To third order in the wave slope Gerstner (rotational Gamma not equal to zero - no Lagrangian mean flow) and Stokes (irrotational Gamma = 0 - non-zero Lagrangian mean flow) have the same geometry. Their kinematics are different though -- the Stokes waves have a finite amplitude correction to their phase speed and it is this that we can measure using remote sensing techniques. Therefore, these instruments can be used to infer the underlying Lagrangian mean flow.
