Here's how I been personally using it. I call it family exploration. Basically I find a ancestor I wanna research, plop into Google Street view, look at the signs in cities and contact a local business through email, ask them questions and who should I contact for said region for more information. If I'm able to I give them a tip. It's soooo useful for genealogy. But also it's handy for traveling. I can map out a city or park before I even get there There is only so much you can find on Google maps not everything is listed. The stuff that is listed normally don't want to speak to us curious people

Topographers use it all the time to survey terrains. It's extremely useful for people who need to know the general layout of a place. If you wanna build a house or an apartment complex for example, it let's you see which types of buildings are around, let's you plan a route of how to get materials there, etc. It's not useful to the average person but there are some professions that greatly benefit from it.
