I know so many authors who can talk with such feeling and clarity about other books, but when it comes to talking about their own stuff, it becomes impossible. One of my mortification memories is trying in 2011 to explain to a Very Famous Author at a cocktail party what the book I was working on was about. (The book was The Fault in Our Stars.) As I stumbled and bumbled, the Very Famous Author just kept looking on politely, occasionally glancing over my shoulder to see if anyone might rescue them. -John

Even though signing that many copies of a book seems vaguely masochistic, I just wanted to let you know that getting a signed book means so much. I buy most of my books used from smaller booksellers to save money/help support them and by happenstance was accidentally sent a signed copy of TFIOS. I must have grinned for two hours straight after that-I was 17 and that was the first signed book I had ever received. So, in short, your borderline tortuous signing sessions really do have a positive ripple effect :)

But something about the title "get the show on" and then the actual subject of the video has really helped me realize that it's ok that I'm not on the same level as my HS friends. Amelia Frandsen My sister, brother and I, and my three children, all took time off either before or during our college educations. From the long view of thirty five years, it is not the least bit important to start and finish things at the same time as your peers. What matters is you start and finish when it is right for you. From the short view of looking at How gap years or semesters affected my kids, I have only extremely positive things to say. Each one of them matured and grew in confidence while not being in school. I applaud you.

Hey John!! For the most part, I am not a fan of fiction, and this is because in sixth grade one year I overdosed on teen fiction and fiction in general, and basically became so sick of it I just dropped it altogether. This doesnt mean the occasional brilliant fiction book doesnt exist, most recently I loved Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, but I tend to read maybe three or four fiction books total a year. The majority of my books are non fiction, and as eventually I want to major in physics, a large portion of these are physics. However, recently I've discovered a wonderful subgenre of nonfiction which is like journalist/essay like books. Some that I have loved recently include the Psychopath Test by John Ronson, In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson, etc. I have been looking for more of this type of book, and when I heard you were releasing one, I got so excited. I never preorder books, but I want to read this book so damn much, I had to. It sounds so interesting just from the blurb and your description. Aaah! Im so excited!! Cheers.

If you were to retire from public life, take up the mantle of hermithood, and never publish another word, that which you’ve given the world will still endure. So take a timeout, you don’t need public approval or even an explanation. It’s your life, you’re entitled; Take as much time as you need, take more if you want. Find your privacy, and guard it zealously if it feels satisfying. All stars burn out eventually. Most only smolder to the end, lacking the fuel to reach potential. Some stars seem to keep their brilliance, but on closer inspection are often just many starts burning together, and sometimes it’s a big star using its influence to steal the mass-energy of other stars out of desperation. A few stars will burn with ferocious luminosity and then flash-out of existence way too soon. Though it seems to be the stars that twinkle that go on to glow the longest.

I know the current situation in the US is terrible for many reasons but I'm still jealous of people who live there cause they get to have a signed copy. As for Canada, it should be illegal for a place to be so wonderful and produce so much awesomeness like they do. ( except maybe Justin bieber.)

John, when i listened to the first few lines of the anthropocene reviewed last week, i actually started bawling. I cannot explain how much i used to look forward to the 4th thursday of every month, how much of my sanity depended on your calm voice and sage advice. My entire month was spent thinking about and trying to implement what you had said in the previous episode. Inspired by you i wrote my own episode on new year's eve, reviewing the year. I understand your reasoning, and fully support your decision, you do deserve a break! But i just wanted to write this to thank you for all the infinitely dense yet light emotional moments i had while listening to you over the past 3 years. Thank you for the infinity you gave all of us in these numbered days.

I give "The Anthropocene Reviewed" 5 stars! In a completely unrelated tangent, the Smash Mouth song "All Star" contains surprising nuance and depth while at times being mysterious and unsettling. Its myriad of uses, from the Shrek soundtrack to easy bar karaoke, make it a classic song for listeners of all ages and backgrounds. When I lie awake at night, pondering all the ways I have failed that day, the subtle lyrics whisper gently in my ears, "Get your game on. Go play." I give "All-Star" 3 and a half stars.

While I was sitting alone in a cave/rock outcropping, surrounded by bushman paintings, I listened to the Anthropocene reviewed episode about cave paintings, And I wept. I sat there for hours. sometimes in silence, sometimes listening to more podcasts. I then listened to the episode about sunsets while i watched the sun set, And I wept. I finally got up to go, Wishing i could light a fire and stay the night, like my long gone ancestors did. I could see where the rock was blackened by continuous heat over the years. As I walked home through a young pine forest, the rain began to pour. The cold mountain rain water was so fresh on my skin I could taste it. while I walked I listened to the episode on Sycamore trees, And i wept. This probably would've been a good day either way, but listening to the Anthropocene Reviewed profoundly shaped my experiences that day. Whether for better or for worse. I still fondly look back on that day as a 5 star day. thanks for helping shine a light on the beautiful things in this world. turns out even 1 star moments in history can make for a 5 star story

This shift in your upcoming book's genre fits with my own evolving interests. I'm not a teen anymore so while I still love all of your past books, they're not as relatable as they once were for me. But a book of life-affirming nonfiction essays? Hell yes, count me in. It's exactly what many of us need in these times.
