I presented this topic at the NNPG meeting on 3-14-15. This is one of the most important bags that you can set up, it's the first rung on the ladder above EDC.
good brief. some thoughts... a gethome bag should be totally based on how far you have to go. I work 150 miles from home so its huge. my wife works 9 miles from home so its tiny. our job is to get home as fast as possible, not to camp out. pin the safety pins in the material of the flap of the ifaks. pay more attention to weight.the less your pack weighs the faster and farther you can go. and that is the whole point, isn't it? be careful thowing around the term "mil-spec". lots of stuff with camo pattern isn't mil-spec. and mil-spec is great but not always the best option. mil-spec is almost always heavy. add a hiking stick with a sharp end. I believe dogs will be a more common problem than most consider. the best thing you can advise people is to be in shape. be able to move fast carrying weight and under stress....

Renaissance MarineTV All good points. I always stress that 'Prepping is Personal". So if you are farther or closer you can opt to go big or small. We don't plan on camping out either but shit happens so I like to have some small option available. Mil spec is a term and I did use it loosely. There is well made MilSpec gear and crap that could be considered MilSpec. My main point was to look civilian, not military or police so that you can not draw attention to yourself. Hiking stick is a good add, I have one and I can take the foot off and have a point to hold off and aggressive dog, yep dogs could be a larger problem.Being in shape, absolutely! I need to be in better shape myself and am working on that as well, just part of the preps! Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Not looking tactical or milspec, so less people will mess with you is a myth. In reality looking prepared for encounters deters encounters. Homeless guys and harmless looking people get victimized all the time. I've never encountered a victim who appeared as a tough target aka tactical. Just my 2cents if you care what a LEO has observed over the years.

I understand your point. From my perspective, if a hoodlum sees a bum, no mater. If he sees a guy with a shiny watch, different matter. Looking tough in many instances does set a demeanor that send the message I will fight back. On the other hand, the hoodlum who wants to prove himself.... I think it's more of specific instance and circumstance that makes the moment. In the end, if someone who sees a pack (that must have good stuff in it), wants it, it wont matter if you looked rucked up or not.

The criminal will always pick what they feel is a soft target. Most criminals are cowards. Over 20 years in uniform and I have never seen a criminal go after someone that looked prepared whether that be their military style pack/clothing, weapons, demeanor, build, etc. I have seen more homeless people mugged and killed over the years than I have some guy with a shiny watch.
