I’m so glad I found your video a months ago when I was preparing my seeding. As the first batch, I used ziplocks to germinate some daikon and green pea seeds. 90% of them germinated within 7-10 days. Now they were transferred to the pots and growing well. After the first success, I did some snow peas and saw the sprouts in less just three four days! Feeling comfortable about your method, I bought a bag of lavender seeds from Amazon. Lavender is supposed to have very low germinating rate. But after just 5 days, amazingly, I found about 16 out of the 40 seeds started germinating even the weather has been raining and cold. Now, the temp is going to stick in the 60F, I’m expecting more to come! Thank you for sharing your tips. The wonderful thing is when looking at the bags hanging on the window, I could literally see how the little guys grow everyday, and have idea exactly how many seeds are growing and can dump the dead ones. It’s so helpful!

just bought a cabin on about 7 wooded acres up against state land this past July and had some "cleaning" to do since the previous owner really wasn't able ( elderly ) to get out in the woodline very much. We rushed out and bought raised beds when it was still thick with snow here and now we are kind of rushing to get some seeds germinating ( yes I went and bought every vegetable and herb I knew we would use ). I remember my grandmother use to just use paper towels and set it in her window sill but the baggie makes sense. Who am I to question a free greenhouse. We started the homesteading lifestyle simply because we just need to step backwards and get back to basics ( i.e. stop eating garbage ). At least this way we know exactly what is in our kids' food.

So you wait for it to show green before you remove them? I have alot of them where the roots are just starting to show growth and I can even smell them ! Just not green yet

Just curious...would it help the seeds to germinate more quickly if they were soaked in barely warm water for 8 hours, then put in baggies on damp paper towels? I have no idea and wondered if someone on here or yourself could give an educated answer. Thanks. Super towel/baggy method. Gonna do it.

I looked up to see if someone else is doing this. I started doing it randomly and it's been very effective yet I don't know what to do after it germinates and it germinates very fast!

I already have carrot seeds that I germinated in a baggy. I see the sprouts after 5 days. I need to know when and how to plant the sprouts in soil in a pot.

Great video! Good tip about not getting it soaking wet. I'm getting confused about the lighting though. Some say to put in a south facing window for light and some people say to put it in a dark place. Which is it?
@WELSBYROOTS

Its heat, dark warm place or in a sunny window. Iv never tried the dark warm place before, maybe I will. Remember when you plant a seed in the ground, it's the heat of the sun that draws it up.

Question,? Would it hurt to put a piece of the paper towel along with the seed root into the soil rader trying to detach the rooted seed and breaking off the root I figure the paper towel piece will desolve in the soil in time being degradable etc.?

Can this method also be used with very small seeds?

When using the ziplock method, I leave my bags unsealed. I find that this way prevents mold. I also put the bags in a box or cabinet, they don’t require sun that early. This is only from my experience, I live in Florida. Thank you for your videos and I love your content!

@@WELSBYROOTS I have a question for you. This is my first for the tender sweet carrots in the ziplock. I started them 2 days ago so, today they look like tadpoles. When do I plant them and how far down in the soil?
@WELSBYROOTS
10 ай бұрын
@mywindowspeaks I would plant them in in when there a inch or two. But depending on the method you use, I would use little cups of soil. Then harden them each day for a week. Bringing them out in the sun for a few hours a day and back in.

Most seed doesn't like light to sprout. Yet it seems to work. A black sheet around the bags might speed the process up. I set my warmth loving seeds (like tomato) on the stb (TV decoder, modem will also do) they germinated in a day this time!

Do you have to close the ziplock bag? I have mine on a heat mat in an unheated garage under grow lights. I did everything you did in the video but I didn’t ziplock the bag, I just laid it closed.
@nsmcastillo326

Yes keep it closed or it'll dry up the wet paper towel, keeping the paper wet is what helps the seeds germinate.

If the paper towel is damp enough, the should be all the water you need to germinate the seed. Iv never had to add water. Great question and thanks for commenting!

You will have more success this way, and want waste time with duds that aren't going to germinate. Good luck and thanks for commenting.
