I owned the original SansAmp Bass di, the one without knobs, it was lame. Then when the og SansAmp Bass Di came out I got it, didn’t like it’s harshness when lots of gain was needed/added, it lacked a mid control, got rid of it. Then I bought the SansAmp VT Bass, best so far, mids for days, but still that harsh unusable distortion when the drive knob is up, do XLR di out put on it either. I also have a Tech 21 XXL that died on me after a month, it’s sat in a drawer for the last 15 years or whatever it’s been. SansAmp almost gets it right but misses the mark every time for me. I have Behringer mixers, comps, X-Air12, RV-600 Reverb etc., not one problem after using their stuff 20 years. Can’t say the same for SansAmp,

I have one of these. I got it for a laugh and it ended up becoming my main boost pedal. I do also use the drive from it but I agree with you regarding cranking it. It starts to lose the grit and just starts sounding like you're driving a solid state amp's input just a little bit *too* hard.

I used multiple Sansamp pedals, including the Bass Fly, for years with a jam band. While it was great recording and set up was relatively quick, especially with the Bass Fly, the tones were not to my liking when I played to my own music or with tracks for practice. Sure, the effects were a nice touch and adding w touch of compression cleaned up the tone, but there wasn't enough "oomph" and vibe, just that "samey" bass tone like these examples. I think Darkglass does a better job with this sort of product. They are much smoother sounding... but this particular pedal for $20 used? Not bad.

Could we please hit this 'plastic' issue on the head once and for all? There's plastic and there's plastic! Behr's pedal cases are made from ABS - acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, which sounds like a Klingon sneeze. This stuff is so tough that companies like Challenger and Trojan use it to make flight cases, so it's not only strong enough to make cases for instruments, it's strong enough to make the cases that protect the instrument cases! I have no connection with Behr but I get weary of self-appointed pedal gurus whose expertise evaporates when it comes to what the things are actually made of. Put it this way: is there anyone here who's actually succeeded in breaking one of Behr's pedal casings, or knows someone who has? Short of flailing at it with a hammer it just won't happen (and even then it would be hard work).

I've had a BDI21 for 12? years now. I love the sound of it though it stays at home now. Thinking of a DIY project to put it in a rack enclosure. I agree on the drive, it sounds crappy when cranked. The blend knob stays on the tube amp side. I don't really like the transistor amp modeling. But the tube side gives a really good, fat, sometimes creamy tone. Ive read that the DI output is on the low side (qualified that the same was true of the sansamp) and I would probably agree. Some inexperienced sound guys have had a hard time finding my signal. I have never played through a sansamp anything.

I love my BDI21 Great pedal all the different tones. Combined with my active 5 string bass I get great tone shaping. I have even put it after other effects pedals which gives a different tone or boost to them too. Even the ADI21 Acoustic Preamp DI for acoustic guitar and other acoustic instruments, (copy of the Sansamp Para Di), is a great tool foe bass that gives nice tone shaping. The preset in the manual for bass give a thick bass tone that sounds nice for electric bass too.

I pretty much steer clear of Behringer bass gear anyway, I've had a couple of their bass devices and they've sounded great but just didn't last very long due to build quality. Now when it come to analog synths they rock! I have the Neutron semi-modular synth and it is very well built and sounds freaking amazing! I have been using it on live gigs as a bass synth for over a year now with no issues. Can't say that for the Behringer bass devices I've owned.

@@boxnbanjo8757 Τech 21 offers a parallel output, which basically sends the input unprocessed signal of your bass wherever you want, for instance in your combo (which you can then mic, in a live situation). The output of the pedal, or the xlr output, is your processed signal which includes a cab simulation (if the blend is at 100%) . This goes directly into the console. So you can basically have two signals going to the mixing console. One from the mic of the amplifier and one from the xlr output of the pedal. I don't use any kind of amps in a live situation to be honest. I simply send the xlr output to the mixing engineer. Unless there's any kind of good quality tube amp on stage and I want to experiment a little bit.

The sound is not quite the same but for live its good enough. As for the build quality, i play in a punk band and the bdi21 has been jumped on by my singer with his size 12s repeatedly and been chucked in gig bags surviving for several years with only a few surface scratches to show for it. The thing i like about the behringer pedal is if it does break or get stolen i really don't care as its incredibly cheap to replace. Oh and for any guitarists the behringer to800, its almost identical to a tube screamer.

I'm i guitar player since early 90's and started playing bass recently. Being new to bass world I was looking for a cheap pre amp pedal to plug my bass direct to mixer in studio (we have 1800w rms on the mixer using 7 different speakers from active to passive, from 10 inch to 2x15 inch and from usa Makie to old school passive Community usa speakers). Also, for a live setup, I'm planning on using two 15 inch big cab monitors with a P.A. Amp and a 2x15 band EQ! That being said, this video really help me decide to really go for this pedal. As from it's durability because of the plastic Housing and switch, it's actually not a real problem for me because i I'll always leave it on all the time. It's basically my main pre amp and I've done my sound on it and that's it! The only thing i will actually change is hat i have my gain set to minimum to play in rock cover band, and I set it to 9 o'clock to play in a metal band. Been using this pedal for the last 2 months and I'm very happy with it. It sounds great with my Frankenstein rig setup haha 😂 . I bought it used and i also bought a used Boss Bass Chorus and Sans Amp bass compressor for a good price. Most of my guy tar pedals work well on bass except for the wah obviously, and the Decimator that's not needed. Delay i don't need also but Volume Boost, Bad Monkey overdrive and Zack Wyld phaser work great with bass.

Does anyone have experience with the durability and longevity of cheap Behringer products? I'm not concerned with the plastic housing, plastic is everywhere nowadays and often more stable than we think. But what about pots, sockets, circuit boards and components (resistors, transistors etc.)? Does anyone have a 10-year-old Behringer DI and can report?

Injust bought this pedal a few days ago, although I haven't used the Sansamp, I do however have the MXR M80. Haven't compared the 2 yet, but I will. The Behringer does have a nice signal boost that equalizes pretty easily. I think it is well worth the $36.00 I paid for it.

@@_Majoras I use the MXR at the studio and live, I use the Behringer at home. But I will try it sometime.

I thought the distortion sounded cool. Im getting this, with my Wine Cellar (another sansamp clone) I find it's easy to get around the flutter/harshness by keeping the bass/treble at or below noon and having the presence and volume higher.

Patrick- May I suggest a review of a cheapish bass pedal? The Caline "Wine Cellar" Driver +DI for bass. IMO it is far superior to the BDi. I am using it for drive & a DI on all small gigs and also using it for my High Side when I bi-amp on larger gigs. Under 50$ USD! Thanks

Use it at my home studio. Not throwing my gear around - pedals, amps anyway. Great review az usual, thank you.

Great clip Patrick, what are your thoughts of this BDI21 vs the Joyo American. I am looking for a low mid - boost drive ( nothing too Fuzz Driven as I have a EQD CLoven Hoof for Fuzz ), be interested to hear your thoughts on these two, thx and Happy 4th !

Great vid, I'm a relative newbie thinking of buying this but I have a quick question if anyone could help please? If I plug my bass into this, what sort of lead do I need to use to plug this into my amp? (I'm using a peavey tnt115 bw amp if that affects anything) could I just use a spare amp lead I have or do I need something particular? Sorry for the really stupid question, I'm still learning the tech side of things. Thanks!
