Gertrude Ederle, 85, delivers her New York Sports Hall of Fame induction speech at Sheraton Centre Hotel & Towers on February 11, 1991.
As a 20-year-old daughter of a Manhattan butcher in 1926, the Olympic-champion swimmer became the first woman to swim the English Channel, and faster than any man had done it.
After battling deafness, a back injury that left her in a cast for four years, and a nervous breakdown, the Daily News reported in 1959 that Ederle led “a recluse-like retirement.”
Ederle is introduced by ceremony emcee and WCBS-TV anchor Jim Jensen.
