I am in the crane industry here in NYC, and I'm also a drummer of 30 plus years. My company only buys German manufactured cranes, Liebherr, and they are fantastic. Never break down, and constantly perform well above their intended use here. So as a DW player for over 20 years, I decided to purchase an SQ1 and sold my DW. I wanted an SQ2 but I was told it would take 2 years due to post covid supply issues. When I set the drums up 8,10,12,14,16 and 18x22 kick I was instantly blown away! The sound and feel to these drums was unlike anything I've ever heard or played before. I will never buy, or play anything but Sonor again!

The edge Sonor cuts only works because their shells are undersized.. I have tried those on regular non-undersized drums and it actually makes those worse off.

This is the best video I've yet found on drum sound on KZitem, absolutely brilliantly done- thank you so much. I have subscribed to lend at least a little support your work and your channel.

Thanks a lot for the nice feedback and for the subscription! If I may recommend a channel on drum sound: "www.youtube.com/@SoundsLikeADrum" Their whole channel basically is dedicated to drum sound and their videos are much more professional compared to ours. But we try to offer our unique little package with more "hands on" drum restoration and custom work :)

Side note, the Signature series, whenever I see them or hear about them, always makes me think of Ingo Schwichtenberg, the fantastic drummer for Halloween. Sadly no longer with us. He had an awesome double bass version around late 80's. Also Chester Thompson had a HUGE Signature kit too.

Just the use of an electric screwdriver or drill can get the tension rods quickly on and off, you can use a flathead screwdriver bit. (Or ST could make a key that fits a sonor slotted head and a drill/screwdriver chuck) Tunebot/drum dial are great tools that take the headache out of tuning. There are even good phone apps

I have a set of 60s tear drop with 6 ply shells and then I found one in red sparkle real cheap so I got it but it is a shorter 13x8with re-rings to ad to my 131620 set. the wraps are so expensive my neighbor took me to buy some veneer and I got Bubinga. He refinished my tear drop set as a 4 pc leavint the snare out. I use a Ludwig super sensitive as my main snare. i have all phonic hardware and a set of 600 series minus the hi hat and also a double stand. I want to ad another drum but since they no longer have bubinga I can not.

I got my first 1975 Sonor Phonic kit from a pawn shop (acrylic shells! 2 toms, 2 floors, 24 kick, 6.5x14 Ferromanganese snare. $300 in 1989. Bought another 1975 Sonor Phonic wood shell about 10 years ago. Love it!

I have loved these two videos you have made, almost as much as I love the Signature series themselves. I have never owned one, but I did get the pleasure to record on one in Madrid at he tail end of 1997. It was the studio's kit (Box Studio) It was only a 5 piece, 12, 13, 16 and 20 kick. I cannot recall how it sounded, but I do recall what incredibly well made and awesome looking drums they were. PS, you should have called your version Sonor STignature Series.

Thank you. This has been very interesting. Your Performer Kit came up quite well, however I did prefer the Signature Kit. I play a Signature Kit and would not choose any other Kit. Sonor has set an incredible standard. Shalom.

Yes, the 1980s produced some of the best looking drums ever made- I loved the Tama Artstar II, the Granstar, Pearl BLX/MLX, Yamaha Rock Tour Custom and ALL the Sonor series including the Sonor Phonic Plus Hi Tech (I remember it being reviewed in the very first issue of the British magazine 'Rhythm'!)

Recently I got a 1987 phonic D-516PA, about the snap system I use acetone and brush to clean the rod and nut. And then use light oil lubricating. after the process they work really well. I can easily fine tune the drum head, I think the dirt and old grease will make them hard to tune.

Would you guys happen to know a good way of removing the phonic badges from the drums in a safe way without damaging the drum? The badges are attached to the air vent grommet, any suggestions?

I always will love my Signature drums . I don’t know about the performer but sounds beautiful too . I do stick with Horst 🥰 The only thing what I can’t figure out what heads i should use on my Signature series .

thanks for the comment 😁 the performer are a lot of bang for the buck, but if you already own a signature I would stick with that! lots of people play pinstripes on the toms - I think they were originally delivered with them or something similar

I have a sonor designer set and I bought 3 additional Toms from a music shop in California to add to the set. Unfortunately, you can't buy hardware to hold those tom-toms. I had to jury rig my own hardware with a welding torch and some hardware store stock steel. It works fine , however , I was wondering if one can use the newer sq2 hardware so that it could mount on existing sonor designer tom so I can use a newer sonor stand as is without my jury rigged mounts.

Thanks for the comment! I think the tomarms of the SQ2 are a bit thinner. But on reverb you can still find designer tomarms from time to time. They are not cheap, but in Germany they come up to the market regularly. BTW we are currently working on a long video like this one, just about the designer series😉
