Great video, Dave. It's not that we have fear of grafting... it's that we do it, then we fail.... and it took a long time of waiting for it to get disappointed by the results. But I'll try it again. You are a great motivation. I've been more successful with air layering, but for grafting, I still need more practice.

I have a question about grafting on to a Pyracantha bush, I am wondering if the same thing that happens to a Chickasaw plum when something is grafted on to it, if that could happen to a Pyracantha bush as well. Yeah, that's the way to do it. You could probably just prune the dickens out of one and keep it in a pot and get it to fruit, though, no grafting required. Look up "Backyard Orchard Culture" and "Summer Pruning." Some people get 40' trees to fruit at 6-8'.

@@davidthegood I have looked in to this, it sounds like grafting loquat on to quince, in other words unless you know that a particular loquat variety will graft well with a particular "pyracantha" variety, then there is a high risk of graft failure. Someone has tried and failed such a graft. Yet a lot of people who produce Loquat commercially, do graft Loquat on to pyracantha. Successfully.

David, thank you for this detailed information! A small tip: if you want to wrap the graft with parafilm against evaporation, this is very easy if you do this partially in advance. Great video. Informal and informative. I've been grafting for about ten years and I learned from reading and just practicing. Still it's a good idea to see what other folks know since this is one activity where there's always more to learn. Once you have learned the basics you can experiment in so many ways. Beyond technique the most important thing to learn is when to do it. I know you couldn't possibly cover that here because it varies so much from type of plant to climate.

I did flagging tape and wound sealer last year, and it worked about the same as parafilm and a clothespin. However, the parafilm/clothespin method I could leave on until fall. The flagging tape and wound sealer I had to remove in summer, in order to let the graft union expand. I'm lay, and leave my grafts wrapped until the leaves have fallen. Either way works, though. I use an Imperial yellow knife to cut. It keeps a good edge, and I've made it single-bevel.

Ooh! One more thing! When I cut scions in late winter (before or during pruning) I seal both ends with that same pruning sealer. I used 8 oz last year so got 16 oz for this year. It wears off in a couple of years, and is completely harmless. Other folks use grafting wax to seal their scions, but that's - again - too much work for me. When I cut a piece off of the saved scion for grafting (2 or 3 buds' length) I don't keep the part that had the pruning sealer, just because, just because. I cut my scions to 9 inches to fit nicely into a gallon freezer zipper bag.

A few years ago we moved to our new house with an old apple tree, and hadn't sold the old house and its apple tree. I was able to take scions from the old one and graft them, a couple years in a row. I had about 10% success rate (not too bad for no clue what I was doing, imo), but they really took off on the suckers. One was about six feet and probably would've bloomed this year. But the neighbors needed a bit of room for a construction job and asked if they could trim what was hanging over their yard, and as a thank you... trimmed back all the suckers around the base, including the two happiest grafts. That hurt a bit. I think there are still two or three grafts on main branches, so we'll have a blush-colored tart apple tree, with sections of green floral-flavored apples :D

...one trick for knowing "Which end of the scion was 'Up'?" I've learned from other KZitem-ers is easier to understand than to describe: Cut your scion into useable segments that all have 'Flat' bottoms, and 'Angled' tops. Always make your 'harvesting" cut through the 'donor' twig perpendicular/at right-angle to the twig - so the 'bottom/butt' of the removed scion is 'flat'...this also minimizes the surface area of the cut on the 'donor- branch. Next, working 'up' the scion (toward the narrower, uncut 'tip), make your first 'dividing' cut Close Above a bud '-- and on a 'diagonal' to the scion that slopes 'downward' behind that bud; your first segment will have a FLAT bottom & an ANGLED top. Even if you set-down or drop the scion, you'll immediately know 'which end was 'down' because of the fresh cut. Then, immediatly trim-off the angular bit from the 'bottom' of the next segment to make it FLAT -- and make your next dividing cot on an angle -- again, sloping Down behind the bud. Repeat as you finish cutting that scion into segments.

I “cringed” to watch you “notching” the oblique slant razor cut on both twigs with your boxcutter knife while firmly holding the pieces with your unprotected left hand. Fingers don’t come easy. Hands are delicate organs that should not be abused. Your tutorial audience found bandaids amusing and made facetious comments which I didn’t appreciate. I learned a lot about grafting. I was not aware that plants can accept heterografts so readily without rejection by stem root recipients.

Fear is gone... I attempted my first graft today. A satsuma hit hard by the freeze was putting out suckers from the root stock so I cut it just below the nursery graft and did a 4 way cleft, satsuma, clementine, Louisiana sweet orange and a Meyer lemon. Waxed the crown and tips and made a mini greenhouse from a Lutz cheese ball container... should I try to provide some shade? The thing is in full sun and temps in south Louisiana are heating up fast... don’t want to cook it. ??

There are even tools for this... you can have multiple apples on one tree. Be careful of saving graft, can die in winter, than you get stuck with cheap base. You can also barter for different types of apples. Had a great Aunt that had six different apples... would donate the apples to neighborhood families that did not have much money...

We have a 30 yr. old peach tree that has reached its peak and starting to decline. After watching the video we are going to try grafting the old tree to a young apricot tree. Thanks for your great vids.

Yes you do have a lot of fun that's the way to do it. Life is good. Very informative to me coz I'm hopefully starting to live in a land from scratch doing homesteading. Thank you.

If anyone wants to help me, I'd deeply appreciate it. 3 months ago, I just grafted a bunch of fig trees, I did the "whip and tongue" method, tied them with cut rubber bands, and used 1/2" parafilm to cover, and then tied paper bag over it. None of my grafts took .It appeared all of them oxidized and dried out. I know I lined up the cambium, but it appears they dried and shrunk and misaligned the cambium. I am in a desert climate (phoenix az, 7 inches annual rainfall) but it did rain a lot this spring (for us, anyways) I don't know if it was my parafilm being only 1/2" or if I just didn't wrap tightly enough? Or if my rubber bands lost their stretch? I know the scions were good, because I rooted half of them, and all the rooted cuttings took. I'm looking for answers. I completely wrapped the graft union and the scion wood. Its possible my cuts weren't "smooth" enough? Even if the cambium is lined up, does it not matter if there's any gap? I tried really hard to make them smooth, but this is my first time.

Stanley knife with no gloves? Is that why you have a plaster on? Great tip on how to lose your fear at c. 47 mins...
