ChatGPT came out my last semester of college. My capstone was making an extremely ambitious D&D character builder. I was using ChatGPT extensively. It became obvious I wasn't going to finish it and then auto GPT came out. I reframed it as an experiment for using auto GPT to write web apps. The conclusion was that it wasn't ready yet. But at my job after college, I enrolled in the AI beta programs as early as possible, and I use it hundreds of tims a day

I've been experimenting with this a bit in ChatGPT's web interface (not Github Copilot). Very impressed with the speed and quality of the code it generates, and its ability to go beyond creating single functions and actually design full applications. I think your video is spot on with the future implications for this tech.

Thanks Andrew! I didn't think I'd see the day when Programmers become irrelevant or at least a very different profession, but I predict that is exactly what we are experiencing.

When I listen closely to people proliferating this view, I repeatedly get the distinct impression they are failed coders, or entrepreneurs who despise having to pay for developers, or managers who just dont understand, etc., salivating at destroying those annoying software developers. AI generating a little piece of code is not replacing programming, or development. The coding part of software development is a tiny fraction of the SDLC, and the examples Ive seen given of AI coding only cover a tiny fraction of the coding developers have to do. One of the objectives of software development is to build something unique and/or bespoke for an organisation, or to sell as a product, which cant just be spat out by AI. Anything of any value will require detailed engineering and design and writing of the software. This was all being touted 10 years ago that drag and drop IDE tools would replace developers and it couldnt build anything of value it and died a death. 20 years ago it was 4GLs were going to replace developers, and that failed too. Good proper software developers will always be needed to build new products. Do a search on 'AI Washing' and have a read on how AI is not what is being made out to be.

It can never replace programmers, but can complement it.

The complement ability of it is amazing for sure. Makes you a much better programmer

Well its not just coders who will be obsolete soon, next will ne the new prompt engineers who will train their replacements like coders have than the next and so on ubtil all humans are obsolete. What about creativity? The machine doesnt care.

Good point. Thanks for the comment! It’ll take a bit of time for things to go down, but certainly the age of big big programmer paydays is waning. Product Managers might do well as they get the specifications for software and can tell the AI what they want to have built.

Sure. It does. Sometimes. Less than most coders. And the speed is incomparable to humans. Right now you still have to know the language to watch it. But that will change very quickly. I don't think the fact that it might make errors now changes the overall story. Does it?
