I don't normally comment on videos, but I have to say these exercises helped me a ton. I'm not exactly a beginner runner, but I've been having trouble with shin splints. Over winter, I kept ignoring them until it developed into a stress reaction/fracture and had to take a few months off. Since starting back, I've been doing these exercises along with the ones from Duane's glute/hip strength video. At first, I did the calf stuff every day, and the glute stuff once a week. Now I'll do 3 sets of these + 3 sets of the hip strength once a week + either single leg or weighted bulgarian split squats. No more constant pain on my inner shin; it'll pop up every so often at low levels but goes away by massaging the tibialis. Thanks Duane, you rock!

Great video, thanks. Should these exercises be done even if you feel pain while doing them? Thanks.

As long as the pain is less than a 4/10 and it doesn’t linger after then I would say yes if you were working with me, however, not knowing your specific situation I would defer to your your medical providers.

Came from StrengthRunning Podcast - started running couple months ago and shinsplints kept me from increasing volume as fast as I wanted to. Looking forward to doing this exercises.

How often should these be done? And should they be done alongside running...or...at a different cross-training time?

If you are feeling symptoms now then I would recommend every day making sure that the exercises don’t make you feel worse and then as your symptoms are subsiding then decrease to 3x/week and then 1x/week when you are back running and only feel them mildly after a long run. Eventually you won’t need them if you continue with other run specific strength exercises 👊🏼

As a long time runner without injuries, I’ve started having more in the past couple years (post- having 3 babies, breaking my right tibia, entering my 40s and then moving from a flat city to a hilly one). Your podcast and KZitem channel has been one of two resources I continually come back to for running advice. I’m experiencing shin splints as I now try speed work for the first time. Question: at what point do you recommend going to a GP to request an X-ray to rule out fracture? Another question: do you do virtual visits that can be billed to insurance? Thanks again!

Thanks for following along and I am happy to hear the content has been helpful. X-ray will only diagnose an old stress fracture that has healed. An MRI would be needed to diagnose one that is currently going on. I help runners with shin splints combining the injury management, structured run plan and strength training for running through a coaching program so no it is not reimbursable through your traditional medical insurance. I would recommend finding a good local PT who works with a lot of runners to help you before going down the imaging route

Will these still help if my pain is more on the front/outside of my shin and not the inside?

Yea they will! Two of the exercises target the front and outside muscles 💪🏼
