Nice intro to sensors video. My personal favorites are PIR sensors coupled with mmWave, such as the Everything Presence One sensor, or even just the EPLight Sensor, without the PIR. Great for monitoring presense and controlling the lights in my most used rooms, such as our Computer Room and Kitchen. I have the lights turn on to certain temperatures based off the the time of day/sun position when occupancy is detected in a room, then turn off again if not already turnt off once occupancy has been clear for more than 1-5 minutes depending on the room. Love it.

Great recommendations any luck with monitoring if a backyard gate is open?

An outdoor contact sensor should work well for this. If you already have Ring, they make one just for outdoor use. Same concept as monitoring if a house door is open or closed.

I set up a software defined radio, SDR, with RTL-433 and found I could read all the gas meters in my neighborhood. I figured out which was mine and added it to Home Assistant using MQTT. It didn't work for the water and electric meters.

Nice. Yeah I still want to bring gas readings into HA.

All nice and dandy, but how do you setup all those automations in a structured and maintainable way. HA or Node-RED?

I use a bit of both, mainly NR as I like the graphical side of it. I used to be 100% HA but converted most to NR as I found it was slightly quicker. I do YAML only in HA, but not the newer editor as I’ve been running HA for about 7-8 years now and I didn’t want to convert them all over.

I manage my automations in Home Assistant. Categories and Labels help keep things organized.
