@@FredoRockwell I really don’t think so. I don’t know anybody who still has these notes and have never seen anyone pay with it or any store accept it since 2002. Maybe it’s more of an “old people - rural area” phenomenon. But I will ask the people I know if anyone is aware of it.

@@FredoRockwell I asked a few people (amongst them people who are 70 years old) if they think we could still pay with D-Mark anywhere and I always got the same answer. Something along the lines of „of course not, are you crazy, I haven’t seen D-Mark in 20 years“. Maybe only a few thousand people in Germany stashed away a lot of money which amounts to a big sum, but with a population of 83 million people in Germany the average German might not know a single person who still owns D-Mark. I think most people are completely unaware that this is a thing.

Some time ago, while I was researching the Deusche marks and looking for some to add to my collection, I saw the RT report and I couldn't believe it! It would be too good to be able to visit a shop and find the banknotes you are looking for face value:) I got my 100DM from a small local money exchange office in Bulgaria (and I bougth them for 50 euro only!), but when I exchanged an older 100 marks, I got just 40 euro for it - they still accept them in at least one exchange office in Sofia.

How interesting. I was last in Germany back in 2019 near Paderborn. A bar I visited was run by an elderly gentleman and his daughter. I had about 16 Deutsche Mark in coins on me and he happily accepted them as payment for a round of drinks. He was particularly interested with the 2m coins with their different portraits. He then put them at the bottom of his cash register.

I wonder how long it will be before the collector value finally outstrips the face value, at which point it would be foolish to spend them. I hope people are only spending the most worn ones, which are the least likely to have much collector value.

Technically no, as far as I understand, at least in terms of actually running the town. However, I think it's fair to say that the Principality is the most famous institution in Seborga, and is the primary driver of tourism, so in that respect the decisions the Principality makes do have a big impact on daily life there. I'm making a longer video in a few weeks and I hope to explain this better!

Well researched as always. I was hoping the whole time the shop keepers were keeping the money in circulation somehow but alas, I hope this changes so that the DM can survive with this indirect support provided by the Bundesbank. The conspiracy also makes no sense, if the Bundesbank was forced to reintroduce the Deutschemark I am sure they could decree €1=1dm overnight electronically as with the Euro and have the banknotes printed in a few months and it would go relatively smoothly. If I know anything at all about Germany and its people from my travels its that they follow the rules and don't seem to have the normal skepticism of everything the government does. Not a bad thing at all either, just very German, as is the policy of honouring the notes today. The government wants DM out of circulation so they honour it forever, knowing anyone still accepting it will cash it in for legal tender fast as they can to avoid ambiguity, doing as the government wishes, even though it remains fully guaranteed by the government at a fixed rate forever. Elsewhere the outcome would not have been the same!
