and I think he understood a lot of things just from watching me do them. It has to be said though that they need a firm routine. Going out 5 minutes later is the end of the world for a GSD. Food comes earlier? why? should I eat it? Is this a trick? So be prepared to be on the clock. He didn't bark much and when he did, I trained him the "quiet" command. Since they are smart, you can teach them when to speak and when to be quiet. But he was seriously the best foster dog I've ever had and I am sad I couldn't adopt him. So I say don't generalise a breed completely, there are always exceptions. Dogs have personalities too and not all GSD are the same.

I question some of the things you are saying. Working line aren’t aggressive, if you properly train and exercise them. Their awesome family dogs and very loyal. These dogs aren’t for beginner dog owners.

The German Shepherd should be renamed America's dog. They are the most popular breed in America and have been I believe since the 20's. German Shepherds have the best temperament it all is on how you raise them. I grew up with it and they are wonderful with babies I cannot think of a more well-adjusted Bree besides maybe my chihuahuas

I'm a dog walker , nearly lost the end of my thumb to one lately , the young Shepard kept attacking the old one , this time I was all tangled up in leads and it was pissing with rain so when I went for her collar my thumb went in the side of her mouth in the process and it got sliced like a paper cutter 100% fracture 70% laceration , she's a nice dog but has a total screw loose almost screams with excitement when I show up , sadly won't be walking them any more though ain't risking my health further lol , lessons were learned that day .

I would never let anyone else walk my GSD... She is wild and needs her leader to be there if something happens where she needs to be directed. They are pack dogs and someone outside of their pack should NOT be walking them. That's probably something the owners of that dog needs to know

@@mightymedia6317 forgot to reply , I walked her for months before there were any issues she actually really liked me which was the problem , the owners were away for a while so I was looking after them full time and she seemed to grow on me more and more , but i was not allowed to give tsuiki any attention ( older white Shepard, police trained but had cataracts and arthritis) , so one day after a wet walk I dried Anya off first , then when I started to dry tsuiki off she went for her , full force biting her scalp and pulling st it , horrible to watch , so I managed to get her off that time with ease , happened the exact same a week after that and the day I nearly lost the thumb it was while we were out , pissing rain , and this time Anya had tsuiks by the nose and was trying to rip it off , so all tangled in the leads I went for anyas collar again but was too clumsy/stressed and the thumb went in the side of her mouth and got chopped like a paper cutter kinda thing , haven't seen them since as soon as I told the owner about the permanent deformation and nerve damage she maintained radio silence , absolute cow , I didn't pursue any legal action because it might have ended up with Anya being put down which she definitely doesn't deserve , never threw me a penny at all , quite furious about her attitude towards the situation ... long story short I would still walk Shepard's happily bu I'll be judging the owners first , my gut said these pet owners were a bit flakey and It turns out I was correct

I have 4 rough collies, I cant comment on smooth I want one though. My roughs are great, one of the best farm companion dogs I've ever had. Love affection and compared to most dogs I've had pretty laid back. My only big dislike is the grooming, nearly have to brush them every day and my sable headed white (the ones with solid white bodies) gets dirty right after a bath.

My first reaction would be no, but if your willing and able to get this dog out for exercise EVERYDAY, mental and physical, long walks ( or jog ) play ball, even better twice a day. It could work, and as with any dog it might take some time to get them to where they don't react to neighbouring noise. These dogs are energetic and intelligent, which means that if they don't get stimulus, they can become bored easily and that can create problems.

He's untrained and in quite a pitiful state. I'm not really worried about his health but the training.. He's only 9 months but I'm worried if he's still trainable... Do you think I still can teach him how to behave?

This was just a rotten review and I wouldn't listen to this guy at all in evaluating a German Shepherd. The distinction between getting a working line and a show line is not nearly as important as the one between breeders who work hard at mixing in dogs bred on the German, Japanese, and British standard rather than the American standard. 95% of the bad German Shepherds you encounter are bred on the American Standard. This standard emphasizes size and aggression. There is an overwhelming chance that a breeder who advertises in your local newspaper breeds on the American standard. At least here in the US. The German/Japanese/British standard is far more intelligent, less aggressive (because they are not fearful - aggressive dogs are usually scared dogs), are smaller, and more athletic. And they tend to have much, much better personalities. How great of a German Shepherd you end up with will depend on how much work you put into training them. They tend to get bored easily and need and want mental stimulation. I work hard to do something different every day to shake things up for my dog. For instance, I will sometimes get a bunch of treats (I feed him less at breakfast and dinner so that I can give him more treat games) and hide them all over the house. I mean, I try to find new ways of hiding them while he sits on the kitchen floor, waiting for me to hide tiny bits of chicken jerky. He then gets to play what I think of as "The Hunter/Gatherer Game," where he gets to search the house for dog treats. No matter how hard I work to hide them, he finds them all using his nose. If I put one underneath the edge of a rug, he sniffs it out. I'll rest a tennis ball on top of a tiny piece, and he sniffs that out as well. He'll spend a good 30 or 45 minutes searching for the treats until he is absolutely certain that he got them all. We have a huge number of games that we play and as long as he is playing them, he isn't bored or unhappy at all. But he also loves to just hang out with the family. My previous German Shepherd I got when she was a puppy and I worked very hard at teaching her games and tricks. She ended up knowing over 400 separate commands. She knew 40 different toys by name. I could tell her to go get a toy and take it to another person and she would. I'm not saying you have to work this hard with a German Shepherd, but will love it if you do. They WANT to learn things. I think that is what sets a German Shepherd apart from other breeds and it is why they are so desired as working dogs and service dogs and by the military and the police. If you want a quiet dog that doesn't need a lot of active play time, get a different breed (Great Danes are actually great for people who want quiet, placid dogs; they are also great dogs for small apartments; I am now 65 and plan on getting one more German Shepherd, but after that, if I'm still alive and kicking, I think I'll get a Great Dane because of their quiet nature). Also, this guy doesn't seem to know that German Shepherds are better with children - especially small children - than any other breed. This isn't just my opinion, but the opinion of many well known dog experts. Roger Caras, for instance, one of if not THE dog expert of a generation or two ago, rated every breed for how good they were with small children. German Shepherds were the only one that got a 5 (he used the same rating system). My daughter learned to stand by grabbing the fur on the side of my German Shepherd at the time and hauling herself up. My dog didn't love it, but the patience she displayed with my daughter was just extraordinary. All of my German Shepherds were incredibly affectionate and loving with the family and close friends but a little aloof with strangers. They were not unfriendly at all, but they just demanded that you take some time to get to know them. None of my dogs wanted to be out in the backyard by themselves. They would, if they could, be right beside you all day long. This guy also doesn't seem to know anything about the NUMBER ONE BIGGEST PROBLEM with German Shepherds: they are fur monsters. Because they have a smooth coat some think they don't have the fur problem that other breeds of dog do, but they are off the chart horrible with fur. It is not the external coat as much as the under coat. It just piles up in the house. I run a Roomba every day and each time it completely fills up. In fact, I got my current German Shepherd because the family who bought him - paying a small fortune for a show quality puppy - because they didn't know about the fur. They had never had a dog of any kind before and they were not prepared for the fur. So they left him in the backyard all the time, which just destroyed him emotionally. He thought he was being punished by being put in the yard. So when he was two they gave him to me (my daughter was a close friend of their family) and now, ten years later, he is still just the best dog imaginable. He had a stomach virus when I first got him, but since we figured out how to deal with that he has been absurdly healthy. Even though he is 12, he acts like he is still 2. I tell people that the next bad thing he does will be the first bad thing that he has ever done. He is just a great representative of a great breed. Hint: make sure that you don't get a dog whose parents were especially large. The ideal size for a male German Shepherd is around 75 or 80 pounds (dogs on the American Standard can be over 100 pounds - avoid any breeder who boasts about the size of their dogs like the plague). Females can be 65 to 75 pounds. I do think that it is crucial that you socialize your dog from the day you first bring them home. Find a dog park and let your German Shepherd meet a lot of dogs from all different sizes. They make spectacular Frisbee catching dogs. My first German Shepherd could have entered and perhaps won competitions. Final piece of advice: be sure that your potential breeder emphasizes the temperament and personalities of their dogs.

"This was just a rotten review"s I think this is a good review. He is telling his opinion about the breed overall with good information and research. "95% of the bad German Shepherds you encounter are bred on the American Standard" Where are you getting this number? What even is "standard" anymore? The size and appearance is all over the place, and so is temperament. No one seems to agree on anything about that. "German Shepherds are better with children" I hate this sentiment. Please, please, PLEASE never leave a child alone with a dog, especially a GSD. I want to flog the people that say this. "My daughter learned to stand by grabbing the fur on the side of my German Shepherd at the time and hauling herself up. My dog didn't love it, but the patience she displayed with my daughter was just extraordinary." Do not test the patience of a dog. You must intervene if your dog clearly doesn't like something done to her. Ask me how I know, I was mauled by a gsd as a child. If you don't know if you should get one just don't. They are the second most popular dog in America and they shouldn't be. This is not a dog for a beginner, and the community behind them are so toxic it makes the Chernobyl disaster look like a bad day at the gas station.
