It's great to see you making a video sharing the planting of apples from seed, too many people for too long believed and still do that growing from seed is a fool's errand. Thanks for all the tips Nick my seeds are still in the fridge and I'm also doing some that are overwintering in pots buried in my pile of woodchips. I figure it works in nature and with some of my nut trees so we shall see on germination results.

I think part of that is that if you grow a grocery store apple from seed and the pollen parent was, unbeknownst to you, a flowering crabapple you'll probably get small and/or sour/bitter fruit. The other is you're probably waiting no less than three or four years to get fruit, while a grafted tree might produce fruit (that you should probably thin) the first year.

Do you do any stone fruit breeding? I just started some Siberian peach seedlings.

I don’t breed stone fruit yet but I do germinate the seeds the same way. Don’t let them dry out.

So I have Dwarfs ...Semi Dwarfs... and Standard apple trees if i germinate their seeds will the rootstock be a standard size tree or something else ?

Most seedlings will be standard size. Most trees are dwarfed due to the dwarfing rootstock they are grafted to. The dwarfing doesn’t come from their DNA. So seedling from most varieties are full size trees with ocasional med and dwarf trees. That’s how dwarf rootstock is selected. The weakest seedlings would be considered your genetic dwarf trees.

How many weeks will it take after sowing the apple seeds on the plants in the field? Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🤝7:19

It will depend on temperature.

Do you wait until danger of frost has passed or plant around the same time as you would maybe hardy flowers or brassicas?

@@Hayley-sl9lm you watch the seeds, they don’t wait sometimes, if they begin to grow roots they need to go in some soil. I plant them in pots in my greenhouse, it doesn’t freeze in there by this time of year. Ideally plant after last heavy frost.
